CHAPTER 4: The Ruined Celebration

CHAPTER 4: The Ruined Celebration

By 1:00 p.m., the suburban street outside my parents' house was a circus of media vans, police cruisers, and bewildered catering staff. The neighborhood children who had been invited to Emma’s "surprise birthday party" stood with their parents on the sidewalk, watching in absolute shock as forensic technicians in white jumpsuits marched across the pristine manicured lawn.

Inside the dining room, the pink balloons were still bobbing against the ceiling, but the festive atmosphere was entirely dead. My father was seated at the mahogany table, his head in his hands, while two police officers stood guard at the exit. My mother was hyperventilating on the silk sofa, a female officer holding a paper bag for her to breathe into.

Vanessa stood near the kitchen island, her face twisted into a mask of pure defiance as Detective Vance and a team of investigators entered the room.

"This is an illegal intrusion!" Vanessa screamed, her voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You have no right to disrupt my daughter’s party! My lawyers will have your badges by evening!"

"Vanessa Hawthorne," Detective Vance said, pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "You have the right to remain silent. You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, grand larceny, and corporate fraud."

"What?!" Vanessa gasped, backing away into the counter, nearly knocking over the giant tier-cake with Emma's name on it. "You have no proof! You can't prove anything!"

"We searched the garage trash receptacles outside the perimeter, Vanessa," Vance said calmly, stepping forward. "We found a discarded plastic syringe coated in dissolved alprazolam residue. Your fingerprints are all over the plunger. And we also recovered the neighbor's security footage from 3:14 a.m. It shows you, quite clearly, carrying a bundle wrapped in a purple blanket out to the commercial dumpster, fastening the carabiner clip, and walking back inside to finish decorating for your daughter's party."

My mother let out a loud, theatrical wail from the sofa, throwing herself backward. "I didn't know! I swear I didn't know! Charles told me it was just a small sedative to keep the child quiet so we could discuss the legal paperwork in the morning!"

My father snapped his head up, glare cutting through his own wife like a knife. "Shut up, Eleanor! Shut your mouth!"

"Oh, don't worry, Mrs. Hawthorne," Vance said, nodding to his officers. "You’re coming with us too. Accessory to attempted murder after the fact, and corporate conspiracy. Take them all out."

The officers moved forward with practiced efficiency. The sound of metal handcuffs clicking into place echoed through the beautiful, expensive house, a sound of absolute justice cutting through twenty years of family arrogance. As they were led out past the flashing cameras of the local news networks, Vanessa looked toward the doorway where Marcus and I were standing.

May you like

"You ruined this family, Maya!" Vanessa spat, her face ugly with rage as a guard pushed her toward a waiting police van. "You were always an embarrassment! That little brat didn't deserve Grandfather's money!"

Marcus stepped in front of her, his towering frame completely blocking her view of me. "She didn't just win the money, Vanessa," Marcus said, his voice steady and cold. "She won her life. And you just lost yours."
