Chapter 4 - The Sound of Broken Crystal

As Maya descended the stairs, the silence in the ballroom deepened until the crackle of the wood-burning fireplaces at the back of the room sounded like gunshots.

Every eye in the room followed her. Men forgot the conversations they were having; women stared at the construction of her gown with a mixture of professional awe and deep, instinctive envy. The black velvet didn't just fit her—it looked like it had been poured over her skin, emphasizing the royal curve of her spine and the flawless, glowing brown of her shoulders.

"Maya?" Preston’s voice was a choked whisper as she reached the bottom step. He stepped forward, his corporate composure completely shattered. "What... what are you wearing?"

Maya stopped three feet from him. Up close, the sheer density of the black diamonds on her corset was blinding. The raw stones had a jagged, industrial edge that contrasted beautifully with the soft luxury of the velvet.

"Hello, Preston," Maya said, her voice smooth, low, and carrying perfectly through the quiet circle that had formed around them. "Sloane was kind enough to invite me to a celebration of new beginnings. I thought it was only appropriate that I wore something new."

Sloane stepped into the space beside Preston, her fingers clawing at the silk of her own skirt as she tried to regain her footing. "Maya. How... unexpected. We didn't think you’d find the time to leave your little workshop in Brooklyn. And this dress... who designed it? Is it a vintage Dior? A custom Schiaparelli?"

Sloane asked the question with a sharp, desperate hope in her eyes. If Maya had bought the dress, it meant she had spent her entire settlement money on a single night of vanity—a sign of weakness.

Maya looked down at Sloane, her gaze cool and entirely untroubled. "I made it, Sloane."

A collective gasp went through the group of women standing nearby.

"You made this?" Julian Sterling, the chief creative officer of one of Manhattan’s oldest luxury conglomerates, pushed his way through the crowd. He was a man whose approval could launch a fashion house or destroy it with a single review. He stepped close to Maya, his eyes wide as he studied the intricate, flawless stitching of the obsidian beads. "This isn't just dressmaking, mademoiselle. This is structural art. The tension on this velvet... the distribution of the stones... it’s genius. Absolutely magnificent."

"Thank you, Mr. Sterling," Maya said, offering him a polite nod. "The stones are raw industrial black diamonds. A gift from a client who appreciates that some things are too strong to be polished down."

Preston felt a strange, hot pressure in his chest. He looked at Maya’s neck, his eyes landing on the platinum and emerald choker. He recognized it. It was the old, tarnished piece her mother had left her—a piece his own mother had once called "quaint" and suggested Maya hide in a drawer. Now, cleaned, restored, and paired with the midnight velvet, it looked like a piece from a royal treasury.

"Maya, let’s get a drink," Preston said suddenly, reaching out his hand toward her elbow, his old instinct of ownership taking over. "We have a lot to catch up on—"

Before his fingers could touch the velvet of her sleeve, a tall, imposing figure stepped into the light beside Maya.

It was Alistair Vance.

Alistair was the eldest son of the Vance tech empire, a thirty-five-year-old venture capitalist who rarely attended New York parties, preferring the quiet power of his private island in Maine. He was a man who didn't deal in millions; he dealt in percentages of global infrastructure. He wore a simple, unstructured black suit that made him look like a shadow, his dark eyes fixed entirely on Maya.

"I believe the lady is already with me, Hale," Alistair said, his voice a quiet, dangerous rumble that made Preston instantly drop his hand. Alistair looked down at Maya, his expression softening into something that looked dangerously like reverence. "The car is waiting by the terrace, Maya. Vivienne said she wants to show you the sketches for the autumn collection before the press gets hold of them."

Preston’s jaw tightened. "Vance? You... you know my ex-wife?"

May you like

Alistair turned his head, looking at Preston as if he were a low-level clerk who had spoken out of turn. "I know the founder of M. ELLIS COUTURE, Hale. And if I were you, I’d stop referring to her by what she used to be. Because by next season, the only thing people will remember about the Hale name is that you were foolish enough to let her go."

Alistair offered his arm to Maya. She placed her gloved hand against his sleeve, turned her back on the Hale family, and walked toward the grand terrace doors, leaving the prince of Wall Street standing in the middle of his own party, completely invisible.
