CHAPTER 4 — THE MAN WHO KEPT HIS PROMISE

CHAPTER 4 — THE MAN WHO KEPT HIS PROMISE

The first gunshot never reached the crowd.

The suppressor swallowed the sound into a dull metallic cough.

Only Marcus heard it.

Years of surviving ambushes had trained him to recognize danger before most people realized it existed.

His head snapped toward the rooftop across the street.

A brief flash.

A scope.

A rifle.

"No!"

Marcus lunged forward with every ounce of strength he possessed.

The bullet shattered a streetlamp exactly where Ethan had been standing a heartbeat earlier.

Glass exploded across the sidewalk.

Children screamed.

Parents instinctively pulled their sons and daughters close.

Chaos erupted.

Evelyn spun around, confused.

"What—"

Before she could finish, Marcus crashed into Ethan and Lily, knocking all three of them behind a parked delivery truck.

A second bullet struck the truck's steel door with a deafening clang.

Evelyn froze.

She stared at the stranger shielding her children with his own body.

His broad shoulders.

Dark hair.

The familiar scent of sandalwood.

Then he looked at her.

Five years disappeared in a single heartbeat.

"Marcus..."

Her voice was barely a whisper.

His eyes never left the rooftops.

"Stay down!"

The command came automatically.

The same protective tone she had heard countless times before.

Only now...

It wasn't meant for an empire.

It was meant for their children.

The sniper adjusted his position.

"Damn."

He hadn't expected Marcus Vale to appear.

His earpiece crackled.

"Finish the job."

The sniper steadied his breathing.

He pulled the trigger again.

Marcus reacted instantly.

He wrapped one arm around Evelyn while shielding Ethan and Lily beneath him.

The bullet tore through his left shoulder.

The impact spun him sideways.

Blood stained his white shirt almost immediately.

"Marcus!"

Evelyn caught him before he hit the pavement.

For a moment she forgot everything.

The misunderstanding.

The betrayal.

The years apart.

All she saw was the man she had once loved bleeding in her arms.

Across the street, Vincent drew his weapon.

"There!"

Vale security operatives, hidden throughout the town after Marcus's earlier suspicions, moved with military precision.

The sniper abandoned his rifle and fled across the rooftops.

Two black SUVs carrying Moretti men accelerated toward the square.

Vincent barked orders into his radio.

"Protect the family!"

Within seconds, Black Harbor became a battlefield.

But unlike the violent wars Marcus had fought for years...

This one had only one objective.

Get Evelyn and the children out alive.

"Mom..."

Lily clung to Evelyn's arm, trembling.

"What's happening?"

Ethan looked at Marcus's bleeding shoulder.

"Mister..."

Marcus managed a weak smile despite the pain.

"It's okay."

"No, it isn't."

The little boy tore off his own jacket and pressed it against Marcus's wound exactly as his school first-aid teacher had once demonstrated.

Marcus stared at him.

"You remembered."

Ethan nodded seriously.

"They said pressure stops bleeding."

Marcus's chest tightened.

"My brave boy..."

The words escaped before he could stop them.

Ethan frowned.

"How do you know my name?"

Marcus looked toward Evelyn.

She already understood.

She had seen it from the very first moment.

The way he looked at the twins.

The way they looked back.

There was no hiding the truth anymore.

Another burst of gunfire echoed through the square.

Vincent reached them.

"We have to move!"

Marcus nodded.

"The bakery."

Martha had already opened the back entrance.

"Hurry!"

The family rushed inside while security officers blocked the alley.

The old bakery suddenly became a fortress.

Upstairs, Evelyn locked the apartment door.

The twins stood silently in the corner, frightened but trying to be brave.

Marcus sat heavily at the kitchen table while Martha brought towels.

"We need a doctor."

Marcus shook his head.

"No hospitals."

"They'll be watching."

Evelyn instinctively knelt beside him.

"Let me see."

Their eyes met.

Neither spoke.

Slowly, she cut away the torn fabric around the wound.

The bullet had passed cleanly through.

Lucky.

Very lucky.

"You could have died."

Marcus answered quietly.

"I wasn't going to let them hurt you."

"Or the children."

"They're my children too."

Silence filled the room.

Neither twin moved.

