Chapter 3 The Nurse Who Refused to Stay Silent

The front doors of Blackwood Manor opened before anyone gave the order.

A blast of icy autumn air swept through the marble foyer as an elderly woman stepped inside, leaning heavily on a polished wooden cane.

She looked to be nearly seventy.

Her silver hair was tucked neatly beneath a wool hat, and a faded navy coat hung loosely from her frail shoulders. Time had bent her back, but it had not dimmed the sharpness in her gray eyes.

Those eyes searched the room.

They stopped on Emily.

For several long seconds, neither woman spoke.

Then the old nurse whispered one trembling sentence.

"...You survived."

Emily's knees nearly gave way.

"Nurse... Margaret?"

Margaret Donnelly nodded, tears already filling her eyes.

"Oh, my dear girl."

She crossed the foyer as quickly as her aging legs allowed.

Before Emily could move, Margaret wrapped both arms around her.

"I thought they killed you."

Silence swallowed the mansion.

Ethan Blackwood watched the reunion with growing disbelief.

Victoria's face had become completely expressionless.

Only her trembling fingers betrayed the panic racing beneath her carefully maintained composure.

Emily could barely breathe.

"I looked for you."

Margaret gently touched Emily's cheek.

"I know."

"I searched every hospital."

"I know."

"They told me you disappeared."

Margaret lowered her eyes.

"They wanted everyone to believe that."

Ethan stepped forward.

"Mrs. Donnelly..."

The elderly nurse looked toward him.

"You know who I am?"

She nodded.

"Ethan Blackwood."

"You were holding your newborn son the morning everything happened."

His heart skipped.

"And you know Emily?"

Margaret looked back at Emily with heartbreaking tenderness.

"I delivered her baby."

The room froze.

Victoria spoke first.

"This is absurd."

Her smile returned, but it looked forced.

"She's an old woman remembering things incorrectly."

Margaret slowly turned toward her.

"I remember perfectly."

"You were there."

Victoria stiffened.

"I don't believe we've met."

"You signed the visitor register."

Margaret answered calmly.

"You visited the maternity ward twice that morning."

Victoria laughed.

"I gave birth there."

"You visited another room."

The smile vanished.

Ethan's attorney quietly took out his phone.

He was already recording.

So was Dr. Simmons.

Neither hid it.

Margaret looked at Ethan.

"Mr. Blackwood..."

"What I'm about to tell you destroyed my career."

She took a deep breath.

"And it nearly cost me my life."

Six Years Earlier

Saint Gabriel Medical Center

6:18 A.M.

Emily Carter had been twenty-two.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

Completely alone.

The father of her baby had died in a construction accident months before the birth.

She had no family left.

Only hope.

Margaret remembered placing the newborn boy into Emily's arms.

"He has your eyes."

Emily had smiled despite the pain.

"I'll call him Oliver."

She kissed the baby's forehead.

"I'll never let anything happen to you."

Margaret smiled.

"You're already a wonderful mother."

Emily cried.

Not because she was afraid.

Because for the first time in her life...

Someone believed in her.

Across the hall...

Victoria Blackwood occupied one of the hospital's luxury maternity suites.

She had delivered a baby only hours earlier.

A little boy.

Margaret remembered him well.

Healthy.

Strong.

Perfect.

But there had been complications after the birth.

Victoria insisted on privacy.

No visitors.

No photographs.

Only one physician was allowed inside.

Dr. Alan Rhodes.

At the time...

Margaret hadn't questioned it.

Around eight that morning...

The fire alarms sounded.

Smoke poured through the east wing.

Doctors rushed patients toward emergency exits.

Nurses grabbed infants from the nursery.

Everything became chaos.

Margaret remembered clutching Emily's baby against her chest while another nurse pushed Emily's wheelchair toward the evacuation stairwell.

Then...

Someone screamed.

"Fire in the neonatal unit!"

People ran in every direction.

Visibility disappeared beneath thick black smoke.

Margaret lost sight of Emily.

She lost sight of everyone.

"When the firefighters reached us..."

Margaret whispered...

