Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Marcone

The battle for the bunker lasted less than seven minutes, but to Sophia, sitting beneath the steel desk with her hands over her ears, it felt like an eternity in the belly of a machine.
Lorenzo moved with a terrifying, rhythmic precision. He didn't waste a single round, his weapon barking in short, three-round bursts that cleared the doorway every time a tactical shield attempted to breach the threshold. The floor became littered with gold casing hulls, their metallic clinking providing a sharp counterpoint to the thunderous roar of the submachine gun.
At exactly 3:17 AM, a sudden, piercing chime echoed from the main terminal console.
The blue progress bar had turned a bright, solid green. A single sentence flashed across the screen in bold white letters: UPLOAD COMPLETE. TRANSCRIPT SECURED BY DOJ INTERPOL TASK FORCE.
At the same moment, the sound of heavy, rhythmic thumping shook the ceiling above—the distinctive, deep roar of federal blackhawk helicopters descending onto the Lake Forest lawn.
"Cease fire!" a voice shouted from the corridor outside the bunker. It wasn't Victor Hale’s grating rasp; it was the amplified megaphone of a federal tactical commander. "This is the FBI Hostage Rescue Team! Marcone forces, drop your weapons and face the wall! The building is entirely surrounded!"
The gunfire in the hallway died instantly, replaced by the chaotic sounds of shouting, plastic zip-ties snapping, and the heavy boots of federal agents securing the upper levels of the mansion.
Lorenzo slowly lowered his weapon, his chest heaving under his tactical vest, his face covered in a fine layer of gray cordite dust. He turned his head toward the steel desk, his gray eyes searching the shadows until he found her.
"It’s over, Sophia," he said, his voice dropping into a low, ragged whisper.
He reached down, his bandaged hand open and waiting as she crawled out from beneath the desk. Sophia stood up, her emerald green nightgown torn at the hem, her face pale but entirely whole. She didn't look at the smoke or the ruined doorway; she threw her arms around his neck, her face buried in the crook of his shoulder as the first team of federal agents burst into the room with their rifles raised.
"Federal agents! Don't move!" the lead operative shouted.

Lorenzo didn't raise his hands. He kept his arm wrapped securely around Sophia’s waist, his gray eyes locking onto the agent with an icy, unshakeable authority that made the man lower his barrel by a fraction of an inch.
"Assistant US Attorney Vance is expecting this terminal data," Lorenzo said calmly, pointing his taped finger toward the green screen on the monitor. "The Meredith Rowe ledgers are fully verified. Now, clear my room. My wife needs a coat."
