Chapter 5 - The Gala of Mirrors

Two weeks passed under a tense, fragile peace. True to his word, Adrian had signed a ten-year, rent-free lease for Theo Mercer, and Claire had returned to her quiet, ghostly routine. But the distance between them had grown into an abyss. They spoke only when necessary, their eyes never lingering, their words clipped and professional.

Then came the annual Metropolitan Winter Gala—the most prestigious event on the New York social calendar, hosted this year at the Whitmore Museum of Fine Arts. It was an event designed for Adrian to display his dominance over the business world, and he had expected it to be like every other year: tedious, expensive, and entirely predictable.

He arrived in a flawless black tuxedo, his sister Lily on his arm, looking radiant in emerald silk. The grand ballroom was a sea of diamonds, champagne, and high-stakes gossip.

But as Adrian moved through the crowd, shaking hands with governors and CEOs, his eyes caught a figure standing near the grand ice sculpture at the center of the room.

It was Claire.

She wasn't wearing her uniform. She was wearing a simple but stunning midnight-blue gown that draped over her shoulders like liquid starlight. Her hair was swept up, exposing the elegant line of her neck, and she was talking softly to one of the museum curators. She had been asked to oversee the logistics of the event’s high-profile charity auction, a task she executed with the same flawless precision she used at the manor.

Adrian stopped mid-sentence during a conversation with a prominent tech investor. He couldn't take his eyes off her. She looked like she belonged there, beneath the crystal chandeliers, far more than the superficial heiresses who were currently trying to catch his eye.

"She looks beautiful, doesn't she?" Lily said softly, appearing at his side with a glass of champagne.

"She looks appropriate for the venue," Adrian said automatically, his corporate defense mechanisms kicking in.

"Oh, stop it, Adrian," Lily sighed, looking at him with deep pity. "You're staring at her like she's the only glass of water in a desert. Just go talk to her. For once in your life, act like a human being instead of a stock ticker."

Before Adrian could respond, a commotion near the entrance drew the crowd's attention.

Julian Vance had arrived.

Julian was Adrian’s fiercest rival in the real estate market—a younger, louder billionaire who loved old money prestige and took every opportunity to poke at the Whitmore empire. He walked into the ballroom with a smug, golden-boy smile, surrounded by an entourage of reporters.

Julian’s eyes immediately scanned the room and locked onto Adrian. But he didn't walk toward Adrian. He walked straight toward Claire.

Adrian’s grip on his champagne flute tightened until the crystal groaned under the pressure.

"Ah, Miss Bennett," Julian said loudly, his voice carrying over the music as he approached Claire, offering a theatrical bow. "I was told the brains behind the Whitmore estate's flawless operation was managing tonight’s auction. I must say, the reports didn't do you justice. You look absolutely magnificent."

Claire smiled politely, her professional mask firmly in place. "Thank you, Mr. Vance. We're very glad you could attend the charity auction tonight. The foundation appreciates your support."

"Oh, I'm not just here to support the charity," Julian said, stepping closer, his voice dropping into a suggestive purr that made Adrian’s blood boil. "I'm here to make an investment. Tell me, Claire... how much does Whitmore pay you to manage his miserable life? Because whatever it is, I'll triple it. Come work for me. Let me give you an office with a view of the park, and a life where you're treated like a partner, not a servant."

The surrounding guests gasped softly, the drama unfolding like a prime-time soap opera. Everyone looked toward Adrian, waiting for the titan to crush the challenger.

Adrian began to step forward, his eyes burning with a lethal fury, but before he could cross the floor, Claire handled it herself.

She took a half-step back, her expression cool, calm, and utterly devastating. "Mr. Vance," she said, her voice clear enough for everyone to hear. "Mr. Whitmore pays me for my skills, and in return, he receives my absolute professionalism. But what you're offering isn't a job—it’s an acquisition for your ego. And unfortunately for you, my loyalty isn't a commodity you can outbid. Excuse me."

She turned and walked gracefully away, leaving Julian Vance standing alone in the center of the ballroom, his smug smile completely shattered.
