Chapter 8 - The Judgment of Truth

The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity for the final day of the trial. The jury box was filled with twelve ordinary citizens—teachers, transit workers, nurses, and small business owners—people who didn't care about the Vance name or the size of their country club donations.

Janice sat at the defense table, her posture rigid, her eyes fixed on the mahogany surface in front of her. Beside her, Arthur Pendelton looked exhausted, his usual confident demeanor entirely depleted after three days of devastating testimony from medical experts, child welfare specialists, and his own client’s son.

The judge called for order, and the jury foreman stood up, a serious, middle-aged woman holding a single sheet of paper.

"In the matter of the People of the State of California versus Janice Vance, on Count One, Aggravated Child Abuse on a Minor under the age of eight, how do you find?"

"We find the defendant, Janice Vance, Guilty," the foreman announced clearly.

A low, collective murmur passed through the gallery. Janice didn't flinch. She simply closed her eyes, her pale face turning an even deeper shade of ash-grey as her final illusion of immunity evaporated.

"On Count Two, Assault with a Deadly Weapon with Intent to Cause Great Bodily Injury, how do you find?"

"We find the defendant, Janice Vance, Guilty," the foreman repeated.

Judge Vance nodded slowly, turning her fierce, unyielding gaze down toward the defense table. "Mrs. Vance, stand up."

Janice rose slowly, her movements stiff and robotic.

"The jury has found you guilty of crimes that fracture the very foundation of human decency," Judge Vance said, her voice echoing through the silent courtroom like a divine decree. "You used your wealth, your status, and your position of authority to inflict severe, calculated physical pain on a defenseless seven-year-old child who trusted you. And worse, you attempted to use that same wealth to insulate yourself from the consequences of your cruelty. This court will not tolerate the abuse of children, regardless of the tax bracket of the perpetrator."

She picked up her pen, signing the sentencing order with a sharp, definitive stroke.

"I sentence you to seven years in the California Institution for Women, with zero possibility of early parole before serving eighty-five percent of the term. Furthermore, you are ordered to pay a criminal restitution fine of five hundred thousand dollars to fund the long-term medical and psychological rehabilitation of the victim. Bailiffs, remand the defendant into immediate custody."

The sound of the handcuffs clicking around Janice’s wrists was the loudest sound in the room. As she was guided out through the side door toward the corrections transport, she didn't look at the media, she didn't look at her expensive lawyer, and she didn't look at her sobbing son in the front row. She looked at me.

And for the first time in my life, I looked back at her and felt absolutely nothing but peace. The monster had been stripped of her teeth, and her perfect house was officially empty.
