Chapter 8 - The Rebuilt Hearth

Six months after the Rose Main Reading Room show. May, 2026.
The morning sun poured through the high windows of Maya’s new penthouse apartment in Brooklyn Heights, overlooking the East River and the glittering skyline of lower Manhattan. The space was filled with the clean, bright scent of fresh eucalyptus, white lilies, and the rich aroma of espresso brewing in the kitchen.
Maya sat at the large marble island, a sketch pad open before her, her fingers tracing a new line for a spring collection. She wore a simple cream linen shirt and jeans, her curls loose, looking completely at peace.
Hale Capital was gone. The corporation had filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy three months prior, its remaining assets liquidated to pay the federal fines and the civil settlement Marcus Thorne had successfully extracted for Maya. Preston and his mother had retreated to a small, private property in upstate New York, completely removed from the Manhattan society circles they had once ruled with an iron fist.
But inside Maya’s world, the air was light.
A pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist from behind, a warm chin resting against her shoulder. Alistair Vance looked down at her sketch pad, his eyes bright with a quiet amusement.
"The line on that shoulder is too sharp, Maya," he murmured, his breath warm against her ear. "The fabric will bunch when she moves."
Maya laughed, leaning back against his chest, her fingers interlocking with his over her waist. "Alistair, you are a venture capitalist with a degree from MIT. Please do not tell a seamstress how to drape silk."
"I’m just protecting my investment," he said smoothly, turning her in his arms until she was looking up into his dark eyes. He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, heavy velvet box. He placed it on the marble island between them.
Maya’s breath caught. She looked at the box, then up at him. "Alistair... what is this?"
"Open it," he said softly.
She opened the box to reveal a ring that made her eyes water. It wasn't an oval-cut diamond designed to show off a price tag at a country club. It was a beautiful, unique ring made of solid platinum, set with a central, raw emerald-cut emerald, flanked by two uncut, jagged black diamonds—the exact same stones Vivienne had given her for the dress.
"I don't want to buy you a castle, Maya," Alistair said, his voice dropping into that quiet, sincere register that made her heart hammer against her ribs. "You already built your own kingdom on Madison Avenue. I just want to stand at the gates with you. Will you marry me?"
May you like
Maya looked at the ring, then up at the man who had stood beside her not as an owner or a judge, but as a partner who respected her fire.
"Yes," she whispered, tears finally spilling over her lashes as she threw her arms around his neck. "Yes, Alistair."