Lily looked from Marcus to Evelyn.

Then asked the question both children had unknowingly carried their entire lives.

"Are you..."

She swallowed.

"...our dad?"

Marcus looked at Evelyn.

He would not answer without her permission.

She closed her eyes for a long moment.

Finally...

She nodded.

"Yes."

The room fell completely still.

Ethan blinked several times.

"Really?"

Marcus's voice trembled.

"Yes."

The little boy studied him carefully.

"You came back?"

Marcus lowered his head.

"I never stopped looking for you."

No one spoke for several moments.

Then Ethan quietly walked across the room.

Marcus feared the boy might reject him.

Instead...

Ethan placed the bloodstained jacket back against Marcus's shoulder.

"So you don't bleed more."

Marcus laughed softly through tears.

"Thank you."

Lily approached next.

She looked remarkably composed for a six-year-old.

"Were you the man watching us outside school?"

Marcus nodded honestly.

"Yes."

"You scared Mom."

"I know."

"I'm sorry."

"Why didn't you just knock on the door?"

Marcus had asked himself that question countless times.

"Because I wasn't sure your mother wanted to see me."

Lily accepted the answer with surprising maturity.

"That makes sense."

Evelyn finished bandaging his shoulder.

Her hands remembered exactly how to care for him.

Marcus noticed.

"So do you."

She looked away.

"I remember many things."

Neither mentioned the night she left.

Not yet.

There were more urgent matters.

Vincent entered carrying a laptop.

"We have a problem."

Marcus looked up.

"The Morettis?"

"They've surrounded the town."

Images from security drones filled the screen.

Roadblocks.

Armed vehicles.

Lookouts.

Antonio Moretti had committed almost fifty men.

All for one family.

Evelyn stared at the map.

"Why?"

Marcus answered quietly.

"Because of me."

Vincent added,

"They've been searching for you for years."

Her face paled.

"I don't understand."

Marcus took a slow breath.

"The night you left..."

He looked directly into her eyes.

"I wasn't betraying you."

She stiffened.

Marcus continued.

"Chloe had discovered someone inside my organization was poisoning me."

Evelyn said nothing.

Vincent placed a small evidence bag onto the table.

Inside were faded capsules.

"The originals."

Marcus nodded.

"She grabbed me as I was taking them."

"We fell against the desk."

"You opened the door."

"And you left before either of us saw you."

The apartment became painfully quiet.

Evelyn stared at the evidence.

Then at Marcus.

Then back again.

For five years...

She had built her entire life upon one terrible certainty.

What if...

It had never been true?

Tears slowly filled her eyes.

"I never let you explain."

Marcus shook his head.

"You didn't owe me an explanation."

"I should have trusted you."

"I should have noticed you were pregnant."

They both carried guilt.

Different burdens.

The same pain.

A knock interrupted them.

Three quick taps.

Then two.

Vincent relaxed.

"Our medic."

Minutes later Marcus's wound was professionally cleaned.

The doctor smiled.

"You'll live."

Marcus answered without taking his eyes off Evelyn.

"I intend to."

Night settled over Black Harbor.

Outside, Moretti's men tightened their circle.

Inside the little apartment above the bakery, Ethan and Lily had finally fallen asleep together on the old sofa, exhausted by fear and excitement.

Marcus quietly covered them with a blanket.

His gaze lingered on their peaceful faces.

"I've imagined this moment for five years."

Evelyn stood beside him.

"So have I."

He looked at her.

"I'm not asking you to forgive me tonight."

"I know."

"I'm only asking you to let me protect our family."

Before Evelyn could answer, Vincent's phone rang.

He listened for only a few seconds before his face turned grim.

"Boss."

Marcus turned.

"What now?"

Vincent slowly lowered the phone.

"We intercepted Moretti's final transmission."

Marcus's expression hardened.

"What did he say?"

Vincent answered quietly.

"He'll attack at sunrise."

"And this time..."

"...he's coming himself."

Outside, somewhere beyond the sleeping town, dozens of headlights appeared along the coastal highway.

Antonio Moretti had arrived.

The war Marcus had spent years keeping away from Evelyn and the twins had finally reached their doorstep.

By morning...

May you like

One family would either be destroyed...

Or finally become whole.
