Chapter 4 - The Siege of Westchester

The estate’s emergency klaxons began to wail, a low, ominous droning sound that vibrated through the floorboards. The lights in the library instantly flickered, shifting to a deep, crimson emergency backup hue.
Gabriel’s transformation was instantaneous. The vulnerable man from a moment ago vanished, replaced by the cold, calculating warlord of the Moretti empire. He released Elena's wrists and drew his Glock from his waistband in a single, seamless motion.
"Vincent, take Elena down to the safe room," Gabriel ordered, his voice cutting through the alarms like a knife through silk. "Activate the automated perimeter defenses. I want every available man on the first-floor perimeter."
"Gabriel, no!" Elena protested, her instinctual fear returning full force. "What about Daniel?"
"Daniel is already in the hardened bunker beneath the medical bay," Gabriel said, turning to look at her one last time. He reached out, his thumb gently brushing a stray tear from her cheek. "Go with Vincent, Elena. Do not leave the safe room until I come for you. Trust me."
"Don't die," Elena whispered, the words slipping out before she could stop them.
Gabriel gave her a grim, fleeting smile that looked more like a promise of execution for his enemies than a reassurance of life. "I have too much to live for now."
Vincent grabbed Elena’s uninjured arm, guiding her quickly out of the library and down a hidden service corridor. All around them, the sounds of war were erupting. The heavy, syncopated rhythm of automatic gunfire shattered the peaceful country silence outside. Explosions rocked the foundations of the house as the Lucchesi strike team used thermal charges to blow through the reinforced glass of the conservatory.
They sprinted down a flight of concrete stairs into the bowels of the estate. Vincent punched a complex, twelve-digit code into a heavy biometric security door, which hissed open to reveal a highly advanced safe room lined with surveillance monitors, medical supplies, and weapons racks.
Daniel was already inside, curled up on a small cot with his drawing supplies, looking frightened but safe.
"Elena!" the boy cried out, running to her as soon as she entered. Elena caught him in her arms, lifting him tightly against her chest, holding him as if she could absorb his fear into her own body.
"I’m here, Daniel. I'm right here," she whispered, rocking him gently.
Vincent stepped into the room, checking the feed on the security monitors. The screens showed the estate's lawns illuminated by flares and gunfire. Gabriel’s men, trained mercenaries and hardened soldiers, were holding the line, but the Lucchesis had brought overwhelming numbers. They were desperate; this was a decapitation strike meant to end the Moretti line once and for all.
Suddenly, the monitor displaying the main hallway on the first floor flickered and died. Then another screen went black. And another.
"They've got a jammer," Vincent muttered, his brow furrowing. "They're cutting our eyes."
A massive explosion shook the safe room from above, causing dust to shower down from the reinforced ceiling ventilation. The power grid hissed, and the lights inside the safe room died completely, plunging them into absolute, pitch-black darkness.
Daniel shrieked, burying his face in Elena's neck.
"Vincent?" Elena called out into the dark, her heart hammering against her ribs like a trapped bird.
No response.
"Vincent!" she called louder.
A wet, heavy thud echoed from the direction of the doorway, followed by the terrifying sound of a body dragging across the concrete floor. Elena froze, her breath catching in her throat. That wasn't Vincent's heavy, rhythmic step.
A flashlight beam suddenly sliced through the darkness, blinding her.
Behind the light stood a man wearing a tactical mask, a silenced submachine gun raised in his hands. He looked down at the crumpled form of Vincent Kane, who lay unconscious near the biometric control panel, blood pooling from a heavy head wound.
The assassin advanced into the safe room, the beam of his flashlight sweeping over Elena and Daniel.
"Well, look at that," a raspy, cruel voice laughed from behind the mask. "The boss said there was a maid down here holding the prize. Step away from the kid, sweetheart, and maybe I’ll make it quick for you."
Elena felt the cold, suffocating wave of terror wash over her, exactly like the night at the hospital. But as she looked down at Daniel, who was trembling violently in her arms, crying silently, something inside her snapped for the second time. The fear didn't paralyze her; it transformed into a white-hot, blinding fury.
She thought of Gabriel’s words: I protect what is mine.
Slowly, carefully, Elena set Daniel down behind her, using her own body to block him from the assassin's view. Her hand secretly drifted down to her side, her fingers searching the floor in the dark until they wrapped around the heavy, steel flashlight that Vincent had dropped when he was struck.
"Please," Elena begged, her voice sounding weak, trembling, playing the part of the helpless victim. "Don't hurt him. He’s just a child."
"In this city, blood is blood," the assassin said, taking another step forward, raising the barrel of his weapon directly toward her chest.
Elena didn't wait for him to pull the trigger. With a feral cry born of pure maternal instinct, she launched herself forward. She threw her weight low, swinging the heavy steel flashlight with all the strength in her body, striking the assassin squarely in the side of his knee.
A loud, sickening crack echoed through the room as the man’s kneecap shattered. He roared in agony, his weapon firing a wild burst into the reinforced concrete ceiling as he collapsed to the floor.
Before he could recover, Elena scrambled on top of him, pinning his weapon arm with her knee, her small hands clawing frantically at his face mask, ripping it away to reveal a terrified, bleeding face. She raised the heavy flashlight again, ready to strike—
"Elena!"
A massive, powerful hand caught her wrist mid-air.
Elena blinked through the tears and adrenaline, looking up. Gabriel stood above her, his face splattered with soot and blood, his black shirt torn to shreds, but his eyes wide with a mixture of horror and absolute awe. Behind him, a dozen Moretti soldiers flooded the safe room, instantly securing the perimeter and treating the wounded Vincent.
Gabriel dropped to his knees, wrapping his massive arms around Elena, pulling her fiercely against his chest. He held her so tight she could feel the thunderous, erratic beating of his heart.

"I’ve got you," Gabriel roared, his voice cracking with an emotion he could no longer contain. "I've got you. It's over. They're all dead. It's over."
Elena finally let go of the flashlight, her body going completely limp against his solid frame, her tears soaking into his blood-stained shirt as Daniel crawled over, wrapping his small arms around both of them, completing the circle.
