CHAPTER 1: THE METAL SECRET INSIDE THE GUM

CHAPTER 1: THE METAL SECRET INSIDE THE GUM

The emergency room suddenly became silent.

Nurse Emily Parker stared at the small metallic object that had just fallen onto the stainless steel tray.

A moment earlier, she had been removing a hardened wad of gum lodged inside seven-year-old Lily Harper's mouth.

Now everyone was frozen.

The object was tiny.

Silver.

Covered in sticky residue.

And engraved with numbers.

Emily carefully picked it up with forceps.

“Doctor…”

She whispered.

Dr. Nathan Reed walked over immediately.

“What is it?”

Emily handed him the tray.

His eyes narrowed.

“It looks like…”

He stopped speaking.

Then his expression changed completely.

The object wasn't random.

It was a micro SD card.

Everyone inside the examination room exchanged confused glances.

Lily sat quietly on the hospital bed clutching a worn stuffed rabbit.

Her blonde hair was messy.

Her sweater was too big.

And dark circles surrounded her eyes.

Nathan crouched down beside her.

“Lily?”

She looked up.

“Sweetheart, how did this get into your mouth?”

The little girl blinked.

Then shrugged.

“A man said never to lose it.”

Emily and Nathan immediately looked at each other.

“Which man?”

Lily squeezed her rabbit tighter.

“The one Mommy was scared of.”

A chill spread across the room.

Nathan softened his voice.

“Where's your mother?”

Lily looked toward the floor.

“She fell asleep.”

Emily frowned.

“Where?”

Lily pointed toward the waiting area.

Everyone rushed outside.

A woman sat slumped in a chair.

Early thirties.

Pale.

Exhausted.

Barely conscious.

An empty water bottle rolled near her feet.

Nathan immediately checked her vitals.

“She’s dehydrated.”

Emily gently woke her.

“Ma'am?”

The woman startled awake.

Instant panic flooded her face.

“Lily!”

She immediately stood.

Then froze when she saw the micro SD card.

Her face lost all color.

“Oh no.”

Emily spoke softly.

“Do you know what this is?”

The woman stared at it.

Then tears instantly filled her eyes.

“Oh God…”

She grabbed Lily and hugged her tightly.

“You still have it.”

Nathan intervened gently.

“Ma'am, we need answers.”

She looked around the room.

Terrified.

As if someone was watching.

Then she whispered…

“We can't talk here.”

Emily frowned.

“What do you mean?”

The woman looked toward the windows.

Toward the entrance.

Toward every stranger passing by.

“They'll find us.”

Nathan spoke calmly.

“Who?”

Her lips trembled.

“My husband.”

Silence.

The room instantly changed.

Emily led them into a private consultation room.

The woman introduced herself.

“My name is Sarah Harper.”

Nathan sat beside her.

“Tell us everything.”

Sarah inhaled deeply.

“Three months ago…”

She looked at Lily.

“…my husband changed.”

Nathan listened carefully.

“He became secretive.”

“He started disappearing at night.”

“He bought burner phones.”

“He stopped using our joint account.”

Sarah's hands shook.

“Then one night…”

She swallowed hard.

“I saw him talking to men carrying black briefcases.”

Emily asked.

“Was he involved in something illegal?”

Sarah nodded slowly.

“I think so.”

Then she reached into her purse.

And handed Nathan a photo.

Everyone froze.

It showed her husband standing beside several city officials.

Money changing hands.

Nathan frowned.

“This is serious.”

Sarah nodded.

“That's why he recorded everything.”

Nathan looked confused.

“Who?”

“My husband.”

“Wait…”

Nathan blinked.

“Your husband exposed himself?”

Sarah shook her head.

“No.”

“He wanted insurance.”

Everyone stared.

“He discovered people inside city government were stealing millions.”

She pointed toward the micro SD card.

“He recorded everything.”

Emily slowly realized.

“The evidence.”

Sarah nodded.

Then tears rolled down her face.

“Then they found out.”

The room went silent.

“Three days ago…”

“We ran.”

“Lily and I have been hiding ever since.”

Nathan stared at her.

“Why put the card in her mouth?”

Sarah looked ashamed.

“Because they search everything.”

“Phones.”

“Bags.”

“Cars.”

“But nobody would think to search chewing gum.”

Emily felt goosebumps.

Then Lily quietly spoke.

“Daddy said superheroes hide treasures.”

Sarah instantly burst into tears.

Emily felt her own eyes water.

“Where is your husband now?”

Sarah looked away.

Then whispered.

“I don't know.”

Suddenly…

BEEP.

BEEP.

BEEP.

Nathan's phone vibrated.

A hospital security alert.

He opened it.

Then his face instantly changed.

“Everyone stay inside.”

Emily looked at him.

“What happened?”

Nathan slowly turned the screen around.

A security camera image appeared.

Three men in black jackets had just entered the hospital.

One of them was holding Lily's school picture.

Sarah immediately stood up.

“Oh my God.”

Lily clutched her stuffed rabbit.

“Mommy?”

Sarah began shaking violently.

“They found us.”

Then one of the security officers ran into the room.

Out of breath.

“Doctor…”

He said.

“They're asking for a little girl named Lily Harper.”

The room froze.

Nathan immediately locked the door.

Emily pulled the blinds shut.

Sarah hugged Lily.

The little girl whispered.

“Are we in trouble?”

Sarah kissed her forehead.

“No baby.”

Then she looked at Nathan.

Terrified.

“Please…”

“Don't let them take her.”

At that exact moment…

Nathan inserted the micro SD card into his laptop.

The files opened instantly.

Video recordings.

Financial accounts.

Government names.

Hundreds of documents.

Then one final video automatically began playing.

The screen lit up.

Lily's father appeared.

His face bruised.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then he said seven words that stunned everyone.

May you like

“If you're seeing this… I'm already dead.”
