Chapter 4: The Poisoned Gala

Three months later, the transformation of Norah Hale was complete—at least on the surface.

The faded blue work apron had been replaced by custom-tailored silk gowns from Milan, her rough, calloused hands softened by expensive oils, and her hair styled into a sleek, elegant chignon that befitted the future matriarch of the Bellisario empire. Under the strict, relentless tutelage of Julian Vance and Dominic himself, she had learned the complex etiquette of New York’s high society, the names of the five major families, and the specific, subtle languages of disrespect used by the criminal elite.

Yet, inside the massive estate, the only thing that mattered to Norah was Mia. The little girl had blossomed under her care, her voice returning in full, vibrant bursts of laughter as they spent their afternoons baking cookies in the mansion’s commercial kitchen or reading fairy tales in the garden. To Mia, Norah was simply 'Mama'—the woman who had rescued her from the dark.

The first true test of their arrangement arrived in the form of the annual Winter Solstice Gala—a massive, high-security charity event held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where the city’s political elite, business tycoons, and underground bosses gathered to broker peace and display their power.

"Stay close to me, keep your chin up, and do not apologize to anyone," Dominic instructed as the armored limousine pulled up to the red carpet outside the museum. He looked stunning in a black velvet tuxedo, his silver eyes scanning the crowd of paparazzi with a clinical alertness. He reached across the leather seat, his large hand wrapping around Norah’s cold fingers. "You look beautiful, Norah. Remember who you are tonight."

"I'm a lie," she whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"You are my fiancée," Dominic corrected, his voice dropping into a low, surprisingly warm tone as he squeezed her hand. "And there is nothing fake about the way you protect my daughter. Hold onto that."

The grand ballroom of the museum was a sea of glittering diamonds, expensive champagne, and hidden tension. As Dominic guided Norah through the crowd, a path cleared automatically, the city’s most powerful figures bowing their heads in respectful fear. Norah played her part flawlessly, smiling softly, speaking only when spoken to, and letting her hand rest naturally on Dominic’s forearm.

Halfway through the evening, Dominic was called away to a private balcony by the city’s mayor and two senior caporegimes to discuss a pending port labor dispute. "I will be back in five minutes," he whispered to Norah, kissing her cheek in a public display of affection that made her skin tingle. "Angelo is right behind you. Do not wander off."

Norah nodded, stepping toward a quiet alcove near the ancient Egyptian exhibit to catch her breath. The silence of the stone sarcophagi was a relief after the noise of the ballroom.

"Well, well. Look what the rain washed into the upper echelons of Manhattan," a sharp, venomous voice called out from the shadows of the pillars.

Norah turned to find a beautiful woman wearing a crimson silk dress that looked like spilled blood. It was Victoria Moretti—the daughter of the rival Don and the woman who had originally been slated to marry Dominic before the war between their families erupted. Behind her stood two large, muscular men whose jackets bulged with hidden weapons.

"Miss Moretti," Norah said, her voice steadying as she recalled Julian’s briefings. "I didn't realize you were on the guest list tonight."

"I own half the foundations that fund this museum, sweetheart," Victoria sneered, stepping closer until she was standing inches from Norah. Her eyes dropped to the massive diamond ring on Norah's finger. "Dominic thinks he’s being clever. He hides his broken little daughter away for a year, and then suddenly pops up with a beautiful, unknown fiancée from 'abroad.' But New York is a small town, Norah. Especially for people who look for things."

Norah felt a cold dread settle into her stomach. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"I'm talking about Bellamy Wash & Fold," Victoria hissed, her voice a lethal whisper that didn't carry into the main ballroom. She pulled a small, glossy photograph from her evening clutch and held it up. It was a security still of Norah, wearing her faded blue apron, counting quarters beneath the flickering sign.

"You're a laundry girl," Victoria laughed, a cruel, high-pitched sound. "A minimum-wage nobody who got lucky because my father’s soldiers missed their shot at the kid. Dominic isn't marrying you for love; he’s using you as a human shield to keep his daughter stable. And the moment the world finds out the great Bellisario Don is sleeping with a servant... his empire will become the joke of the tri-state area."

Norah looked at the photograph, then at Victoria’s triumphant, vicious expression. For three months, she had been terrified of this exact moment—the moment her past would catch up to her and destroy the fragile safety she had built for Mia.

But as she looked at Victoria, she realized something else. Victoria didn't care about the empire. She was jealous. She was furious that a nobody from Queens had taken the seat she had spent her life preparing for.

Norah took a slow, deliberate breath, straightening her shoulders until her silk gown caught the light of the exhibit.

"You're right, Victoria," Norah said, her voice dropping into a calm, unyielding tone that made the rival heiress flinch. "I am a laundry girl from Queens. I know exactly how much blood costs to get out of Italian wool. I know how to spot a dirty shirt from across the room. And right now... I’m looking at a woman who is completely covered in desperation."

"You little bitch—" Victoria stepped forward, her hand rising to strike.

Before her fingers could move an inch, a massive, gloved hand clutched her wrist from behind. Dominic had appeared from the shadows like a ghost, his face completely devoid of expression, his silver eyes flashing with a light that made Victoria’s guards instantly freeze, their hands dropping away from their jackets as they realized they were surrounded by six of Dominic's elite hitmen.

"Victoria," Dominic said softly, his voice a low, vibrating growl that made the entire alcove feel like a tomb. "You are currently holding a photograph of my future wife on my property. That constitutes an act of corporate espionage and a personal insult to my name."

"Dominic, she’s a fraud!" Victoria cried out, trying to twist her wrist free from his iron grip. "She’s a nobody! Your family will be ruined if people find out!"

Dominic leaned down, his face inches from Victoria's, his grip tightening until her rings cut into her fingers. "Let me explain something to you, Miss Moretti. I don't care if she was a queen or a beggar before she entered my house. She is the woman who stood between a bullet and my daughter when your father's cowards were running through the rain. That makes her more of a Bellisario than anyone in this room. If this photograph, or a single rumor about her past, leaves this museum tonight... I will personally execute your father in his own bed, and I will hand your brothers over to the port authority in pieces. Do you understand me?"

Victoria stared at him, her face turning a sickly, terrified shade of white. She nodded quickly, her breath catching in her throat.

Dominic released her wrist with a dismissive shove, turning his back on her completely as if she no longer existed. He reached out, took Norah's hand, and guided her back toward the bright lights of the grand ballroom, leaving the shattered remnants of the Moretti threat behind them in the dark.
