Chapter 2: The Aftermath of the Masterpiece

Chapter 2: The Aftermath of the Masterpiece
The flashing of three hundred high-intensity camera lenses created a blinding, strobe-like canopy over the red carpet tent. The frantic, metallic clicking of shutter buttons sounded like a swarm of mechanical locusts devouring the remnants of Regina Vance’s carefully manufactured empire.

In the center of the marble runway stood Victoria Sterling, the undisputed crown jewel of international cinema and the guest of honor for the evening’s high-society gala. Just ninety seconds prior, Victoria had stepped out of her custom Rolls-Royce Phantom with the back of her three-million-dollar French lace gown completely shredded—the casualty of a catastrophic snag on a jagged metal latch inside the limousine door. The devastating tear had exposed the structural boning of the corset and threatened to reveal a highly private, specialized medical brace Victoria wore to manage a severe spinal injury—a reality her hyper-protective public relations team had spent a decade concealing from the ruthless global tabloids.
But the disaster had been intercepted.
Maya stood perfectly still, her thin fingers lightly dusting a stray speck of industrial lint off Victoria’s newly sculpted shoulder. Using nothing more than a heavy-duty pair of tailor’s shears, a box of industrial silver upholstery pins from her janitorial cart, and a roll of black structural reinforcement tape normally used to bind heavy-duty vacuum hoses, Maya had re-engineered the ruined couture. She had aggressively sliced away the mangled lace, using the remaining fabric to create an asymmetrical, architectural drape that pleated across Victoria’s torso like a futuristic suit of armor. The black tape had been transformed into a sleek, avant-garde geometric pattern that perfectly masked the medical brace, making it look like a deliberate, high-fashion statement on the intersection of technology and art.
Victoria turned slowly in front of the media wall, her eyes shining with a mixture of intense relief and artistic awe. She caught her reflection in the polished glass of a display case and let out a soft, breathless laugh.
"It’s not just a fix," Victoria whispered, her voice carrying across the hushed, stunned crowd of elite guests who were still clutching their crystal champagne flutes in collective shock. "It’s better than the original design. It’s brilliant."
The press corps erupted.
"Who designed the modification, Victoria?"
"Is this an unreleased collaboration?"
"Who is the girl in the gray uniform?"
Regina stood five feet away, her expensive white designer suit looking suddenly rigid, like a plaster cast hiding a hollow frame. The pieces of the young worker's sketchbook she had ripped apart just minutes ago were still scattered around her designer heels like confetti at a funeral. Her face had turned an ugly, blotchy shade of crimson, her perfectly lined lips twitching as she tried to force her toxic arrogance back into a presentable public narrative.
"It was... it was an authorized emergency protocol!" Regina suddenly shrieked, stepping forward and attempting to shove Maya out of the camera's frame with a passive-aggressive elbow. She forced a wide, synthetic smile toward the media wall, her hands shaking so violently she nearly dropped her diamond-encrusted clipboard. "As executive director of Vance Luxury Events, I maintain a highly specialized, unorthodox crisis-response team on the floor at all times! This girl was simply executing my direct, verbal instructions!"
Victoria Sterling didn't move her body, but her gaze shifted toward Regina with the freezing, aristocratic weight of a woman who had broken studio heads and billionaires.
"Your instructions, Regina?" Victoria asked, her voice dripping with a calm, dangerous skepticism. "I distinctly heard you screaming at the top of your lungs that this young woman was fired for standing in your walkway. I watched you tear up her sketches. You didn't give instructions. You gave a public exhibition of pure, unadulterated malice."
A collective gasp rippled through the black-tie crowd. Prominent local business developers, corporate attorneys, and wealthy international relatives lowered their smartphones, their expressions shifting from shallow amusement into a deep, shared disgust directed entirely at Regina.
"Victoria, please, there's been a massive misunderstanding," Regina stammered, her untouchable facade beginning to splinter down the center. "The girl is an undocumented janitor, she’s a security risk—"
"The girl," Victoria cut her off, stepping entirely out of Regina’s reach and extending her gloved hand toward Maya, "is a visionary. And as of this moment, Regina, your contract to manage the global press tour for my upcoming film franchise is permanently terminated. My legal team will contact your board of directors before sunrise."
Victoria turned her back on the executive, leaning down slightly to look into Maya’s quiet, unbothered gray eyes. "What is your name, sweetheart?"
May you like
"Maya," she replied simply, her voice steady and grounded, unaffected by the multi-million-dollar drama swirling around her. "Maya Lin."
"Well, Maya Lin," Victoria said, a genuine, beautiful smile breaking through her celebrity mask, "I suggest you throw that mop in the trash. Because you are coming inside with me as my personal guest of honor."
