Chapter 5 - The Collapse of an Empire

The signing of the final decree took less than twenty minutes, but for Richard, it was the execution of his entire social standing.

When we emerged from the judge’s chambers back into the main hallway of the courthouse, the world had already begun to move on. The rain outside had stopped, replaced by a pale, watery sunlight that cut through the tall arched windows of the marble building.

Richard stood near the elevators, his jacket rumpled, his tie slightly crooked. His lawyer had already left, probably rushing back to his office to send a massive bill before his client’s assets were officially frozen by the court order.

He looked at me as I walked toward the exit with Arthur and Sarah, Lily’s small hand tucked securely into mine.

"You think you won, Clara?" he said, his voice quiet now, lacking the theatrical roar of the courtroom, filled instead with a desperate, bitter venom. "The board of Apex won't accept you as a partner. They know me. They don't know you. You’re going to walk into that office next week and they’re going to laugh you out of the room."

Arthur Pendelton stepped forward, his leather briefcase clicking as he adjusted his grip. "Mr. Corporate, perhaps you misunderstand the nature of a thirty-two million dollar estate. My firm has spent the last forty-eight hours purchasing the outstanding corporate debt of Apex Design Solutions. As of 9:00 a.m. this morning, the Whitaker Trust is the primary lienholder on your corporate headquarters, your fleet vehicles, and your operating lines of credit. If the board doesn't accept Clara... she won't just fire them. She will foreclose on the entire building and leave you with nothing but the office chairs."

Richard blinked, his mouth opening and closing silently like a fish out of water. The realization that he hadn't just lost a divorce, but had been completely and systematically outmaneuvered by a dead woman and a housewife, seemed to finally crush what was left of his pride.

The elevator doors slid open behind him with a soft chime. He stepped inside without another word, his head down, looking every bit the small, fragile man he had always tried to hide behind his loud voice.

As the steel doors slid shut, separating us forever, Lily looked up at me, her brown eyes clear and peaceful. "Is Daddy going away?"

I knelt down on the cold marble floor, looking into her face, tucking a loose strand of her brown hair behind her ear. "Daddy is going to live in a different house now, sweetheart. But you and I are going to build a brand new one. A house where nobody tells us to be quiet. A house where we can have as many colors as we want."

Lily’s face broke into the first real, genuine smile I had seen in months. She wrapped her small arms around my neck, hugging me tight. "Can we have a green room, Mommy? Like the forest?"

"We can have a whole house of green, Lily," I whispered, holding her close, feeling the weight of the last seven years finally lift from my chest, dissipating into the clean afternoon air.
