Chapter 1: The Hunt Begins

Chapter 1: The Hunt Begins
Marcus Vale stared at the black diamond ring resting inside the velvet box.
For a long moment, the room seemed to stop breathing.
Anna remained frozen in the doorway, unsure whether to speak or disappear.
Marcus slowly reached for the ring.
His thumb brushed across the cold black stone.
He had searched six countries before finding it—one flawless black diamond set in platinum, as rare as the woman who wore it.
Or had worn it.
He looked up.
"Where is she?"
Anna lowered her eyes.

"I don't know, sir."
His voice became dangerously calm.
"When did anyone last see Evelyn?"
"She had dinner around seven."
"She told the kitchen she wasn't feeling well."
"After that..."
Anna hesitated.
"No one saw her."
Marcus closed the ring box with a sharp snap.
"Search the house."
Anna blinked.
"Sir?"
"Every room."
"The gardens."
"The garages."
"The lake."
His voice grew colder with every word.
"Now."
Within seconds the mansion erupted into motion.
Security teams spread across the estate.
Bodyguards searched every hallway.
Garden lights flooded the grounds.
The gates were sealed.
No vehicle entered.
No vehicle left.
Marcus never moved from the bedroom.
His eyes remained fixed on the cream-colored envelope lying beside the ring.
Bent.
Unopened.
His name was written across the front in Evelyn's careful handwriting.
He stared at it for several long seconds before breaking the seal.
A single sheet of paper slipped into his hand.
Then something else.
A glossy photograph.
Marcus frowned.
It took only one heartbeat for his entire world to collapse.
An ultrasound.
Two tiny figures.
Two unmistakable heartbeats.
His hands began shaking.
He looked back at the letter.
Marcus,
If you're reading this, then I'm already gone.
I wanted tonight to be the happiest night of our lives.
I wanted to tell you that we're having twins.
Instead... I learned the truth about you.
I saw you with Chloe.
I don't know how long it's been happening.
Maybe weeks. Maybe months.
It doesn't matter anymore.
I won't raise our children in a home built on lies.
Don't look for me.
By the time you realize what you've lost...
We'll already belong to another life.
Goodbye.
—Evelyn
Marcus read the letter twice.
Then a third time.
His breathing became uneven.
"No..."
The word barely escaped his lips.
Twins.
She had been carrying his children.
And she believed...
She believed he had betrayed her.
The memory struck him like lightning.
Chloe.
His study.
The blood on the rug.
Marcus suddenly turned toward Anna.
"Where is Chloe?"
Anna swallowed.
"No one can find her either."
Twenty minutes earlier...
The mansion's surveillance director hurried into the security control room carrying a tablet.
"We have footage."
Marcus arrived moments later.
Every guard immediately stepped aside.
The video played.
The hallway outside the study.
7:42 p.m.
Evelyn appeared carrying an envelope beneath her coat.
She smiled.
Marcus felt something twist painfully inside his chest.
She looked...
Happy.
Hopeful.
The study door slowly opened.
She looked inside.
Then...
Everything changed.
Her smile vanished.
Even through the silent recording, Marcus could see the exact moment her heart broke.
She stepped backward.
Closed the door.
Walked away.
Never once looking back.
Marcus clenched his jaw.
"Play inside the study."
The technician hesitated.
"There isn't a camera inside, sir."
Marcus slammed his fist onto the desk.
The monitors shook.
An hour later...
The mansion's physician arrived.
Dr. Harrison had cared for Marcus since childhood.
He examined the ultrasound carefully.
Then looked at Marcus.
"She's approximately twelve weeks."
Marcus nodded silently.
"Morning sickness."
The doctor continued.
"Fatigue."
"Heightened emotions."
"She shouldn't be under severe stress."
Marcus gave a bitter laugh.
"Too late."
Meanwhile...
Three hundred miles away...
Rain continued to fall across the highway.
Evelyn sat in the back corner of a nearly empty bus, wrapped inside an oversized gray sweater.
She had cut eight inches off her hair at a roadside gas station.
The long dark waves Marcus loved now rested unevenly against her shoulders.
A baseball cap hid most of her face.
No makeup.
No jewelry.
Nothing expensive.
Just another exhausted woman traveling alone.
She rested one hand gently against her stomach.
"We're okay."
She whispered the words more for herself than for the babies.
"We're going to be okay."
The older woman sitting across the aisle smiled kindly.
"First baby?"
Evelyn forced a smile.
"Actually..."
She hesitated.
"Two."
The woman laughed warmly.
"My goodness."
"You'll have your hands full."
Evelyn nodded.
