Chapter 4: Shadows in the Mansion

The silence inside the darkened Vance estate was suffocating, punctuated only by the distant rumbles of thunder. Inside the hidden panic room, Elena held Leo tightly against her chest. The little boy was trembling, sensing the mortal danger they were in.

"Stay quiet, my love," Elena whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs. "Daddy is going to protect us."

Outside the wardrobe, Richard stood in the shadows of the master bedroom, his breathing controlled, his gun raised. He knew every corner of this house. The intruders had the advantage of night-vision gear, but he had the home-field advantage.

A floorboard creaked in the hallway. Richard tracked the sound. A shadow silhouetted by the lightning outside slipped through the bedroom door. Richard didn't hesitate. He fired two shots. The intruder groaned, dropping to the floor as his weapon clattered away.

But before Richard could reposition, a flashbang grenade was tossed into the room.

The blinding light and deafening blast disoriented Richard, sending him crashing against the nightstand. His gun slipped from his hand. Through the ringing in his ears, he saw a tall figure step over him—Victor.

"Where is she, Vance?" Victor asked, his voice devoid of emotion, pointing a silenced pistol at Richard’s chest. "Tell me, and I’ll make your death quick. Evelyn only wants the wife gone, but you're becoming a massive liability."

"Evelyn... I knew it," Richard hissed, spitting blood from his lip. "She won't get away with this."

"She already has," Victor said, clicking the safety off.

Inside the panic room, Elena watched through the hidden one-way mirror. Seeing her husband on the floor with a gun pointed at his head triggered a final, violent explosion in her brain. The last remaining walls of her amnesia crumbled completely.

She remembered everything. She remembered Victor’s face—he was the man driving the black SUV that rammed her off the Swiss cliff. She remembered Evelyn paying him in the underground parking lot weeks before the accident.

The fear evaporated, replaced by a fierce, primal maternal rage. She looked around the panic room and grabbed a heavy steel emergency crowbar from the safety kit. She opened the hidden door silently, stepping out into the shadows behind Victor while he was distracted by Richard.

With all the strength born from four years of manual labor and a mother's desperation, Elena swung the crowbar.

CRACK.

The steel bar struck Victor squarely across the back of his knees. He collapsed with a scream of agony. Before he could raise his gun, Elena swung again, striking his wrist, sending his weapon flying across the room. Richard, recovering quickly, lunged forward and pinned Victor to the ground, knocking him unconscious with a heavy punch to the jaw.

The remaining intruders downstairs, hearing the commotion and realizing the police were likely en route via the automated silent alarm, fled into the night.

Richard stood up, panting, and looked at Elena. She stood there, holding the crowbar, her eyes fierce and fully present.

"I remember, Richard," she said, her voice steady and clear. "I remember everything. Evelyn tried to kill me. And it's time she pays for it."