"...the babies were gone."

The mansion fell silent.

Ethan frowned.

"Gone?"

"There had been twelve infants."

"Only eleven were accounted for."

Emily covered her mouth.

Margaret nodded.

"Your son disappeared."

Victoria suddenly interrupted.

"Enough."

Her voice cracked for the first time.

"This has gone far enough."

Margaret ignored her.

"The hospital blamed the confusion on the fire."

"No one wanted a scandal."

"So they rewrote reports."

Ethan stared.

"They changed official records?"

Margaret slowly nodded.

"They changed everything."

Emily whispered,

"I woke up two days later."

"My baby was gone."

"They told me he died."

Margaret shook her head.

"No."

"They told you there wasn't enough left to identify."

Emily burst into tears.

"I begged to see him."

"They wouldn't let me."

Ethan felt physically sick.

He looked toward Victoria.

She refused to meet his eyes.

"No."

Victoria said quietly.

"No."

Margaret turned toward her.

"I remember your husband."

Ethan blinked.

"My father?"

"No."

"Your first husband."

The room went completely still.

Victoria's breathing stopped.

Ethan frowned.

"My first..."

Then realization struck.

He had never asked many questions about Victoria's life before they met.

She had once mentioned a brief marriage years earlier.

Nothing more.

Margaret continued.

"He came to the hospital after the fire."

"He argued with Dr. Rhodes."

"I heard them."

"What did they say?"

Margaret closed her eyes.

"He kept repeating..."

"'If anyone finds out...we lose everything.'"

Victoria shouted.

"She's lying!"

No one reacted.

Not even Ethan.

Emily slowly stepped toward Margaret.

"Why didn't you come forward?"

The old nurse looked ashamed.

"I tried."

"What happened?"

"They fired me."

"For misconduct."

"I appealed."

"They denied it."

"I contacted the police."

"No investigation."

"I contacted newspapers."

"No one printed the story."

"Then..."

She looked directly at Victoria.

"...someone burned my house down."

The room became deathly quiet.

Ethan's security chief suddenly approached.

"Sir."

"What?"

"We've checked her identification."

"And?"

"She's exactly who she claims to be."

Margaret reached into her handbag.

"I kept something."

"What?"

"A copy."

She removed a worn manila envelope.

Its edges had yellowed with age.

"I stole it before they destroyed the originals."

She handed it to Ethan.

Inside...

Lay a delivery-room photograph.

Two newborn boys.

Side by side.

Each wearing hospital wristbands.

One labeled:

BABY CARTER

The other:

BABY BLACKWOOD

Ethan stared.

"They were together."

Margaret nodded.

"For twenty-three minutes."

Emily looked confused.

"What happened after?"

Margaret swallowed.

"I don't know."

"When I came back..."

"...only one baby remained."

Victoria suddenly lunged.

She tried grabbing the photograph.

Ethan caught her wrist.

Hard.

"What are you doing?"

"It proves nothing!"

She struggled.

"It proves someone had access."

"It proves records existed."

"It proves you're trying to destroy evidence."

For the first time in their marriage...

Ethan looked at Victoria with suspicion instead of love.

"I want the truth."

"You already have it."

"No."

His voice hardened.

"I've only just begun hearing it."

The mansion's front doors opened again.

Another member of security hurried inside.

"Mr. Blackwood..."

"What now?"

The guard looked pale.

"The archives division called."

"What about?"

"The hospital."

"They found something in an off-site storage warehouse."

Everyone waited.

The guard swallowed.

"A security tape."

Emily stopped breathing.

"A tape?"

"Yes."

"It was mislabeled."

"Dated..."

He looked at the file.

"...the morning of the fire."

Margaret closed her eyes.

"Oh, dear God."

Ethan's pulse thundered.

"If that tape survived..."

He looked toward Victoria.

"...then someone recorded exactly what happened."

Victoria took one slow step backward.

Then another.

For the first time since the birthday party began...

She looked genuinely afraid.

Because memories could fade.

Witnesses could be silenced.

Documents could disappear.

May you like

But cameras...

Cameras never forgot.
