Chapter 2: The Empire Strikes Back

By midnight, the gala had transitioned into an exclusive after-party, but the real drama was unfolding in the executive boardroom on the top floor of the showroom. The atmosphere was thick with tension. The walls were lined with glass cases displaying historical fashion achievements, but tonight, the only thing on display was corporate warfare.
Maya sat at the long mahogany table, still wearing her faded blue janitorial uniform. Beside her stood Elena Vance and a team of high-powered corporate attorneys. Across the table sat Regina, flanked by the company’s chief legal officer and two nervous-looking public relations executives.
The power dynamic had completely inverted. The video of Maya saving the dress had gone viral on every major social media platform, accumulating over thirty million views in less than three hours. Fashion critics worldwide were hailing Maya as the "Janitor Genius," while Regina was being thoroughly dragged online for her public tantrum and for destroying Maya's sketchbook—an act that had been caught on a guest's livestream.

"This is an outrage," Regina hissed, slamming her manicured hands onto the table. "Maya was an at-will employee who was terminated for insubordination prior to the incident. Technically, her presence on the red carpet was trespassing! Anything she created while using our facilities belongs to the corporate entity under the standard intellectual property clause!"
Elena’s lead attorney, a sharp woman named Sarah, let out a cold, mocking laugh. "Regina, please. You fired her publicly. There are fifty different video angles of you telling her to leave the building. The moment you terminated her, she was no longer bound by any corporate IP agreement. Furthermore, she used her own personal tools and materials to salvage a dress that my client owns. If anyone has a claim to Maya's genius tonight, it is Ms. Vance, who has already contracted Maya for an exclusive styling engagement for the upcoming Paris Fashion Week."
Regina looked as if she had swallowed broken glass. She turned to her own chief legal officer, expecting defense, but the man only looked down at his tablet, refusing to make eye contact.
"Regina," the legal officer said quietly. "The board of directors has been reviewing the footage. The public relations fallout is catastrophic. Stock prices for our luxury retail division dropped four percent in after-hours trading. The internet is demanding your resignation. They are calling for a complete boycott of our brands."
"I built this division!" Regina screamed, her polished facade completely shattering. "You cannot sacrifice me for a glorified maid! She has no formal training! She’s a nobody!"
"She is the woman who saved your largest account from a multi-million dollar lawsuit," Sarah countered sharply. "If Maya hadn't intervened, Elena would have walked onto a global broadcast with a destroyed wardrobe. The brand damage to the Parisian fashion house and this showroom would have been fatal. Maya didn't just save a dress, Regina. She saved this company."
Seeing her career slipping away, Regina’s desperation mutated into vicious malice. She leaned over the table, her eyes narrowing as she looked at Maya. "You think you’ve won, don't you? You think a few million likes on the internet makes you a designer? You’re a thief, Maya. Where did you get the sketches in that book I destroyed? You stole those concepts from our archive room while you were cleaning the executive offices. I’ve seen the security logs. You’ve been sneaking around the creative department for months!"
It was a blatant, fabricated lie, a desperate attempt to frame Maya for corporate espionage and invalidate her talent. The room went quiet. Regina’s PR team immediately began whispering, sensing a potential narrative they could spin to save their own skins.
Maya, who had remained silent throughout the entire meeting, finally leaned forward. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, burnt fragment of the sketchbook that she had managed to retrieve from the floor after Regina had ripped it. It was a drawing of a specific, intricate sleeve pattern—the exact pattern she had used to recreate Elena's dress.

"I didn't steal anything, Regina," Maya said, her voice piercing through the corporate noise with absolute clarity. "I've worked here for two years. Every night, after you left, I cleaned up the scraps of fabric your designers threw into the trash. I studied the grain, the weight, the errors. I didn't learn from your archives. I learned from your waste. And if you think I stole these designs, let's bring the board directors up here right now. Let's give me a sewing machine, a blank piece of fabric, and sixty minutes. Let's see who can actually create, and who can only destroy."
Regina opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. She looked at the legal officer, who simply closed his laptop. The trap had closed. Regina’s toxic arrogance had finally left her completely alone.
