Chapter 4: The Court of Public Opinion

On Thursday afternoon, the county sheriff’s vehicles arrived at the lake house with their lights flashing, their tires crunching loudly on the gravel driveway.

The media had already gathered at the main gates, tipped off by a strategic leak from our public relations division. Flashbulbs exploded against the gray New Hampshire afternoon as Graham Whitaker was led out of the front entrance of the lake house in silver handcuffs, his head bowed, his expensive linen shirt wrinkled and stained with sweat.

Behind him walked Warren Whitaker, flanked by two federal marshals who were executing the corporate fraud and embezzlement warrants.

I stood on the second-floor balcony, watching the descent of the Whitaker dynasty with a calm, unshakeable peace. Beside me stood Maren, her tablet displaying the live news feeds from the Boston television networks.

Graham stopped just before the police cruiser, his eyes lifting to see me standing on the balcony. He shouted something—a desperate, garbled plea for forgiveness, his face distorted by a mixture of terror and regret—but his words were drowned out by the shouting of the reporters and the slam of the cruiser door.

Avery was escorted out next, not in handcuffs, but carrying a single plastic trash bag containing the few personal belongings our legal team had allowed her to keep from the estate. She was weeping openly, her face covered by her hands as the cameras captured her departure from the house she had claimed I had no right to stand in.

When the driveway was finally empty, the silence that returned to the lake house was beautiful. It was no longer the heavy, suffocating silence of a house built on fear and control; it was the clean, quiet expanse of a home that had been purged of its rot.

Maren turned to me, a stack of transfer documents in her hand. "The title for the lake house has been officially cleared, Claire. The Whitaker name has been removed from the registry. It is 100% your property now."

"Have the local staff been taken care of?" I asked, walking back into the master suite.

"Every maid, chef, and gardener has been transitioned to a direct contract with Ellery Meridian," Maren confirmed. "With a twenty percent raise across the board for their cooperation during the forensic audit. They’ve already provided thirty-two distinct statements regarding the family’s systemic abuse and financial misconduct over the last eighteen months."

"Good," I said, looking at the large, empty room where my wedding dress had hung just forty-eight hours ago. It was gone now, packed away into a storage box to be donated to a local women's shelter charity. "Let's prepare the final restructuring plans for the restaurant workers. I want the hospitality group rebranded under the Ellery name by Monday morning."
