Chapter 3: Shadows of the Dynasty
The hospital room was quiet, save for the steady hum of the heart monitor. Elena lay in the specialized maternity bed, an IV line feeding fluids and mild, baby-safe sedatives into her bloodstream. Dr. Aris, the city’s top OB-GYN, walked in with a relieved smile.
"You have a minor hairline fracture in your pelvic bone, Elena, which explains the severe pain," Dr. Aris explained, adjusting the monitor. "But miraculously, the amniotic sac did not rupture, and the placenta remains intact. The baby is stable, but you are on strict bed rest until delivery. No exceptions."
"Thank you, Doctor," Elena breathed, placing both hands over her belly.

The door opened softly, and Julian Vance stepped inside. Julian, the heir to the Vance empire and the father of Elena's child, looked pale, his suit jacket wrinkled as if he had flown across the country in a panic—which he had. He had been stranded in London on a forced business trip orchestrated by his own board of directors—a trip Elena now knew was a trap to leave her isolated.
Julian rushed to her side, falling to his knees and pressing his forehead against her hand. "Elena... God, I’m so sorry. I came as soon as Ruiz called me. If I had known what Clara was capable of, I would never have left."
Elena ran her fingers through his hair, her expression softening but remaining firm. "Julian, it wasn't just Clara. She didn't act alone. She couldn't have transferred millions from your family's trust fund without insider help on your board."
Julian looked up, his eyes bloodshot. "Ruiz told me about the financial logs you found before the incident. She was draining the offshore accounts. But why? She already had a massive settlement from our broken engagement."
"Because the settlement wasn't enough to cover her secret," Elena revealed, pulling a manila folder from the bedside drawer that Ruiz had delivered earlier. "Clara didn't just want your money, Julian. She was deep in debt to an international shell corporation run by a man named Victor Vance—your uncle."
Julian froze. "Uncle Victor? He’s been exiled in Switzerland for five years."

"He never left," Elena said, opening the folder to reveal photos of Clara meeting with a disguised man in a secluded warehouse district. "Victor used Clara to systematically bankrupt your father's estate from the inside. They knew that once our baby was born, a mandatory legal trust would lock down the remaining Vance assets for the next eighteen years, making it impossible for them to touch the money. Pushing me down the stairs wasn't just a fit of rage, Julian. It was their final, desperate attempt to stop the clock."
Julian stood up, a dangerous, cold aura settling over him. The gentle, aristocratic man was gone, replaced by a protector who had almost lost everything. "They wanted a war. They got one."
