Chapter 9 - The Vow of the Iron Ribbon

The renewal of the Rossi marriage vows took place exactly one year after the disaster at the Fairmont Club.

It did not take place in a grand ballroom or under a crystal chandelier. It took place on a warm, brilliant evening in June, in the small, cobblestone courtyard of the old St. Leonard’s Church in the North End—the same church where Rosa Rossi had married Gabriel’s father forty years prior.

The courtyard was transformed into a paradise of white jasmine, cascading ivy, and soft gold fairy lights that matched the stars beginning to appear in the summer sky. Only fifty guests were present—the captains of the Rossi family, their wives, Vivienne’s parents, and the local shop owners from the neighborhood who viewed Gabriel not as a boss, but as a protector.

The string quartet played a soft, soaring melody as Vivienne walked down the short aisle.

She looked absolutely breathtaking. She wore a simple, structured gown of pure white linen—a dress she had designed herself, entirely free of the suffocating corsets and heavy beadwork of her first wedding. Her blond hair was styled in soft, natural waves, and around her neck, shining like a beacon of absolute survival, was the heavy gold necklace with the dark red stone.

Gabriel stood at the wooden altar, looking devastatingly handsome in a classic black tuxedo. As he watched her walk toward him, his dark eyes, which had never flinched in front of enemies or weapons, filled with tears of pure, unadulterated devotion.

When Vivienne reached his side, he took her hands in his. They were warm, solid, and bore the tiny, proud marks of a woman who had worked for her happiness.

The priest smiled at them, his voice carrying clearly over the gentle hum of the neighborhood. "We are gathered here today to witness the true binding of two paths. A union that began in the shadow of a debt, but has officially been redeemed by the currency of the heart."

When it was time for the vows, Gabriel didn't read from a card. He looked directly into Vivienne’s eyes, his baritone voice clear and vibrating with an emotion that silenced the entire courtyard.

"Vivienne," he said, his large fingers gently squeezing hers. "A year ago, I brought you into my house to punish your family’s arrogance. I wanted to show you the power of my world. But instead, you showed me the power of yours. You learned our history, you honored my mother, and you stood on a dark pier in front of guns to protect our name. You are not a ribbon tied around a loaded gun anymore, Vivienne. You are the hand that holds it. I promise to honor your strength, to protect your peace, and to spend the rest of my life ensuring that you are always the queen of my heart, just as my mother is the queen of my soul."

Vivienne smiled through her tears, her voice beautiful, elegant, and perfectly stable. "Gabriel, I spent my whole life living in a glass house, terrified of the day the windows would break. But you broke the glass for me. You showed me that true value isn't something we inherit; it's something we build with our own hands on top of the stones we scrub. I don't need a shield anymore, Gabriel. I have you. I promise to be your anchor, your partner, and your light, through every shadow that dares to touch our gates."

They exchanged simple rings of polished gold, their designs matching the ancient chain around Vivienne's neck.

In the front row, Rosa Rossi stood up.

She wore her beautiful plum dress, her silver hair styled perfectly, her face illuminated by a radiant, magnificent smile. She didn't look like a peasant; she looked like the true matriarch of the empire, her eyes flashing with a fierce, joyful intelligence as she watched her children.

She reached out with her left hand—the wrist fully healed, leaving no scar—and clapped loudly, her rhythmic applause instantly triggering a roaring cheer from the entire courtyard. Marco and the captains shouted in celebration, throwing white rose petals into the air as the string quartet burst into a triumphant, lively Italian melody.

Gabriel pulled Vivienne into his arms, his mouth meeting hers in a deep, joyful kiss that sealed their past into history and opened the gate to their future. The gold fairy lights glittered around them like a sea of diamonds, but Vivienne didn't look at them. She looked into her husband’s eyes and knew that the monsters of the world would always kneel—not just for the women who raised them, but for the women who taught them how to love.
