Chapter 3: The Gathering Storm

Chapter 3: The Gathering Storm
Within forty-eight hours, the Vance estate was turned into a fortress. Richard hired elite private security, suspecting that Elena’s 'accident' was far more sinister than the Swiss authorities had claimed.
Dr. Catherine Rowe, a leading neuropsychologist, spent hours with Elena. The diagnosis was retrograded amnesia caused by severe psychological trauma and physical head injury. "The memories are there," Dr. Rowe explained to Richard in the hallway. "They are locked behind a defensive wall. Seeing you and Leo has cracked that wall. The danger is that forcing the memories too quickly could cause severe psychological distress. Or worse, if she remembers something terrifying, it could trigger a fugue state."
"I just want my wife back, doctor," Richard sighed, rubbing his tired eyes. "But more than that, I need to know who did this to her."

Inside the room, Elena was looking through an old photo album Richard had given her. She saw pictures of herself laughing on a beach, holding a newborn Leo, and standing beside Richard at a grand opening. Suddenly, a specific photo caught her attention. It was a picture of a charity gala from five years ago. Standing next to her, smiling warmly, was Evelyn Thorne.
A sharp, stabbing pain pierced Elena’s temples. She gasped, dropping the album.
Images flashed in her mind: Evelyn standing in this very house, arguing with her. Evelyn saying, 'Richard deserves someone who can elevate his status, not a schoolteacher like you.' Then, a memory of Evelyn whispering into a phone in a dark hallway...
"Elena! What's wrong?" Richard rushed into the room, hearing her gasp.
"Evelyn..." Elena muttered, gripping Richard's arm. "She was here. Before I left for Switzerland. We fought. She told me... she told me you were having an affair with her and that I should leave."
Richard’s face contorted in shock. "What? That’s a lie! Evelyn was a family friend, a business associate. I never touched her. Elena, she told you that?"
"Yes," Elena cried, the memories rushing back like a broken dam. "I went to Switzerland to clear my head, to think about our marriage. She planted those doubts in my mind. She wanted me gone."
Before Richard could process this revelation, his phone rang. It was his chief of security. "Sir, we have a breach. The security feeds at the eastern perimeter just went dark. Someone is inside the grounds."

Richard’s blood ran cold. He locked the bedroom door immediately and drew a concealed firearm from his desk drawer. "Elena, get into the panic room behind the wardrobe. Take Leo. Now!"
Outside, the storm raged, rain lashing against the windows. The power suddenly cut out, plunging the entire estate into pitch blackness. Downstairs, the heavy glass doors of the patio shattered. Victor and three armed men entered the dark mansion, silenced pistols drawn. They weren't there to steal; they were there to silence the ghost that had risen from the grave.
