Chapter 4: The Fall of the Sullivans

Chapter 4: The Fall of the Sullivans

The raid on the Sullivan warehouse was a bloodless execution of strategy. Deprived of their paid muscle, the Sullivan leadership was caught completely off guard. Franco and his inner circle breached the facility at midnight, rescuing his mother, Francesca Gardoni, without a single shot being fired from the enemy side.

But the war wasn't entirely over. Marcus, desperate and cornered, had fled the scene before Franco reached the inner office. He knew what happened to men who crossed the Gardoni family.

Two days later, we returned to Boston. The city felt different now; the tension in the air had cleared, replaced by a quiet realization that Franco’s grip on the underworld was absolute. Francesca Gardoni was recovering at a private estate, and her first act of freedom was to send me an antique gold bracelet with a note that read: To the woman who fights with a pen. Thank you for my life.

I was back in my twenty-fourth-floor office, finishing the compliance reports that would permanently dissolve the Sullivan shell companies, when the power suddenly cut out.

The bright morning sun streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows kept the room lit, but the sudden silence of the air conditioning was jarring. The electronic locks on my office door clicked open automatically as part of the building's emergency safety protocol.

I stood up, instinct screaming at me to run.

Before I could reach the door, it swung open. Marcus stood there.

He looked terrible. His clothes were filthy, his eyes bloodshot and manic, a cheap revolver trembling in his right hand. He had used the chaos of the past forty-eight hours to slip past the ground-floor security disguised as a courier.

“You ruined everything, Haley,” Marcus hissed, stepping into the room and slamming the door behind him. He pointed the gun straight at my chest. “I was going to be a captain. I was going to have millions. And you... you and your gangster boyfriend froze the accounts. You tracked the Canadian routes.”

“Marcus, put the gun down,” I said, keeping my voice steady, though my heart was hammering a frantic rhythm. “The building is surrounded by Franco’s men. If you pull that trigger, you won't make it to the elevator.”

“I don't care anymore!” he screamed, his face contorting with rage. “If I’m going down, I’m taking you with me. I should have broken you when we were together.”

He took a step forward, his finger tightening on the trigger.

The glass wall behind me didn't shatter; it exploded inward.

Franco didn't use the door. He had used the maintenance balcony on the exterior of the building, breaching the side window with a heavy tactical flashbang that blinded Marcus instantly. Before my ex could recover from the deafening pop, Franco was inside the room like a striking predator.

He didn't shoot Marcus. He didn't need to. Franco slammed him into the mahogany desk, disarming him with a brutal, swift twist of his wrist that echoed with a sickening crack. Marcus shrieked in pain, collapsing to the floor as Silas and Enzo rushed through the main door, pinning him down.

Franco didn't even look at the man he had just broken. He turned to me, his chest heaving, his suit jacket torn and dusted with glass fragments. He reached out, his hands trembling as he grabbed my face, checking me for injuries.

“Are you hurt? Did he touch you?” Franco’s voice was wild, stripped of all its usual mafia-boss composure.

“I’m fine, Franco. I’m okay,” I breathed, wrapping my arms around his neck, burying my face in his shoulder. The scent of him instantly calmed the storm inside me.

Franco held me so tightly I could barely breathe, his heart thudding violently against mine. He looked down at Marcus, who was being dragged out of the office in handcuffs.

“Take him to the harbor,” Franco told Silas, his voice dropping into a register that promised absolute ruin. “And make sure he understands that the next time he hears my name, it will be the last thing he ever hears.”
