Chapter 5 Blood Never Chose Family

The first bullet shattered the steel cabinet inches above Harper's head.

Folders exploded into the air.

Thousands of confidential documents—blackmail files, bank records, secret contracts, DNA reports—whirled through the underground archive like a blizzard of paper.

Gunfire thundered from every direction.

Enzo pulled Harper to the ground just as another burst ripped through the space where she had been standing.

Concrete splintered.

Steel screamed.

The smell of gunpowder filled the chamber.

Vincent rolled behind an overturned cabinet, firing controlled bursts toward Gabriel's advancing men.

"They've got body armor!"

Enzo answered without looking.

"Headshots."

Gabriel Ashcroft never flinched.

His expensive charcoal overcoat remained spotless despite the chaos around him.

His operatives formed a protective wall while he watched Harper with unsettling calm.

Like a father waiting for a stubborn child to stop running.

"You disappoint me," Gabriel said.

His voice somehow carried through the gunfire.

"I spent twenty-six years protecting your future."

Harper stared at him in disbelief.

"Protecting me?"

"You tortured my mother."

"You murdered Nathan."

"You destroyed everyone I ever loved."

Gabriel sighed.

"They made choices."

"I merely accepted the consequences."

Another wave of gunmen rushed forward.

Enzo fired twice.

One fell instantly.

Another spun backward as Vincent's bullet struck beneath his helmet.

The remaining men pressed forward without hesitation.

Professional.

Disciplined.

Not criminals.

Soldiers.

Enzo grabbed Harper's hand.

"Move!"

They sprinted between towering rows of filing cabinets as bullets ripped through metal behind them.

Entire drawers burst open.

Decades of hidden secrets scattered across the floor.

Harper nearly slipped on loose documents before Enzo caught her.

"You okay?"

She nodded.

"I've had worse."

The answer broke something inside him.

She said it so casually.

As though surviving horror had become ordinary.

Suddenly—

A loud mechanical alarm echoed through the archive.

Red warning lights began flashing.

Vincent looked toward the ceiling.

"They're flooding the lower levels."

Enzo frowned.

"What?"

Gabriel smiled.

"This archive exists beneath Lake Michigan's emergency reservoir."

He adjusted one silver glove.

"In twelve minutes..."

"...everything down here will disappear."

Water began pouring through narrow vents high in the walls.

Not much.

At first.

Just enough to wet the floor.

Then another vent opened.

Then another.

Within seconds, icy water rushed across the concrete.

"They're drowning us," Vincent growled.

Gabriel corrected him.

"No."

"I'm erasing evidence."

Enzo scanned the chamber.

There had to be another exit.

Nathan would never have entered this place without planning an escape.

He looked toward the old architectural drawings hanging beside one wall.

Emergency evacuation shaft.

North corridor.

Seventy meters.

"There!"

They ran.

Gabriel watched without moving.

He simply raised one finger.

Half his men pursued.

The other half remained beside him.

Almost as if...

He already knew where Enzo was going.

The freezing water climbed past Harper's ankles.

Then her knees.

The current grew stronger.

Loose cabinets began tipping over.

One enormous shelf crashed sideways.

Enzo shoved Harper forward just before two tons of steel slammed into the flooded floor behind them.

"You knew this place!" Vincent shouted.

Gabriel answered calmly.

"I built it."

The corridor narrowed.

Water surged faster.

Emergency lights flickered overhead.

Harper struggled to keep pace.

Her soaked wedding gown dragged heavily behind her.

The lace caught on exposed metal.

She stumbled.

Enzo immediately stopped.

He tore away the remaining shredded fabric with both hands.

The elegant wedding dress that had symbolized revenge finally fell apart completely.

Harper stood wearing only the simple white silk slip beneath it.

The scars across her back were fully visible now.

Neither of them noticed.

Neither cared.

"Hurry!"

Vincent covered the rear as enemy gunfire echoed through the tunnel.

The water reached their waists.

Movement became painfully slow.

Suddenly—

Harper froze.

She had seen something floating beside one of the overturned cabinets.

A photograph.

Old.

Water-damaged.

She reached for it.

Enzo almost pulled her away.

Then he saw her expression.

It was her mother.

Emily.

Holding a little girl.

No older than three.

Harper.

Behind them stood Preston Whitcomb.

Smiling.

Actually smiling.

Not cruel.

Not angry.

Just...

