Chapter 3 The Secret Hidden Beneath the Serpent Crown

The leather journal felt impossibly heavy in Enzo's hands.

Not because of its weight.

Because of what it represented.

Nathan had known.

For nearly four years, his younger brother had carried a secret so dangerous that people were still killing to bury it.

Around him, the ruined hallway looked like the aftermath of a war.

Marble columns were chipped by bullets.

Crystal chandeliers lay shattered across the floor.

Blood ran through the grooves between polished stone tiles.

The elderly woman who had called herself Eleanor Whitcomb lay motionless only a few feet away, her elegant black dress slowly turning crimson.

Enzo knelt beside her.

No pulse.

No breath.

She had survived years in hiding only to be murdered seconds after revealing the truth.

He closed her eyes.

"I'll finish what you started."

His radio crackled violently.

"Boss!"

Vincent's voice.

"They found the tunnel!"

"We've got six shooters closing in!"

Enzo grabbed the journal and sprinted toward the hidden passage.

Behind him, another explosion rocked the mansion.

The ceiling trembled.

Dust rained from the ornate plaster.

Someone was trying to bring the entire estate down.

Beneath the Mansion

Harper sat on an old wooden crate inside the underground tunnel, wrapped in Enzo's tuxedo jacket.

Her breathing remained uneven.

Every distant gunshot made her shoulders tense.

Vincent stood near the steel door with an assault rifle resting against his shoulder.

He watched Harper carefully.

Not like a hostage.

Like someone trying to understand a mystery.

Finally, he spoke.

"How old were you?"

Harper looked up.

"When?"

"The first scar."

Silence.

She stared at the concrete floor.

"I was six."

Vincent swallowed.

"My God."

She rubbed her trembling fingers together.

"I broke one of Father's watches."

"It belonged to my grandfather."

"I didn't mean to."

"He said expensive things deserved expensive lessons."

Vincent's jaw tightened.

"He used the belt?"

She nodded once.

"My mother begged him to stop."

"Did she?"

"For that day."

She smiled sadly.

"It only made him angry."

Vincent had grown up among mobsters.

He had seen fathers teach sons to shoot before they could drive.

He had seen violence.

Cruelty.

Execution.

But there was something about the quiet way Harper spoke that disturbed him far more than any crime scene.

She wasn't telling a horror story.

She was describing childhood.

A hidden door slid open.

Enzo entered.

Covered in dust.

Blood stained one sleeve of his white dress shirt.

Harper immediately stood.

"You're hurt."

"It's not mine."

She looked relieved.

Then embarrassed for asking.

Enzo handed Vincent the journal.

"Read."

Vincent opened the first page.

Nathan's handwriting covered nearly every inch.

If anyone finds this...

Harper Whitcomb is innocent.

Everything we've been told about Preston Whitcomb is only half the truth.

Someone else controls him.

Vincent frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Enzo kept turning pages.

Nathan had documented meetings.

Photographs.

Financial transfers.

Dates.

Names.

Each entry pointed toward the same mysterious organization.

The Circle.

Harper stared at one photograph.

Her face lost all color.

"No..."

Enzo noticed immediately.

"You know him."

She nodded.

Barely.

The man in the picture wore a charcoal-gray overcoat and silver gloves.

Late fifties.

Sharp blue eyes.

Calm smile.

Harper whispered one name.

"Gabriel."

Enzo looked at her.

"Who's Gabriel?"

She closed the journal.

Very gently.

"As a child..."

"...I wasn't allowed to speak during Father's business meetings."

"But sometimes..."

"...Gabriel visited."

She shivered.

"Father was afraid of him."

The sentence stunned both men.

Preston Whitcomb.

The billionaire who controlled politicians.

Who bribed judges.

Who had ordered murders.

Afraid?

Of one man?

Harper nodded.

"When Gabriel arrived..."

"...Father always stood."

"He never looked him in the eyes."

"He called him..."

"...Sir."

Enzo exchanged a glance with Vincent.

That changed everything.

Nathan's journal contained another photograph.

This time...

Gabriel stood beside Nathan.

They appeared to be arguing.

The picture had clearly been taken from long distance.

Across the bottom, Nathan had written:

He offered me money.

When I refused...

He smiled.

Another page.

Another note.

Preston doesn't make the decisions.

He's only collecting money.

Gabriel owns everyone.

Enzo quietly closed the journal.

"So Preston wasn't at the top."

Vincent answered.

"No."

"He was another puppet."

Harper suddenly grabbed her head.

