Chapter 3: The Depths of Betrayal

The weeks turned into months, and the criminal trial of the century was fast approaching. Margaret and Ethan had been denied bail, flagged as extreme flight risks due to their offshore accounts and international connections. They were being held in separate wings of the Plymouth County Correctional Facility.

On a rainy Tuesday afternoon, Samuel Brooks called me into his office with a grim expression. “Hannah, Ethan’s defense attorney has filed a motion for a plea agreement. Ethan is offering to testify fully against his mother in exchange for a reduced sentence and the dismissal of the grand larceny charges. He wants to see you before the judge reviews the motion.”

My stomach twisted into a cold knot. “I don't want to see him, Samuel.”

“I know,” Samuel said softly, placing a gentle hand on my shoulder. “But legally, if he exposes the full depth of Margaret’s network, we can dismantle her political connections permanently. It ensures she can never launch an appeal or threaten you and Lily from behind bars. You need to hear what he’s offering.”

An hour later, I stood inside the glass-walled visitation room of the correctional facility. Jonathan stood right outside the heavy steel door, his presence an iron shield of protection.

When the guards led Ethan inside, I almost didn't recognize him. The pristine, expensive designer suits were gone, replaced by a drab, oversized orange jumpsuit. His hair was unkempt, his face gaunt and covered in an uneven stubble. He looked like a hollow shell of the confident, charming man I had married.

He sat down across from me, the glass barrier separating us, and slowly picked up the plastic intercom phone. I did the same, keeping my face a rigid mask of stone.

“Hannah…” Ethan whispered, his voice cracking as a tear immediately escaped his eye. “Thank you for coming. You look… you look beautiful. How is Lily?”

“Do not say her name, Ethan,” I said, my voice dangerously low, slicing through his pathetic display of emotion. “You don't have the right to ask about my daughter. Tell me why I shouldn't let the prosecutor demand the maximum twenty-year sentence for what you did to us.”

Ethan buried his face in his free hand, his shoulders shaking. “I was stupid, Hannah! You have to believe me! My mother… she’s a monster. She controlled everything since I was a kid. She convinced me that you were using the trust money to ruin my reputation. She told me that Dr. Brooks was helping you hide the money so you could leave me and take the baby away forever.”

“So you forged her birth certificate?” I asked, my grip on the phone tightening until my knuckles turned white. “You secretly recorded our private arguments, edited my voice to make me sound insane, and tried to have me locked in a psychiatric ward twenty-four hours after I pushed our daughter into the world? You left me bleeding and terrified in a hospital bed while you calculated how to spend my inheritance, Ethan!”

“She planned the psychiatric hold, Hannah! Not me!” Ethan cried out, his face pressing against the glass. “She had a private clinic in Vermont lined up. The moment the judge signed the temporary custody order, they were going to transfer you there under a forced medical hold. She was going to keep you heavily medicated for years so you could never challenge the corporate proxy! I didn't know she was going to go that far, I swear! I have the records, Hannah. I have the signed agreements between my mother and the clinic directors hidden in a private digital vault. I’ll give you the passwords. I’ll give the prosecution everything they need to lock her away for life. Just please… don't let them give me twenty years. I can’t survive in here.”

I stared at him through the glass, a profound, chilling realization settling over me. The plot had been far more sinister than a simple financial scam. They hadn't just wanted my money; they had planned to erase my entire existence, to lock me in a medicated prison while my daughter grew up believing her mother had abandoned her.

I slowly stood up, lowering the phone.

“Hannah! Please!” Ethan begged, tapping frantically against the glass as the guards stepped forward to pull him back toward his cell. “Don't leave me in here! I’m Lily’s father! You loved me!”

I looked at him one last time, feeling nothing but a profound, hollow pity. “The father of my daughter is a man who would protect her life with his own,” I said, my voice carrying clearly through the intercom before I hung it up. “You are just a parasite who shared her DNA. Enjoy your cell, Ethan.”