Happy.

Written across the back in faded ink:

Our first Christmas together.

Maybe one day she'll believe we loved her enough to lie.

— Preston

Harper burst into tears.

"He..."

"...he really loved me."

Enzo squeezed her hand.

"Yes."

"I think he did."

The realization shattered decades of hatred.

Preston had beaten her.

Humiliated her.

Raised her inside fear.

Yet every monstrous act had been part of an impossible bargain.

Keep Gabriel convinced.

Or lose Harper forever.

Harper whispered,

"I hated him."

Enzo looked at her gently.

"He probably prayed you would."

A violent explosion interrupted the moment.

The tunnel ceiling cracked.

Chunks of concrete crashed into the rising water.

Vincent shouted,

"Run!"

They reached the emergency shaft.

A vertical steel ladder climbed nearly sixty feet upward.

Enzo tested it.

Still solid.

"I'll go first."

"No."

Harper stopped him.

"You cover us."

"I'll climb."

Enzo hesitated.

She smiled weakly.

"I've spent my whole life climbing out of places people locked me inside."

She began ascending.

Vincent followed beneath her.

Enzo remained at the bottom, firing toward the approaching soldiers.

One by one, Gabriel's operatives entered the corridor.

None survived the bottleneck.

The narrow passage neutralized their numbers.

Then...

Gabriel himself appeared.

Standing calmly in the rising water.

Still untouched.

Still composed.

He looked up at Harper climbing away.

"You inherited Emily's stubbornness."

Harper didn't stop.

"You inherited your mother's courage too."

She kept climbing.

Gabriel sighed.

Then quietly pulled a small remote from his pocket.

Enzo saw it immediately.

"What is that?"

Gabriel looked almost regretful.

"The final lock."

He pressed the button.

Somewhere deep beneath the archive—

Massive steel doors slammed shut.

The emergency shaft suddenly shook violently.

Vincent grabbed the ladder.

"What happened?"

Enzo understood instantly.

"They're collapsing the shaft!"

The entire structure groaned.

Bolts snapped.

Concrete fractured.

Harper looked down.

The ladder had begun separating from the wall.

"Jump!"

Enzo shouted.

"What?"

"Jump!"

She was still nearly twenty feet above him.

Without another second to think—

Harper let go.

She fell.

Straight toward Enzo.

He caught her with every ounce of strength he possessed.

The impact drove both of them underwater.

Pain exploded through his shoulder.

But he never released her.

The ladder tore free.

It crashed into the flooded tunnel behind them.

Their only escape...

Gone.

Gabriel slowly approached.

Only fifteen feet away now.

His men surrounded the corridor.

Weapons lowered.

No hurry.

There was nowhere left to run.

Harper slowly stood.

She looked at Gabriel.

Then at Enzo.

Then back again.

Finally...

She stepped forward.

Enzo grabbed her wrist.

"No."

She smiled sadly.

"If I go..."

"...he'll let you live."

Gabriel nodded.

"I will."

Enzo laughed bitterly.

"He's lying."

Gabriel didn't deny it.

Harper gently touched Enzo's face.

"You've spent your whole life trying to avenge your brother."

"You don't have to die because of me."

Enzo took both of her hands.

"For the first time since Nathan died..."

"...I'm fighting for someone who's still alive."

His voice shook.

"I'm not losing you too."

Harper's eyes filled with tears.

Neither of them had spoken the words.

Neither needed to.

Gabriel watched the exchange with quiet disappointment.

"So..."

"You've fallen in love."

Enzo answered first.

"Yes."

Gabriel closed his eyes.

For the first time...

Real emotion crossed his face.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Sorrow.

"When people choose love..."

"...they become predictable."

He slowly raised his hand.

Every rifle lifted.

Safety switches clicked off.

Harper stepped in front of Enzo.

Enzo stepped in front of Harper.

Neither would move.

Gabriel whispered one final command.

"Fire."

At that exact instant—

A deafening explosion erupted from somewhere above the tunnel.

The ceiling collapsed.

A torrent of freezing water burst through the concrete with unimaginable force.

The entire underground chamber began to cave in.

Walls cracked.

Steel twisted.

The flood swallowed soldiers, weapons, and filing cabinets alike.

Gabriel looked upward for the first time.

His calm expression finally broke.

Someone else...

Had triggered the collapse.

May you like

And whoever it was...

Had just changed the war forever.