A sharp pain exploded behind her eyes.

Images flashed through her mind.

A basement.

A locked red door.

Her mother's voice.

A silver necklace.

Gabriel smiling.

Then...

Blood.

She gasped.

Enzo caught her before she collapsed.

"What happened?"

"I remembered."

"What?"

"My mother."

Her breathing became frantic.

"She didn't die in a car accident."

Enzo frowned.

"Everyone said—"

"They lied."

Tears rolled down Harper's face.

"I saw it."

"I was hiding."

"There was shouting."

"My mother wanted to leave."

"She told Father she was taking me away."

Her voice cracked.

"Gabriel was there."

The tunnel became completely silent.

"He told Father..."

"'You may divorce your wife.'"

"'But the child belongs to us.'"

Enzo felt ice crawl down his spine.

"Us?"

Harper nodded.

"The Circle."

Before anyone could ask another question...

A cell phone vibrated.

Vincent looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

He answered anyway.

"Talk."

The voice on the other end was calm.

Elegant.

Almost friendly.

"Good evening."

"My name is Gabriel Ashcroft."

Harper froze.

Enzo took the phone.

"You've caused enough trouble."

Gabriel chuckled softly.

"I disagree."

"I've solved one mystery."

Enzo's grip tightened.

"What do you want?"

"I want Harper."

"No."

"I wasn't asking."

Gabriel's voice remained perfectly calm.

"Mr. DeLuca..."

"Did Nathan ever tell you why he really died?"

Enzo said nothing.

"He died because he chose love over loyalty."

A long silence followed.

Gabriel continued.

"He tried to rescue Harper."

"He almost succeeded."

Harper covered her mouth.

"No..."

Gabriel heard her.

"Hello, Harper."

She couldn't speak.

"I imagine you've remembered your mother."

Fresh tears spilled down her face.

"You killed her."

"No."

"I simply allowed your father to."

Enzo's eyes darkened.

"If you touch her—"

Gabriel interrupted.

"I already have."

The line went quiet.

Then Gabriel spoke one final sentence.

"The necklace around Harper's neck..."

"...does she know what's inside?"

Harper instinctively reached beneath Enzo's jacket.

Hidden against her skin...

Hung a tiny silver locket.

The same necklace her mother had given her.

She had worn it every day since childhood.

Never opening it.

Never questioning why.

Gabriel laughed softly.

"Open it."

The call disconnected.

No one moved.

Harper stared at the necklace.

"I can't."

"My mother said never."

Enzo gently held out his hand.

"Maybe..."

"...she meant never until now."

With trembling fingers...

Harper unclasped the chain.

The tiny silver locket looked ordinary.

Except...

There was no place for a photograph.

Instead...

A microscopic keyhole.

Vincent searched through Eleanor's belongings.

"There."

A tiny brass key hung inside her necklace.

The same size.

He handed it to Harper.

Her hands shook so violently she almost dropped it.

The key slid into place.

Click.

The locket slowly opened.

Inside...

There wasn't a picture.

There wasn't jewelry.

There wasn't money.

Only a folded strip of yellowed paper.

Harper carefully unfolded it.

A birth certificate.

But not hers.

At the top—

The name read:

Isabella Ashcroft

Date of Birth:

Twenty-six years earlier.

Mother:

Emily Whitcomb.

Father:

Gabriel Ashcroft.

Harper frowned.

"I don't understand."

Then she turned the page over.

A second certificate had been hidden beneath the first.

Her hands stopped shaking.

Her heart stopped instead.

The second document read:

Harper Ashcroft

Mother:

Emily Whitcomb.

Father:

Gabriel Ashcroft.

Not Preston Whitcomb.

Gabriel Ashcroft.

The tunnel fell into absolute silence.

Vincent whispered,

"My God..."

Enzo slowly looked at Harper.

The terrified woman he had married to punish Preston Whitcomb...

Wasn't Preston's daughter at all.

She was Gabriel Ashcroft's biological child.

Which meant—

The man hunting her tonight wasn't trying to eliminate a witness.

He was trying to reclaim his own daughter before the truth destroyed everything.

Harper looked up at Enzo, tears streaming down her face.

In a broken whisper, she asked the only question that mattered.

"If Preston wasn't my father..."

"...then why did he spend twenty years pretending to hate me?"

Before anyone could answer—

A distant voice echoed through the tunnel speakers.

Calm.

Cultured.

Terrifying.

"Because, my dear..."

May you like

"...raising you was the price he paid for betraying me."

The lights suddenly went black.
