Chapter 4 - The Price of Protection

The SUV didn't take me back to my Pilsen apartment. Instead, it navigated north, crossing the river into the exclusive, gated enclave of Lincoln Park. The streets here were lined with massive, historic stone mansions hidden behind wrought-iron fences and mature oak trees.

"Where are we going?" I asked, panic flaring up in my throat again as the vehicle pulled up to a grand, dark brick estate with tinted security lights illuminating the manicured lawn. "This isn't my neighborhood."

"Your neighborhood is no longer safe for you, Emma," Matteo said, opening his door as the security gates swung closed behind us. "Marcus Vance is a coward, but Alberto Rossi is not. By six o'clock this morning, Rossi’s internal security will realize their port codes have been compromised. They will track the leak back to Marcus’s terminal, and they will discover that you were in his apartment tonight with me."

He stepped out into the cold morning air and looked back at me. "If you go back to Pilsen, you and your daughter will become leverage for a man who uses a meat cleaver to settle his accounts. You stay here. Until I say otherwise."

I sat in the leather seat, the reality of my situation tightening around my neck like a noose. I had escaped the crushing poverty of my old life, but I had walked straight into a golden cage managed by the most feared man in Chicago.

"And Lily?" I asked, my voice breaking as I stepped out of the vehicle, still wrapped in his coat. "My mother? I can't leave them out there."

"My men are already extracting your mother and daughter," Matteo said, leading me up the stone steps of the mansion. "They will be brought here before dawn. They will be safe, Emma. You have my word."

The interior of the Valentino estate was breathtaking—a masterclass in Old World European luxury combined with modern security architecture. The floors were polished white marble, the high ceilings featured dark timber beams, and the walls were lined with original oil paintings. But every window was made of reinforced ballistic glass, and silent, armed men moved through the corridors with the efficiency of military ghosts.

Matteo led me into a grand library on the first floor. A massive limestone fireplace was already crackling with a roaring wood fire, casting a warm amber glow over the leather armchairs and thousands of gold-leaf books.

"Sit down," Matteo said, walking over to a crystal decanter on the sideboard. He poured two fingers of dark amber liquid into a heavy glass and walked back, handing it to me. "Drink this. Your hands are still shaking."

I took the glass, the crystal cold against my fingers. I took a small sip. It tasted like smoke and honey, burning a warm path down my throat and finally stopping the tremors in my chest.

Matteo stood by the hearth, his arms crossed over his chest, his gray eyes watching me through the shadows.

"You’re a civilian, Emma," he said quietly. "You don't belong in this world. You’re a mother who works a double shift at a greasy diner to buy groceries for her child. Why did you keep my card?"

"Because when you gave it to me," I whispered, looking down at the amber liquid in my glass, "you looked at me like... like you actually saw me. Not just a waitress who forgot the extra napkins or a woman who couldn't afford a better pair of shoes. You looked at me like I was a person. And when you're as poor as I am, Mr. Valentino, people stop looking at you a long time ago."

Matteo was silent for a long time. The only sound in the room was the rhythmic crackle of the fireplace.

"My name is Matteo," he said softly, the harsh edge of his voice dropping for the first time since he had entered my apartment. "And from this moment on, nobody in this city will ever look past you again."

Before I could answer, the heavy double doors of the library swung open. The scarred driver stepped into the room, holding his diagnostic tablet, his face grim.

"Boss," the driver said, his voice tight. "We’ve got a problem. Alberto Rossi just issued an emergency mobilization order to his crews. They aren't waiting for sunrise. They’ve already hit Marcus’s loft, and they’ve deployed a team to the Pilsen terminal. They know everything."
