Chapter 8 - The Contract of the New Dawn

The grandfather clock in the library of the Valentino estate struck 8:00 AM when the heavy front doors finally opened.

I had spent the last two hours sitting on the sofa, Lily asleep with her head in my lap, her long lashes casting soft shadows across her cheeks. My mother was sitting in the armchair across from me, sipping a cup of hot tea the house staff had brought her, her face finally losing its gray tinge of terror.

Matteo walked into the library. He had taken off his long black coat, wearing only his pristine white button-down shirt and his dark trousers. He looked exhausted—the sharp lines of his face shadowed with a light layer of stubble, his gray eyes rimmed with red—but his posture remained unshakeable, straight, and entirely commanding.

He stopped by the edge of the rug, his eyes immediately tracking down to Lily’s sleeping form in my lap. The fierce, terrifying predator I had seen in my apartment three hours ago was gone, replaced by a man who looked... complete.

"Is she alright?" Matteo asked, his voice a low whisper so he wouldn't wake her.

"She’s fine," I whispered back, my eyes shining with a deep, profound gratitude that no words could ever properly carry. "She slept the whole way here. Matteo... thank you. Thank you for saving her."

Matteo walked over to his large mahogany desk, opened a leather portfolio, and pulled out a single sheet of heavy, cream-colored parchment paper. He walked back to the sofa and placed it gently on the table in front of me.

"What is this?" I asked, looking down at the elegant typography.

"It’s a property deed, Emma," Matteo said softly, sitting in the armchair next to my mother. "The land trust of the Pilsen neighborhood—the three blocks surrounding your old apartment building—has been formally acquired by a private foundation. The apartment building you live in is being completely renovated starting Monday morning. The families who live there will own their units, rent-free, for the next ninety-nine years. And the title for the corner property—the historic townhouse overlooking the park—is registered under your name."

I stared at him, my breath catching in my throat. "Matteo... I can't accept this. The fifty thousand dollars from Marcus is already more than I ever dreamed of. This... this is too much."

"It’s not a gift, Emma," Matteo said, his gray eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart give a strange, erratic thud. "It’s an investment. I run an organization that requires absolute loyalty, absolute security, and absolute trust. Tonight, you showed me that when the world tries to crush you, you don't break. You stay steady. You protect your child. That is the kind of character I need in my world."

He reached across the table, his long, warm fingers gently covering my hand—the hand that was no longer holding a gun, but holding my sleeping daughter.

"The diner is finished, Emma," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a soft, velvety baritone that sent a wave of warmth rushing through my chest. "From this morning on, you are the managing director of the Valentino Community Foundation. You will have a real office, a real salary, and a life where you never have to work a double shift under fluorescent lights again. Your daughter will have the best schools, the best doctors, and a name that means nobody in this city will ever dare to threaten her again."

I looked at him, then down at Lily, then at my mother, who was smiling through her tears. The long, brutal winters of my twenty-eight years seemed to melt away in that moment, replaced by the brilliant, golden light of the November sun as it finally cleared the high windows of the library, filling the room with warmth.

"And what do you want from me, Matteo?" I asked, my voice trembling with a mixture of fear and a beautiful, rising hope.

May you like

Matteo’s mouth softened into a genuine, breathtaking smile—the first real smile I had seen on his face.

"I just want you to let me look at you, Emma," he whispered, his thumb gently smoothing over the back of my hand. "For the rest of our lives."
