Chapter 5: The Resurrection of Valois

Chapter 5: The Resurrection of Valois

The grand ballroom was a spectacle of corruption. Lord Alistair, a heavy-set man dripping in gold chains and velvet robes, stood at the center of the raised dais, lifting a glass of champagne to his wealthy investors.

“To a new era of profit!” Alistair cheered. “With the final Valois taxes cleared, this city belongs entirely to us!”

Suddenly, the massive double doors of the ballroom were thrown open.

The music stopped. The guests turned around, expecting another grand performance. Instead, they saw a wall of people. Dozens of hotel staff, bakery workers, and common citizens stepped into the room, led by Marcus and Chief Legal Counsel Sterling, who had been summoned from his hiding place.

And at the very front, walking with a dignity that defied their stained clothes, were Leo and Lily. Lily’s silver phoenix necklace gleamed like a star under the ballroom’s crystal chandeliers.

“What is the meaning of this insolence?” Alistair roared, slamming his glass down. “Security, execute these trespassers!”

The hotel security guards stepped forward, but instead of attacking the staff, they turned around, lowering their iron batons and facing the dais, blocking Alistair from his guests.

“The security forces belong to the Valois estate, Alistair,” Marcus said, his voice echoing through the vaulted ceiling. “And their true employer has just returned.”

Mr. Sterling stepped forward, unrolling a massive, certified document bearing the supreme provincial seal. “Lord Alistair, by the authority of the High Constitutional Court and the original deeds preserved by Monsieur Albert—who has just been liberated from your guardhouse by the people—your emergency rule is officially terminated.”

Alistair’s face turned a violent shade of purple. “Those children are imposters! The Valois family died in the fire!”

“The blood doesn't lie, Alistair,” Sterling countered, pointing to Leo. “We have already verified the lineage through the High Bank’s biometric vaults. Every account you used to fund your regime has been frozen by the international oversight committee as of five minutes ago. You are no longer the Regent. You are a bankrupt criminal.”

Alistair lunged toward the back exit, but the doors behind the dais opened, revealing Captain Thomas in handcuffs, flanked by the imperial police force who had finally turned against the corrupt regime.

As Alistair was dragged away in chains, his screams of fury fading down the grand corridor, the ballroom fell into a profound, respectful silence.

The wealthy investors and guests slowly turned toward the center aisle, looking at the ten-year-old boy in the ripped red shirt and his little sister in the cream dress. One by one, the elite of the city dropped to their knees, bowing before the true heirs of the empire.

Leo didn't look at them with arrogance. He looked down at Lily, who was smiling, her eyes bright with tears as Monsieur Albert walked into the ballroom, bruised but grinning from ear to ear, carrying a fresh, warm loaf of bread.

“We did it, Leo,” Lily whispered, clutching his hand. “We’re home.”

“Yes, Lily,” Leo said, his voice strong and clear as he looked out over the grand estate that would now be managed with justice, charity, and honor. “We’re home. And no one will ever go hungry in this city again.”
