Chapter 3 - The Threat of Ruin

The corporate world of New York did not slow down for Adrian Whitmore’s personal crises. By Friday morning, his desk was flooded with dossiers regarding the Devonshire Logistics merger, but his eyes kept returning to a smaller, red folder marked Mercer Blooms: Financial Assets.

Adrian had spent the last forty-eight hours executing his threat. He had bought the underlying commercial mortgage for the block of buildings Theo Mercer’s shop occupied in Williamsburg. With one stroke of a pen, Adrian was now Theo’s landlord. And he had already instructed his legal team to draft a notice of immediate lease termination based on a obscure zoning loophole from 1984.

He was going to crush him. Not because Theo was a real threat to his empire, but because Adrian needed to prove to himself that his rules still applied. Money wins. Power wins. Love is just a fairy tale told by people who can't afford the reality.

The door to his office swung open without a knock.

Lily stepped in, her eyes red from crying, holding her phone out like a weapon. "What did you do?" she demanded, her voice cracking. "Adrian, what did you do to Claire?"

Adrian didn't look up from his papers. "I haven't done anything to Claire. She is currently executing her duties downstairs."

"She just handed in her two-week notice!" Lily shouted, slamming her palms onto his desk. "She’s leaving, Adrian! Because of you! She wouldn't tell me why, but I know it’s because you destroyed her flowers and did whatever horrible, soul-crushing things you always do to people who don't deserve it."

Adrian’s heart did something strange. It felt like it missed a beat, then slammed against his ribs with terrifying force. She’s leaving. The words didn't make sense. Claire didn't leave. She was part of the house. She was the one constant in his chaotic, brutal life.

"She is an employee," Adrian said, his voice entirely devoid of emotion, though his hands were shaking beneath the desk. "If she wishes to seek employment elsewhere, that is her prerogative."

"You're a liar," Lily whispered, her eyes full of disgust. "You're a pathetic, empty suit. She was the only person in this house who actually cared if you ate, Adrian. She was the only one who stayed up when you had those silent panic attacks in the middle of the night after the anniversary of Mom’s death. You think nobody knows, but she was always there, leaving tea outside your door, making sure the halls were quiet. And you just drove her away."

Lily turned and stormed out, leaving the door wide open.

Adrian sat completely still. The silence in the office was suddenly deafening. She stayed up for me. He hadn't known. He had always assumed the servants handled his late-night requirements on a rotating shift. He had never realized it was always her.

Before he could process the thought, his desk phone buzzed. It was the security gate.

"Mr. Whitmore," the guard's voice came through, sounding tense. "We have a situation. Mr. Theo Mercer is at the front gate. He didn't bring a truck this time, sir. He’s on foot, and he says he’s not leaving until he speaks to you. He says it's about the Williamsburg lease."

Adrian’s face hardened into a mask of pure steel. "Let him up. Bring him directly to my office."

Ten minutes later, Theo Mercer walked into the room. He didn't look defeated. He looked furious. He walked straight up to Adrian’s desk and threw a crumpled piece of paper onto the blotter. It was the eviction notice.

"You really are as small as they say, aren't you?" Theo said, his voice vibrating with anger. "You couldn't win her respect, so you decided to destroy my livelihood. You think this makes you powerful?"

Adrian stood up, drawing himself up to his full, imposing height. "It’s business, Mr. Mercer. I told you what would happen if you disrupted my household. You chose to ignore the warning. Now, your business is gone, and Claire has resigned. You both lose."

"Is that what you think this is? A game of wins and losses?" Theo stepped closer, his fists clenched at his sides. "Claire didn't resign because of me, Adrian. She resigned because she found out what you did to my building. She came to my shop this morning, crying, apologizing for bringing your darkness into my life. She broke her own heart to save my business. She promised me she would never see me again if it meant you would leave my shop alone."

Adrian froze. She resigned to protect him.

"She loves this city, and she loves her independence," Theo said, his voice dropping into a harsh whisper. "And she was willing to throw it all away, to disappear to some small town upstate, just so you wouldn't crush a stranger. That is what love is, Adrian. It’s sacrifice. It’s putting someone else’s life ahead of your own ego. But you wouldn't know anything about that. You just sit up here in your glass tower, buying things you hate to punish people you envy."
