Chapter 2: The Designer's Ledger

The air in the flagship showroom of Maison Valentino Milano evaporated the instant the man in the charcoal suit dropped to his knee on the cold marble floor.

Julian Vance was not merely a name on the glass storefront of the most prestigious bridal house in North America; he was an institution. Known across the globe for his volatile genius and his unyielding, almost religious devotion to the sanctity of haute couture, his sudden presence was like oxygen catching fire.

He didn't look up at Chloe. He didn't look at the crowd of wealthy socialites clutching their champagne flutes in stunned silence. His long, elegant fingers—fingers that had sketched gowns for royal weddings and international galas—wrapped gently around Maya’s trembling, calloused hands.

"Who did this to you?" Julian repeated. His voice was dangerously soft, a low baritone that vibrated with an underlying fury so potent it caused the security guard by the wall to instantly drop his hand from his radio.

Maya swallowed hard, her hand instinctively pressing against the lower curve of her seven-month belly. The baby kicked violently against her palm, a frantic rhythm that matched her own racing pulse. "She... she told me I didn't belong here," Maya whispered, her voice cracking as she indicated Chloe with a subtle shift of her chin. "She tore the lace, Julian. I told her I had an appointment, but she thought I was trying to steal it."

Slowly, deliberately, Julian stood up. He adjusted the cuffs of his charcoal suit jacket, his icy gray eyes lifting to lock onto Chloe’s face.

Chloe had turned a ghostly shade of gray beneath her heavy layer of Chanel foundation. Her fingers twitched against the delicate silk veil she had just brutally snatched from Maya’s head. "Mr. Vance," she stammered, her voice rising an octave into a panicked, defensive whine. "You—you don't understand. This woman walked in off the street without an elite referral. She's wearing counterfeit shoes, sir. And she's wearing the Milano Exclusive—the $40,000 limited-edition piece reserved for the senator's daughter's fitting this afternoon! She was stretching the silk panels, and I was simply protecting the inventory from being ruined by—"

"Silence," Julian said.

The word wasn't shouted, but it struck the room with the force of an iron gavel. Chloe’s mouth snapped shut so fast her teeth clicked.

"You speak of inventory," Julian said, stepping forward until he was standing a mere inch from Chloe’s gold nametag. "You speak of fabric and silk panels as if you understand the soul of this house. Let me educate you on what you are looking at, Chloe."

He reached out and snatched the stolen veil from her hand with a swift, predatory jerk.

"The woman you just assaulted, the woman you just shoved onto a sofa while she carries a child, is not a shoplifter. She is Maya Lin. She spent five years as the head textile conservator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The very lace on this Milano Exclusive gown was woven using a historical restoration technique that she taught my atelier in Paris three years ago."

A collective, audible gasp rippled through the gathered brides in the fitting room. The woman who had been recording on her Prada phone zoomed in closer, her jaw dropping.

Chloe’s eyes went wide, her knees visibly trembling beneath her tailored black pencil skirt. "She's... she's a consultant?"

"She is my guest of honor," Julian hissed, his eyes narrowing into slits of pure ice. "And she is the bride for whom I personally designed this entire collection. Every thread of this lace was created to celebrate her. And you just tore it off her shoulder like an animal."

Julian turned his head slightly toward the security guard. "Michael."

"Yes, Mr. Vance?" the guard answered, stepping forward instantly.

"Escort this woman off my property," Julian ordered, pointing a finger at Chloe. "She is stripped of her position, her commissions, and her credentials within the fashion industry effective immediately. If she takes so much as a personal notebook from that desk, have her arrested for corporate theft. And call the legal department. I want a civil suit filed against her for assault and destruction of proprietary design property before the stock market closes today."

"Mr. Vance, please!" Chloe shrieked as the security guard firmly gripped her upper arm, pulling her away from the velvet lounge. "It was an honest mistake! She didn't look like a Vance bride! I was only protecting the brand!"

"You are the stain on the brand," Julian said coldly, turning his back on her as she was dragged crying out through the heavy glass doors into the bustling New York street.

Julian knelt back down in front of Maya, his expression instantly shifting from a ruthless tyrant to a deeply protective friend. He took a silk handkerchief from his breast pocket and gently wiped a stray tear from her cheek. "I am so sorry, Maya. I should have been here to greet you at the door. Let's get you out of this torn piece and into the private suite upstairs. We have a empire to run, and a wedding to plan."
