CHAPTER 4: The Shadows of the Boardroom

CHAPTER 4: The Shadows of the Boardroom
The news of Emily Ashford’s sudden partial recovery could not be kept secret within the walls of the mansion. By noon the next day, the financial markets reacted with violent volatility. The Ashford Global Consortium's primary rival, a predatory investment firm led by a ruthless billionaire named Alistair Sterling, had been actively shorting Ashford stock, betting on Victor’s eventual retirement due to his daughter’s illness.
Inside the high-rise executive boardroom downtown, Alistair Sterling watched the television screen as a reporter stood outside the Ashford estate.
"If the Ashford heiress is recovering," Sterling’s chief operating officer said nervously, "the proxy vote next month to remove Victor as chairman will fail. The board members are already sentimental about this 'miracle boy' story leaking to the press."

Sterling’s face turned into a dark, calculated scowl. He tapped his fingers against his gold pen. "Then we change the narrative. A homeless boy magically sneaks into the most secure mansion in the country and cures a paralyzed girl? It sounds like a staged publicity stunt to manipulate the stock price. Or worse... it sounds like industrial espionage. Find out who that boy is. I want his history, his family, every piece of filth you can dig up from the gutters. If there is no filth, create it."
Back at the mansion, Julian had not been thrown back onto the streets. At Emily’s desperate tearful insistence, Victor had allowed the boy to stay in the guest quarters under house arrest.
Emily sat in her specialized wheelchair in the sunroom, her silver crutches resting against the glass wall. For the past three hours, she had been doing something she hadn't done in two years: she was systematically moving her left foot back and forth, watching the muscles respond to her commands.
"You're doing it too fast," Julian’s voice broke her concentration. He was standing near the doorway, wearing clean clothes provided by the house staff, though he looked deeply uncomfortable in the expensive fabric.
"I want to stand up again, Julian," Emily said, her voice filled with a desperate, burning determination. "If I stop, what if the freeze comes back?"
"It won't come back if you don't let the cold inside," Julian said, walking over and sitting on the floor beside her footrest. "When my grandma was sick, she told me that the body listens to what the heart believes. You spent two years believing you were a problem for your dad to fix with his money. You have to start believing you're just Emily again."
Victor stood outside the sunroom door, watching through the privacy glass. He saw his daughter smile—a real, radiant smile that hadn't appeared since the car accident that took his wife's life. The cold, mechanical ruthlessness that had guided his business empire for decades suddenly felt completely empty. He realized that all his billions hadn't been able to buy the one thing this nameless boy had given his daughter for free: a reason to try.

The peace was shattered when his personal phone vibrated. It was his lead legal counsel.
"Victor, we have a massive problem," the attorney said, his voice laced with panic. "Alistair Sterling just filed an injunction with the Securities and Exchange Commission. He’s accusing you of market manipulation, claiming you hired a crisis actor—the boy—to fabricate a medical miracle to artificially inflate Ashford Consortium stock before the merger vote. They’ve issued a subpoena for the boy. If he doesn't have a verified legal identity, the state will place him in a federal holding facility by tonight."
