Chapter 6 - The Port Authority Tribunal

The hearing room of the Lake Michigan Port Authority was a space lined with heavy walnut paneling, oil paintings of nineteenth-century steamships, and a massive horseshoe-shaped bench where five municipal commissioners sat looking down at the crowd with an expression of weary, bureaucratic indifference.

At 9:00 AM on Friday, the gallery was packed with corporate lawyers, city officials, and journalists from the financial press.

Arthur Hartwell sat at the left table, surrounded by six senior partners from the city’s largest corporate law firm. He looked massive, pristine, and completely victorious, his silver hair catching the bright light of the chandeliers. Vivian sat beside him, wearing a dark green wool dress that made her look like a piece of high-end corporate sculpture, her eyes fixed on the blank surface of her tablet.

Gabriel sat at the right table alone. He didn't bring lawyers; he didn't bring folders. He sat with his hands resting flat on the mahogany table, his gray eyes fixed on the empty space between the two podiums.

"This commission will come to order," the lead commissioner, a man named Henderson with a thick Chicago accent, said, tapping his gavel twice. "We are here to consider an emergency petition filed by Hartwell Logistics regarding a suspected security breach at the Wren South Side Terminal. Mr. Hartwell, you have five minutes to present your findings."

Arthur stood up, his voice booming through the vaulted room like a bass drum. "Thank you, Commissioner. As documented in the briefs we submitted this morning, our private security team received an anonymous tip last night regarding an unregistered shipment of high-grade military hardware currently sitting inside the automated bay of the Wren terminal. We brought the federal compliance officers in at midnight, and they recovered three crates of automatic rifles hidden beneath a shipment of industrial pipe."

A loud murmur ran through the press row.

"We believe," Arthur continued, looking down at Gabriel with a look of cold, patronizing pity, "that the Wren Logistics network has been severely compromised by its current financial instability. When a company owes four hundred million dollars to a Swiss bank, its management becomes susceptible to... alternative streams of revenue. We ask for an immediate ninety-day suspension of their domestic shipping certificates while a full federal grand jury is empaneled."

Commissioner Henderson looked down at Gabriel. "Mr. Wren. This is an incredibly serious allegation. The compliance officers have verified the recovery of the weapons. What do you have to say for yourself?"

Gabriel didn't stand up. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a small, metallic flash drive, and slid it into the media port mounted on the side of his table.

The two massive projection screens on either side of the commissioners' bench blinked to life.

Instead of a financial report, the screens displayed a live, high-definition security log containing the vehicle registration numbers, names, and digital key-card signatures of three men who had entered the Wren South Side Terminal at 11:14 PM the previous evening.

The name listed at the top of the log was Thomas Vance—the head of Vivian Hartwell’s personal security detail.

"What is the meaning of this?" Arthur Hartwell shouted, standing up from his table, his face turning an angry, dark red. "That log is a fabrication! The South Side terminal logs were fully audited by the federal team this morning and showed no entry from our people!"

"The main terminal logs were altered at midnight from a terminal inside your daughter’s dressing room in Lake Forest, Arthur," Gabriel said, his voice quiet, but carrying a sharp, crystalline clarity that silenced the entire room. "But what you’re looking at right now isn't the main server. It’s the mirror log from Aegis Shipping—the Delaware shell company your daughter uses to hide her Baltic customs fraud from the SEC."

Vivian’s tablet slipped from her fingers, striking the mahogany table with a loud, hollow clack before sliding onto the floor. Her face went completely white, her eyes widening into pools of absolute terror as she stared at the screens.

Gabriel finally stood up, his long coat billowing behind him as he stepped into the center of the well. "The data currently being transmitted to the commissioners’ bench includes the complete routing slips for the last three years of Hartwell cargo. It proves that every single weapon recovered from my terminal last night was purchased by a Hartwell subsidiary in Hamburg four weeks ago and moved into this country on a ship owned by your own family, Arthur."

He turned his head, looking directly at Vivian. "And the blue folder my former accountant found in your study on Tuesday night? It holds the original signatures from your daughter authorizing the customs bypass. Commissioner Henderson... I believe the federal inspectors are currently waiting outside the door to serve Mr. Hartwell and his daughter with a grand jury warrant for treason and corporate espionage."

The double doors at the back of the room swung open with a loud, dramatic bang. Four agents from the Department of Homeland Security stepped into the gallery, their badges gleaming under the crystal chandeliers as they moved toward the left table.
