Chapter 7 - The Fractured Dynasty

The boardroom erupted into chaos. Board members stood up, shouting over one another, demanding explanations from Eleanor and her legal team. The allegations on the screen weren't just a corporate scandal; they were a criminal conspiracy.
“This is an outrageous fabrication!” Vance yelled, holding his jaw. “These documents are forged!”
“They are authenticated by the federal authorities, Vance,” Ethan said smoothly, leaning forward. “Because two hours ago, Clara delivered the originals to the Department of Justice. The FBI is currently opening an investigation into Whitmore Enterprises for corporate fraud, witness intimidation, and potentially, manslaughter.”
Eleanor stood up, her face twisted in a mask of pure, venomous rage. She looked at the board members, many of whom were already backing away from her. She looked at Julian, who was staring at the table, completely paralyzed with shame.
“You think you’ve won, Ethan?” Eleanor whispered, her voice carrying a terrifying stillness. “You think you can destroy me? I built this company. I made you. If I fall, I will take every single one of you with me. I will liquidate the family trust today. The company will collapse before sunset.”
“The trust can only be liquidated by a unanimous vote of all living heirs, Mother,” Ethan reminded her, his voice unyielding. “And there is a new heir.”
Ethan turned to the door. Clara opened it, and walking into the boardroom was Lily, holding Annie’s hand. Annie looked small in the massive corporate room, but she wasn't crying anymore. She looked up at the big screen, seeing her father’s face in the old photographs Ethan had included.
“This is Marianne Whitmore,” Ethan announced to the silent board. “Arthur’s daughter. Under the terms of our grandfather’s will, her existence automatically freezes any unilateral actions regarding the trust until a legal guardian is recognized. And as of thirty minutes ago, I have filed for co-guardianship alongside her mother.”
Eleanor stared at the little girl. For a fraction of a second, a shadow of regret crossed her face as she saw the undeniable ghost of her favorite son staring back at her. But her pride quickly choked it out.
“You’ve ruined us,” Eleanor breathed, sinking back into her chair.
“No, Mother,” Ethan said, walking toward Lily and Annie, putting a protective arm around them. “I’ve saved us. Security, escort my mother and Mr. Vance out of the building. They are no longer affiliated with this company.”
As the corporate security guards—now taking orders strictly from Ethan—moved in to escort a silent, broken Eleanor away, the remaining board members looked at Ethan in awe and fear. He had dismantled a matriarch in less than ten minutes.
But the victory felt hollow. Ethan looked down at Annie, who was clutching his sleeve again. The battle inside the boardroom was won, but the battle for their safety and their future was just beginning. The press was still outside, and the public was still clamoring for blood.

“We need to get out of the city,” Lily whispered to Ethan, her eyes filled with exhaustion. “The cameras are everywhere.”
“I know a place,” Ethan said, looking at the photograph of Arthur on the screen. “A place where Arthur wanted to go.”
