Chapter 6 - The True Ally

The fallout from Richard’s forced resignation hit the news cycle like a tidal wave the following morning. The Vance name was officially radioactive. But while the corporate world was busy dismantling their wealth, I had a more important meeting to attend—one that would decide the permanent future of my daughter's life.

I walked into Elena’s modest legal aid office on Mission Street. The walls were lined with metal filing cabinets, and the desk was buried under mountains of pro-bono case files. It was a stark contrast to the gleaming, mahogany-lined offices of Arthur Pendelton, but there was an integrity to the clutter that made me feel instantly at ease.

"Good morning, Chloe," Elena said, looking up from her computer with a warm, genuine smile. She reached into her drawer and pulled out a fresh box of crayons and a coloring book, handing them to Lily, who smiled and ran over to a small kid's table in the corner of the room.

"We have a major update from the family law division," Elena said, inviting me to sit down across from her. She pulled a freshly signed order from her file. "Evan’s legal team tried to file an emergency motion for supervised visitation rights through a third-party social service agency. They argued that depriving him of access to his child during a criminal investigation was causing him severe emotional distress."

I felt a cold dread ripple through my stomach. "Did the judge grant it?"

"Not a chance," Elena said, a triumphant flash appearing in her dark eyes. "I filed a cross-motion containing the full psychiatric evaluation from the hospital's trauma team, along with the transcript of the emergency response call. The family court judge didn't just deny his motion; she converted our temporary restraining order into a Permanent Sole Legal and Physical Custody Decree."

She slid the document across the desk toward me. I looked down at the official state seal, my eyes tracking the words: Full Care, Custody, and Control awarded exclusively to the Mother, Chloe Vance.

"It's over," I whispered, a tear of pure, unadulterated relief falling onto the page. "He can't touch her. He can't take her for weekends anymore. He can't let his mother near her."

"He is completely out of the picture, Chloe," Elena confirmed softly, reaching across the desk to squeeze my hand. "Furthermore, because Evan was fired from his father's firm, the court has ordered a comprehensive asset audit. Even if he tries to hide his personal investments in offshore accounts or family trusts, the court-appointed receiver is going to strip his liquid assets to ensure Lily’s long-term medical and psychological care is fully funded. He’s going to be paying child support based on his historical earning potential, not his current unemployment status. He’s financially trapped."

I looked over at Lily, who was carefully coloring a picture of a butterfly, using her silicone-wrapped fingers with increasing confidence. The sight of her beautiful, resilient spirit brought a wave of fierce pride over me.

"How is Janice's criminal case looking?" I asked, turning back to Elena.

"The District Attorney isn't offering a plea deal," Elena said flatly. "They’re pushing for the maximum sentence of eight years in a state penitentiary for felony child abuse with malicious intent to cause great bodily injury. Arthur Pendelton tried to argue that her age and health should mitigate the sentence, but the DA countered with the fact that she actively locked a seven-year-old child in a bathroom and refused to provide medical attention. She’s going to trial, Chloe. And with the evidence we have, she’s going to lose."

I stood up from the chair, feeling a sense of strength I hadn't possessed in years. The Vances had thought they could use their wealth to treat us like an disposable footnote in their family history. But they had underestimated the sheer, unbreakable power of a mother’s love.

"Thank you, Elena," I said honestly. "You didn't just save my daughter. You saved me."

"You saved yourselves, Chloe," Elena said, her eyes shining. "You were the one who drove back to that house. You were the one who stood up to them when they tried to make it small. I just provided the paperwork."
