Four days had passed since the miracle at St. Mercy Medical Center.

Noah had been moved to the pediatric VIP pavilion, a secure, penthouse-level suite where the air was filtered and the security was absolute. He was thriving, sitting up in his crib and laughing as he reached for a plush silver bear, completely unaware of how close he had come to the edge of the void.

Garrison sat in a leather armchair beside the crib, a sleek tablet resting on his lap. He hadn't been to his corporate office in ninety-six hours. The global board of directors was frantic, text messages from international markets were piling up, but Garrison didn't give them a single glance. His entire focus was divided between his breathing son and the daily reports from his security chief, Marcus Vance.

The door to the suite opened quietly, and Vance walked in. Vance was a retired federal marshal—a large, severe man who had tracked fugitives across three continents. Yet, looking at the tablet in his hand, he looked uncharacteristically frustrated.

"Tell me you have something, Marcus," Garrison said, his voice low so as not to startle Noah.

"We’ve combed every square inch of downtown, Mr. Bell," Vance said, sighs softly as he handed over a paper file. "We checked the Wheeler Mission, the Horizon House, and every soup kitchen within a five-mile radius of Lucas Park. Nobody knows a kid matching that description who stays permanently. The street kids call him 'The Ghost'."

"A ghost doesn't leave a library book behind," Garrison snapped, tapping his fingers against the tattered pages of the medical guide resting on the table. "What about the book itself?"

"The library records are ancient," Vance explained. "That specific copy was reported lost in 2018 by a family that went bankrupt and vanished into the system. But we did get a lead from a street chaplain near the transit center. He recognizes the description. The kid’s name is Leo. He’s eleven. And he’s not just homeless, Mr. Bell. He’s hiding."

Garrison’s eyes narrowed. "Hiding from what?"

"Two years ago, his mother died in an industrial accident at a textile warehouse on the south side," Vance said, pulling up a document on his phone. "The company was a shell operation owned by a predatory conglomerate called Vanguard Holdings. They falsified the safety records to avoid a payout and used corrupt local officials to bury the investigation. Leo was the only witness. He has a notebook his mother kept, detailing the code violations. Ever since then, Vanguard’s private fixers have been looking for him to destroy the evidence. If he goes into the foster care system, his name triggers an alert, and they find him. That’s why he stays invisible."

A cold, lethal fury settled into Garrison’s chest. He knew Vanguard Holdings. They were a ruthless, cutthroat operation run by a billionaire named Richard Sterling—a man Garrison had beaten in several real estate wars, a man who viewed people as grease for the wheels of his machinery.

"So a trillion-dollar corporate predator is hunting an eleven-year-old boy who just saved my son," Garrison said, his voice dropping into a dangerous, level tone.

"It looks that way, sir. And it gets worse," Vance added, his expression darkening. "Vanguard’s security team intercepted our street contacts this morning. They know we're looking for Leo. If they realize why a man of your stature is interested in him, they’re going to accelerate their search. They'll want to eliminate him before we can get him under our protection."

Garrison stood up, walking over to the window. Below, the city of Indianapolis was sprawling, a grid of concrete and iron that could easily swallow a child whole. He looked back at Noah, who was now sleeping peacefully, his small fist tucked securely against his cheek.

"Marcus," Garrison said, turning around with a look of absolute authority. "Pull every resource from our European and Asian divisions. I want a private perimeter established around Lucas Park and the surrounding alleys. We don't just find Leo to thank him anymore. We find him because he is under the protection of the Bell empire. If a single hand from Vanguard touches that boy, I will dismantle their entire corporate structure brick by bloody brick."
