Chapter 5 - The North Shore Injunction

The town of Iron Harbor sat on the very edge of the state line, a jagged cluster of gray stone buildings and corrugated steel sheds perched above the black, churning waters of Lake Superior. The air here didn't just smell of rain; it smelled of iron ore, diesel smoke, and the deep, permanent cold of the northern wilderness.

It had taken three days for Robert to secure the temporary leave from the hospital board, and three days for Marcus—the private investigator who had spent five years on the Wright family payroll—to locate the social security number Logan had used to clear the safety gates at Mine No. 4.

The office of the superintendent of Iron Harbor Taconite was a small, temporary trailer that vibrated every time the heavy ore trains moved through the lower yard.

Superintendent Carl Vance—a cousin of Joanna’s father who had left the valley twenty years ago—looked from the hospital identification card Robert had placed on his desk to the young woman holding the sleeping infant by the stove.

"He’s on the third level, Robert," Carl said, blowing steam from his coffee mug. "We call him Logan Miller up here. He didn't use the Wright name on the insurance forms. He’s been working the high-line cables since November. Twelve hours on, twelve hours off. He doesn't talk to anyone. He sleeps in the bunkhouse by the shunting yard."

"Can you bring him up, Carl?" Robert asked, his voice cracking with a tension that had been building through five hundred miles of winter highway. "Please. Just for ten minutes."

Carl looked out the window at the massive steel headframe of the mine shaft, which was currently lowering a cage of sixty men into the dark earth. "The shift doesn't clear until four, Doctor. And if I pull a high-line man off the cables without an emergency order, the union rep will have my head on a pole by five."

"This is an emergency order, Carl," Joanna said, stepping forward from the stove, her face pale but her eyes filled with a fierce, absolute determination that made both men look at her. She pulled the edge of the blanket back, revealing Lucas’s small, sleeping face. "This boy is three weeks old. He’s named after his grandfather, and he’s spent his whole life without a father because of a lie that was told twenty years ago in a lawyer's office. You pull him up now, or I’m walking down into that shaft myself."

Carl stared at his young cousin for five long seconds before he let out a short, respectful whistle. He reached for the heavy plastic microphone of the yard intercom.

"Cage operator," Carl barked into the receiver. "Bring up Miller from Level Three. Tell him there’s a compliance team from the state insurance board in the main office. And tell him to leave his gear in the locker—he won't be going back down tonight."
