CHAPTER 6: THE ACQUISITION OF HAPPINESS

CHAPTER 6: THE ACQUISITION OF HAPPINESS
One Year Later
The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was a sea of glittering diamonds, white silk, and the absolute elite of Chicago society. The annual Moretti Foundation Charity Gala was the most prestigious event of the year, a night where billionaires, politicians, and artists gathered to donate millions toward cultural preservation and youth art programs.

The room was beautiful, but my focus was entirely on the man standing beside me.
Dominic Moretti looked devastatingly handsome in a perfectly tailored black tuxedo, his dark hair brushed back, his eyes sparkling with gold flecks as he watched the crowd. His arm was wrapped securely around my waist, his long fingers resting against the silk of my emerald-green evening gown—a dress I didn't have to borrow, a dress that belonged to me, just like the man holding me.
Over the past year, the Moretti syndicate had undergone a massive transformation. Under Dominic’s brilliant leadership and my new role as the Chief Executive Director of operations, we had completely legitimized ninety percent of the business, shifting the focus entirely toward legal global art acquisitions and high-end estate management. The shadows of the past were gone, replaced by a powerful, clean empire that no one could touch.
"You look breathtaking, Mrs. Moretti," Dominic whispered into my ear, his warm breath sending a familiar, delicious shiver down my spine.
I smiled, looking down at the heavy, flawless diamond ring glittering on my left finger. We had been married three months ago in a private ceremony on the Amalfi Coast, surrounded only by a few trusted friends—including my cousin Caleb, who had spent the entire wedding bragging that his Instagram post was the best thing that ever happened to us.
"And you look very handsome yourself, Mr. Moretti," I replied, leaning up to press a soft kiss against his jaw. "Though I noticed you’ve been ignoring the Senator for the last twenty minutes."
"The Senator is a bore," Dominic said smoothly, pulling me even closer against his side. "And I have much more important things to focus on. Like my wife."
Suddenly, a familiar voice interrupted us. "Alright, alright, make way for the professional! I need to get a picture of the power couple before the auction starts!"
Caleb walked up to us, a high-end digital camera in his hands, his tuxedo jacket open, a massive grin on his face. He adjusted the lens, pointing it right at us. "Come on, Eva, give me that million-dollar smile. Dominic, try not to look like you’re planning a corporate murder. Just look at her like you love her."
"That part is easy," Dominic muttered softly.
He turned his head, looking down at me with an expression of such profound, unconditional devotion that it took my breath away. He didn't care about the cameras, the donors, or the security detail watching from the doors. In his eyes, the entire world began and ended with me.
I tilted my head toward him, my hand resting against his crisp white shirt, my smile radiant and completely genuine.
Click.
Caleb lowered the camera, looking at the digital screen with absolute satisfaction. "Perfect. This one is going right on my feed. The caption? The King and his Queen. Forever."
"Leave it up," Dominic said, a brilliant, knowing smile cutting across his face as he looked at Caleb, then back down at me. He leaned in, pressing his lips to mine in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed our victory over the past and our certainty of the future.
"This time," Dominic whispered against my lips, "everyone in the world can see it. Because you are mine, Eva. And you are the only thing that will ever matter."

The music swell in the background, the lights of the ballroom shone bright, and as we walked into the crowd hand-in-hand, I knew that the dark world we had fought through had finally brought us into the light of an unbreakable, everlasting love.
