Chapter 3: The Diagnosis of Wealth

The transition from a chaotic public emergency room to an isolated, ultra-luxury private suite on the top floor of the hospital happened so fast it gave Lauren whiplash. Within an hour of Giovanni’s arrival, Luca had been moved. The walls here were covered in soft wood paneling; there were leather sofas, a private kitchen, and a dedicated nursing station outside the door that answered only to Dr. Aris.

Luca lay in a high-tech crib, an intravenous line running into his tiny arm, but he was no longer whimpering. Dr. Aris had managed to lower his fever to 100.5 using a specialized intravenous cooling protocol, avoiding the traumatic spinal tap altogether after a rapid molecular blood assay ruled out bacterial meningitis.

"It is a severe case of human herpesvirus 6—commonly known as Roseola," Dr. Aris explained, stepping into the suite’s private sitting room where Lauren and Giovanni were waiting. "It presents with an alarmingly high, sudden fever that can cause febrile seizures if left unmanaged, which explains his lethargy. But it is viral, not bacterial. We have started him on targeted antivirals and hydration. He will sleep for the next twelve hours, and by tomorrow evening, a rash will appear, the fever will break, and he will be completely out of danger."

Lauren let out a breath she felt like she had been holding for fifteen months. She sank into one of the plush leather chairs, burying her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent, relieved sobs.

"Thank you, Doctor," Giovanni said, his voice calm but authoritative. "Ensure your team stays on this floor until he is discharged. I don't want a single person near my son who hasn't been vetted by Marco."

"Of course, Mr. Moretti," Dr. Aris bowed his head slightly and stepped out, closing the heavy soundproof door behind him.

The silence in the room became absolute. Lauren kept her face in her hands, acutely aware that she was now alone in a room with the most dangerous man in New York, the man whose ring she had left on a marble nightstand before vanishing into the night.

She heard the soft click of his lighter. The faint, sweet smell of a specialized clove cigarette drifted through the room—a habit Giovanni only indulged in when he was calculating his next major move.

"Look at me, Lauren," he commanded.

She slowly dropped her hands, lifting her chin to face him. He was standing by the window, looking out over the rain-slicked skyline of Boston. He had taken off his suit jacket, his white silk shirt stretched tight across his broad shoulders, his dark tie slightly loosened.

"Why did you leave?" he asked. His tone wasn't furious; it was analytical, which made it far more terrifying. "I gave you everything. A penthouse in Manhattan, a house in the Hamptons, a life where you never had to worry about a single financial burden. Yet you fled like a thief in the night, changed your name back to your maiden title, and hid my child from me."

"I left because I didn't want my children raised in a fortress where the windows are bulletproof and the guards know more about my schedule than my husband does!" Lauren snapped, her old defensive fire flaring up despite her exhaustion. "I left because every time you walked out the front door, I didn't know if you were going to a corporate board meeting or a sit-down where someone was going to end up in a concrete foundation! I didn't want that life for myself, Giovanni, and I certainly didn't want it for Luca!"

Giovanni walked slowly toward her, stopping right in front of her chair. He leaned down, placing his hands on the armrests, effectively trapping her within his space.

"You thought you were saving him from my world," Giovanni whispered, his breath warm against her cheek. "But look at what your choice did. Tonight, you were sitting in a public waiting room, begging a third-year resident not to drive a needle into our son's spine because you didn't have the resources to demand better. You were worried about insurance forms while my boy was burning up."

A tear slipped down Lauren’s cheek. He was right, and it cut through her pride like a razor. "I was doing my best, Giovanni. I have a job. I have a life here."

"Your 'best' nearly cost me my son," he said, his eyes darkening. He stood up straight, his expression settling into an unyielding finality. "The independence experiment is over, Lauren. Tomorrow, as soon as Aris clears Luca for travel, you are coming back to New York with me."

"I am not moving back into your penthouse, Giovanni!" she refused, standing up to face him, though she had to look up to meet his gaze. "We are divorced. The papers were signed. You cannot force me back into a marriage that died the moment I realized who you really were."

Giovanni reached into his vest pocket, pulling out a slim silver fountain pen and a legal document that Marco had prepared during the flight. He tossed it onto the dark wooden coffee table between them.

"I am not asking you to be my wife again, Lauren," Giovanni said, a cruel, mocking smile touching his lips. "I am a practical man. You want your freedom? You can keep it. But my son stays with me. This is a joint custody agreement. It states that you and Luca will reside in a townhouse I have purchased in Gramercy Park. It has twenty-four hour security, a private medical staff, and a dedicated driver. You can keep your little law job in Boston if you can do it remotely, or I will buy you a partnership in a firm in Manhattan. But you will live where I can see my son every single day. If you don't sign it... I will file for sole custody in a federal court, and you know exactly how many judges in New York carry a Moretti ledger."

Lauren looked at the document, then through the glass doors at Luca, who was sleeping peacefully under the watchful eye of a private nurse. Giovanni wasn't trying to recapture her; he was reclaiming his blood. And he had just given her an ultimatum she had no power to refuse.
