Chapter 6 - The Strategy of the Foundation

Thursday afternoon arrived with a cold, piercing wind that rattled the heavy stained-glass windows of the library. Daniel had spent the last eight hours working in complete secrecy, using an encrypted satellite connection provided by Victoria’s private security detail to contact his old network of colleagues at MIT and the Federal Housing Finance Agency.
Lily sat at the small library table, happily eating a plate of artisanal sandwiches Victoria’s private chef had prepared for her. She was currently drawing a picture of the grand mansion, adding a giant dragon on the roof with a yellow crayon.
"Daddy," Lily called out, holding up her drawing. "Does Ms. Victoria live here all by herself?"
Victoria, who was reviewing a draft of the emergency injunction on her tablet, looked up, her expression softening into something genuinely warm. "I do, Lily. It’s a very big house for just one person."
"My mom said that big houses are only good if you open the doors for people who don't have one," Lily said simply, her dark lashes blinking with the absolute innocence of an eight-year-old child.
Victoria froze, her eyes turning toward Daniel, who was pinning a new set of financial timelines to the whiteboard. A deep, profound look of respect passed between the CEO and the architect—a silent understanding of the legacy Sarah Hayes had left behind.
"Your mother was a very wise woman, Lily," Victoria said softly, her voice carrying a hint of emotion she rarely allowed her corporate associates to hear. "And I think we're about to open a lot of doors."
She stood up and walked over to Daniel's whiteboard. "The district attorney’s office has verified the forged engineering stamp, Daniel. They’ve prepared a federal warrant for Marcus Vance’s arrest, but they want to execute it during the board meeting tomorrow morning to prevent him from transferring the remaining stolen funds out of the Delaware trust."
"What about the liquidity crisis?" Daniel asked, turning to face her. "Even if Vance goes to jail, Whitmore Capital still needs $20 million by Friday afternoon to avoid foreclosure."
Victoria smiled, a sharp, brilliant expression that showed exactly why she had been chosen to lead the firm despite her age. "That’s where your design comes in, Daniel. I spent the last three hours on a video conference with the director of the Pennsylvania Housing Finance Agency and the regional head of HUD. When I showed them your structural blueprints for The Sarah Hayes Sanctuary—and paired it with the forensic proof that Vance had tried to steal the land—they offered us an immediate, emergency federal housing stabilization grant."
She tapped her tablet, showing a pre-approved financial authorization form.

"The government isn't just funding the project, Daniel," Victoria whispered, her eyes shining with triumph. "They are providing an immediate $22.5 million capital injection to Whitmore as the primary development partner. It covers our debt, saves our subsidiaries, and fully funds the construction of your sanctuary down to the very last brick."
Daniel stared at the document, a sudden, overwhelming wave of emotion crashing over his chest. He could almost feel Sarah’s hand on his shoulder, her voice whispering the words from her last letter: Don't stop building.

"We just have to survive the board meeting tomorrow at 9:00 AM," Daniel said, his voice thick.
"Oh, we’re going to do more than survive, Daniel," Victoria said, her jaw tightening as she looked toward the window. "We’re going to show Marcus Vance what happens when you try to demolish a structure built on the truth."
