Chapter 2: The Whispered Awakening and the Gathering Vultures

The corridor on the fourth floor of St. Catherine’s Medical Center was shrouded in a heavy, sepulchral silence by 2:15 a.m. Maureen sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose. "No, Sarah went down to the administrative wing to sign the initial release forms. She wanted to handle it herself. Didn't want the corporate lawyers touching her father's body until she had the paperwork in her own hands."

Ada nodded, a quiet ache in her chest for the fierce, lonely young woman who had just become an orphan. She gripped the handle of her cleaning cart, ready to finish her rounds in the south wing, when a tiny patter of bare feet echoed against the polished linoleum.

Ada froze.

Emerging from the shadow of the family lounge was Lily. Her curly dark hair was a wild halo from sleep, her right sock was missing, and her small fingers tightly gripped the worn ear of Captain Waffles. Her big, dark eyes were wide, blinking against the harsh fluorescent lights.

"Mommy," Lily whispered, her voice small but clear in the empty hallway. "The room got too loud. The machines are sad."

"Oh, sweetheart," Ada murmured, dropping her microfiber cloth and kneeling instantly to scoop her daughter into her arms. "You're supposed to be sleeping. What did I tell you about coming out of the room?"

"The tall man is cold," Lily murmured, pointing her small, chubby finger directly down the hall.

Ada’s heart skipped a beat. Lily wasn't pointing at the family room or the nurses' station. Her finger was aimed directly at the cracked door of Room 417.

"Lily, no, we can't go over there," Ada whispered urgently, her eyes darting toward Maureen, who had just stepped into the break room to pour a fresh cup of black coffee. "The man in that room is resting. He's... he's gone to sleep for a very long time."

But Lily, with the uncanny, stubborn focus that only a three-year-old could muster, wriggled out of her mother's grip before Ada could lock her arms. Before Ada could grab her, the little girl trotted forward, her bare feet making soft smack-smack sounds against the floor. She pushed open the heavy wooden door of Room 417 and slipped inside like a ghost.

"Lily!" Ada gasped in a terrified under-breath, lunging after her daughter.

Inside the darkened room, the contrast was terrifying. The great Roman Hale lay perfectly still beneath the sterile white sheet, the flatlined heart monitor reflecting a solid, unmoving green line across the glass screen. The room felt freezing, stripped of the warmth of life.

Lily didn't hesitate. She didn't know about billionaires, or boardrooms, or the terrifying weight of a dead man's empire. She only saw a grandpa who looked lonely.

Using the plastic stepping stool the nurses used to check the elevated IV lines, Lily climbed up with practiced, agile small-child movements. Before Ada could reach the edge of the bed, Lily had scrambled over the safety railing, her small knees kneeling on the stiff hospital mattress right beside Roman Hale’s frozen, silent torso.

"Lily, get down right now!" Ada’s voice was a panicked, trembling whisper as she reached out to grab her daughter’s waist. "If the supervisor sees us, I'll lose my job—"

Lily ignored her mother. She leaned over the formidable, stone-cold face of the billionaire. She pressed her warm, soft cheek against his cold, stubbled jawline, and she tucked Captain Waffles right under his unyielding arm.

Then, she bent close to his ear, her voice a soft, rhythmic lullaby.

"Wake up, mister," Lily whispered, her small hand patting his chest right over his silent heart. "The girl outside is crying. You forgot to say goodbye. Don't be scared of the dark. Wake up."

"Lily, please," Ada cried, her tears finally spilling over as she grabbed Lily’s shoulders to pull her away from the corpse.

Then, the universe broke its own rules.

A sound tore through the quiet room—a deep, violent, horrific gasp.

Roman Hale’s chest suddenly heaved upward with a terrifying force, arching off the mattress like he had been struck by lightning. His eyes snapped wide open, two piercing, icy-blue irises staring wildly at the ceiling as his lungs violently dragged in the sterile hospital air.

Beep.

Ada stumbled backward, losing her footing and crashing against the metal supply cart, sending a tray of sterile gauze flying across the floor.

Beep. Beep. Beep.

The heart monitor, which had been a flat, dead line for exactly forty-eight minutes, suddenly erupted into a frantic, chaotic, but undeniably rhythmic dance.

"Mommy!" Lily giggled, sitting back on her heels as the billionaire's massive hand blindly gripped the sheets, his fingers twitching as life surged back into his veins. "He woke up!"

The door burst open. Maureen stood there, her coffee mug shattering against the floor, her face completely white as she looked from the flashing monitor to the breathing man, and finally to the little girl sitting on the bed.

"Oh my God," Maureen screamed, lunging for the blue code button on the wall. "Code Blue! Room 417! He's got a pulse! He's got a pulse!"
