CHAPTER 2: THE VIDEO THAT EXPOSED AN ENTIRE CITY

The room became deathly silent.
Nobody breathed.
Nobody moved.
On Dr. Nathan Reed's laptop screen, Lily's father stared directly into the camera.
His face was bruised.
One eye was swollen shut.
His shirt was stained with dirt and blood.
Behind him sat an old storage room with exposed pipes and flickering fluorescent lights.
He looked exhausted.
Terrified.
And yet somehow determined.
“If you're seeing this… I'm already dead.”
Sarah immediately covered her mouth.
“Oh God…”
Lily looked up at her mother.
“Is Daddy on TV?”
Sarah couldn't answer.
The video continued.
“My name is Daniel Harper.”
“I'm a civil engineer for the City of Seattle.”
“My job was supposed to protect people.”
He swallowed hard.
“Instead, I discovered something that could destroy an entire city.”
Dr. Nathan leaned closer.
The screen changed.
Blueprints appeared.
Photos.
Contracts.
Payment records.
Daniel's voice continued.
“For three years, corrupt officials, developers, and contractors have been stealing money from public safety projects.”
Everyone stared.
Daniel zoomed into a bridge design.
“This bridge was approved using inferior materials.”
Another file appeared.
“The elementary school foundation was never properly reinforced.”
Another image.
“The hospital expansion project was built using counterfeit steel.”
Nurse Emily felt her stomach drop.
“This hospital?”
Daniel answered as if he could hear her.
“Yes.”
The exact hospital they were standing inside.
Sarah burst into tears.
“Oh my God…”
Daniel continued.
“If these projects fail…”
He paused.
“Thousands of people could die.”
The room went silent.
Lily hugged her stuffed rabbit tighter.
The video switched again.
Faces appeared.
Names.
Politicians.
Executives.
Contractors.
Then one image stayed on screen longer than the others.
Mayor Benjamin Wallace.
Everyone gasped.
Nathan blinked.
“No way.”
Daniel spoke.
“He is the head of everything.”
Suddenly loud footsteps echoed outside the consultation room.
Everyone froze.
BANG.
Someone hit the door.
Hospital security.
“Doctor!”
Nathan rushed over.
“What is it?”
The guard whispered urgently.
“The men are searching every floor.”
Sarah's body began shaking.
Lily crawled into her lap.
“Mommy…”
Sarah kissed her forehead.
“It's okay.”
But she wasn't okay.
Nathan immediately stood up.
“We need another plan.”
Emily nodded.
“The hospital isn't safe anymore.”
Then another knock came.
Three rapid knocks.
The security officer again.
“Doctor…”
“We have police downstairs.”
Sarah's face immediately turned white.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
“Not all of them are good.”
Nathan hesitated.
“How do you know?”
Sarah pointed toward the laptop.
“Daniel told me.”
The room grew silent.
Nathan looked conflicted.
Then Lily quietly said…
“My daddy said we only trust helpers.”
Everyone looked at her.
Such a simple sentence.
Yet suddenly it made perfect sense.
Nathan looked at Emily.
“We become the helpers.”
Emily nodded.
Immediately.
No hesitation.
Then Nathan pulled out his phone.
He called someone.
“Marcus?”
He spoke quietly.
“It's Nathan.”
Pause.
“I need your help.”
Marcus Chen had been Nathan's college roommate.
Now he was an investigative journalist known for exposing corruption.
“What's going on?”
Nathan answered.
“How do you feel about destroying a criminal empire?”
Thirty minutes later, Marcus arrived through a staff entrance.
He walked into the room carrying a camera bag.
“What did you get yourselves into?”
Then he saw Sarah.
Saw Lily.
Saw the files.
His expression instantly changed.
“Holy…”
Nathan turned the laptop toward him.
Marcus watched the video.
His face grew darker with every second.
Then he whispered.
“This is huge.”
“How huge?”
Marcus stared at Nathan.
“National news huge.”
Suddenly another file caught his attention.
“Wait.”
He clicked something.
An encrypted folder opened.
Sarah frowned.
“I've never seen that.”
Marcus entered a few commands.
The folder unlocked.
Everyone stared.
There were hundreds of additional files.
Bank transfers.
Secret payments.
Blackmail videos.
Then they discovered something horrifying.
A list.
A long list.
Missing witnesses.
Thirty-seven names.
Every single person who had attempted to expose the corruption.
Every single one.
Gone.
Sarah burst into tears again.
“Daniel…”
Marcus clicked another file.
One final recording opened.
This time Daniel sat beside a younger man.
Marcus suddenly froze.
“No way.”
Nathan looked at him.
“You know him?”
Marcus nodded slowly.
“That's Ethan Brooks.”
“Who is he?”
Marcus looked stunned.
“The mayor's son.”
Everyone gasped.
The video played.
Ethan looked terrified.
He stared directly into the camera.
“If anything happens to me…”
He swallowed hard.
“My father is responsible.”
Sarah stared in disbelief.
“The mayor's own son?”
Marcus nodded.
“He disappeared two months ago.”
Everyone had seen the headlines.
Missing philanthropist.
Searches suspended.
No evidence found.
Now they understood.
Then Lily suddenly pointed at the screen.
“That's him.”
Everyone froze.
“Who?”
Lily pointed again.
“The man from yesterday.”
Sarah immediately grabbed her hand.
“Lily.”
“What?”
“When did you see him?”
Lily thought for a moment.
“He was outside our motel.”
Sarah's face instantly lost all color.
“They're closer than we thought.”
Suddenly…
The lights flickered.
Once.
Twice.
Then everything went dark.
The room exploded with panic.
Emergency lights glowed red.
Hospital alarms began screaming.
BEEP.
BEEP.
BEEP.
Someone had triggered a power failure.
Nathan immediately stood.
“Everyone stay low.”
Footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Heavy footsteps.
Deliberate.
Getting closer.
Sarah held Lily tightly.
Emily grabbed a flashlight.
Marcus shut the laptop.
Then they heard voices.
“Search every room.”
The men had entered the floor.
Lily began trembling.
“Mommy…”
Sarah whispered.
“It's okay.”
But everyone knew it wasn't.
Nathan quietly opened another door.
A maintenance corridor.
“Move.”
Everyone hurried inside.
The group slipped through narrow hallways beneath the hospital.
Pipes lined the ceiling.
The air smelled like metal and dust.
Marcus whispered.
“Where are we going?”
Nathan answered.
“Parking garage.”
Suddenly…
Lily stopped walking.
Everyone turned.
“What's wrong?”
She pointed upward.
“Daddy said there would be another clue.”
Sarah frowned.
“What clue?”
Lily pointed toward her stuffed rabbit.
Everyone stared.
She squeezed its stomach.
CLICK.
Something fell onto the floor.
A key.
A tiny brass key.
Everyone froze.
Sarah gasped.
“Oh my God.”
She stared at Lily.
“He hid another secret.”
Nathan picked it up.
There was an engraving.
Locker 314.
Union Station.
Marcus immediately smiled.
“Oh…”
He looked at everyone.
“Daniel wasn't running.”
Everyone stared at him.
“He was preparing.”
Then Marcus looked at Sarah.
His eyes widening with realization.
“Your husband didn't just collect evidence.”
Silence.
“He built an insurance policy.”
Then he looked toward the dark tunnel ahead.
“Whatever is inside Locker 314…”
He smiled nervously.
“…is probably the thing they fear most.”
At that exact moment…
A gunshot echoed from above.
Everyone froze.
Then they heard one terrifying sentence through the hospital intercom.
Attention all personnel.
Turn over Lily Harper immediately.
May you like
Or people will start getting hurt.