"I hope so."
She looked back out the rain-covered window.
Because being busy would leave less time to remember.
Back at the mansion...
Marcus entered his study for the first time since Evelyn disappeared.
The room looked exactly as she had seen it.
The broken whiskey glass remained on the floor.
Blood stained the Persian rug.
He stared at the dark stain.
"Whose blood?"
One of his captains answered quietly.
"We're running DNA."
Marcus slowly walked around the desk.
Then he noticed something.
A button.
Small.
Silver.
Caught beneath the edge of the desk.
He picked it up.
Not from his shirt.
Not from Chloe's dress.
From a man's coat.
Marcus frowned.
"There was someone else here."
Every head in the room turned toward him.
"What?"
Marcus held up the button.
"I don't own a coat like this."
He looked toward Vincent, his head of security.
"Someone entered this room after I did."
Vincent immediately understood.
"I'll review every security angle."
"Every camera."
"Every entrance."
Marcus nodded.
"No mistakes."
Two hours later...
Vincent burst into Marcus's office carrying a hard drive.
"We found something."
Security footage from the rear corridor appeared on the monitor.
7:39 p.m.
A masked man wearing maintenance overalls entered through a service hallway.
7:41 p.m.
The same man disappeared toward Marcus's private study.
7:46 p.m.
He ran back out.
Holding his side.
Bleeding.
Marcus narrowed his eyes.
"Freeze."
The image stopped.
The man's wrist was visible.
A tattoo.
A black serpent wrapped around a dagger.
Marcus's expression darkened.
"The Moretti family."
Vincent nodded.
"It appears so."
Marcus whispered,
"They're behind this."
Suddenly another guard rushed inside.
"Sir."
"We found Miss Chloe."
Marcus turned instantly.
"Alive?"
"Yes."
"Where?"
"An abandoned warehouse near the docks."
"She's injured."
The warehouse smelled of rust and seawater.
Marcus entered surrounded by armed men.
Chloe sat tied to a chair.
Her face was bruised.
Blood dried along one side of her forehead.
When she saw Marcus, tears filled her eyes.
"You have to find Evelyn."
Marcus cut the ropes himself.
"What happened?"
Chloe shook uncontrollably.
"You have to believe me."
"I never betrayed her."
His heartbeat quickened.
"What?"
"I came to warn you."
She struggled to breathe.
"The Moretti family kidnapped me yesterday."
"They wanted access to your study."
"They said if I didn't help them..."
"They'd kill Evelyn."
Marcus stared at her.
"They forced me to wear a wire."
"I fought them."
"I broke the glass."
"I stabbed one of them."
"The blood..."
She looked down.
"...was his."
Marcus remembered the stain.
The silver button.
Everything suddenly aligned.
"The man under the desk."
Chloe nodded desperately.
"He was hiding there."
"He recorded everything."
"When Evelyn opened the door..."
Fresh tears rolled down Chloe's face.
"She saw the wrong moment."
Marcus closed his eyes.
He finally understood.
Evelyn had seen only the instant he grabbed Chloe to pull her away from the armed intruder hidden behind the desk.
She had never seen the knife.
Never heard Chloe screaming.
Never witnessed the struggle.
Only the heartbreaking image that had been carefully engineered for her to find.
Marcus whispered,
"It was a setup."
Chloe nodded.
"They wanted her to leave you."
"They wanted to destroy you without firing a single bullet."
Marcus's face hardened into something terrifying.
Vincent had served beside him for twenty years.
He recognized that expression.
It was the face Marcus wore only once before...
The night he declared war.
Marcus slowly reached into his pocket and unfolded Evelyn's letter one final time.
His thumb rested over the words:
Don't look for me.
He folded it carefully.
Then looked toward every man standing inside the warehouse.
His voice was calm.
Too calm.
"Listen carefully."
The room became perfectly silent.
"No one harms my family."
He looked toward Vincent.
"Empty every safe house."
"Call every captain."
"Wake every informant."
He turned toward Chloe.
"I'm bringing my wife home."
Then his gaze shifted toward the dark harbor beyond the broken warehouse windows.
"And when I do..."
His voice dropped to a whisper that chilled every soul present.
"The Moretti family will learn exactly what it costs..."
"...to steal the future of Marcus Vale."
Far away, Evelyn rested her head against the bus window as dawn slowly painted the horizon in shades of pale gold.
She believed she had escaped the most dangerous man she had ever loved.
She did not yet know the truth.
Marcus was no longer searching for the woman who had left him.
May you like
He was hunting the enemies who had stolen her from him.
And he would burn an empire to the ground before he let them take his children.
