Chapter 2: The Legal Viper

Chapter 2: The Legal Viper
By the next morning, the atmosphere in the hospital had shifted completely. The nurses who had previously bowed to Evan’s wealth were now treating me with a strange, quiet reverence. Two men in dark, tailored suits stood guard outside my door. They didn't belong to the hospital security team; they were men sent by Simon.

At 11:45 AM, fifteen minutes before Simon's deadline, the door opened. It wasn't Evan or Douglas. It was a woman with sharp features, her silver hair pulled back into a flawless, tight bun. She carried a sleek leather briefcase.
"Serena Harlan?" she asked, her voice like cracking ice.
"Serena Vance," I corrected firmly. "The Harlan name is temporary."
The woman smiled faintly, a gesture of professional appreciation. "Excellent. I am Victoria Cross. Your grandfather retained my services early this morning. I believe your husband’s legal team attempted to file for an emergency custody order at dawn."
My heart squeezed with sudden panic. "Did they get it?"
"They tried," Victoria said, walking over to the overbed table and opening her briefcase with two sharp clicks. "Evan’s lawyers argued that you were mentally unstable due to postpartum depression. They brought forward a signed affidavit from a private doctor claiming you have a history of instability."

"That's a lie!" I snapped, my hand instinctively tightening around Owen, who was nursing quietly.
"Of course it's a lie," Victoria replied smoothly, pulling out a stack of documents. "Which is why, at 8:00 AM, I presented the judge with the security footage from your hospital room's hallway, the medical report of the trauma to your trachea, and a comprehensive financial audit of the Harlan Corporation's offshore accounts."
She handed me a pen. "Your father-in-law is a very wealthy man, Serena. But wealth built on illegal arms trading and municipal bribery leaves a very clear paper trail if you know where to dig. Your Uncle Simon knew exactly where the shovels were buried."
"What happened to the custody order?" I asked, my breath catching in my throat.
"The judge dismissed their motion with prejudice," Victoria said, a triumphant gleam in her eyes. "Furthermore, the judge issued a temporary restraining order against both Evan and Douglas Harlan. They cannot come within five hundred yards of you or Owen. And here..." She tapped a thick document. "...is the voluntary transfer of all of Evan’s real estate holdings and his primary shares in the Harlan Law Firm to your name."
"He signed it?" I was stunned. Evan loved his money more than his life.
"His father made him sign it," Victoria explained. "Douglas knows that if those financial records reach the federal prosecutors, he will spend the rest of his life in a maximum-security prison. He sacrificed his son's pride to save his own skin. Sign here, here, and here."

I signed the papers, feeling a massive weight lifting off my chest with every stroke of the pen. For months, Evan had told me I was nothing without him. He had told me that if I ever left, he would use the law to strip me of my child and leave me penniless on the street. Now, with a few signatures, I owned the very roof over his head.
"Where is Evan now?" I asked.
"He's at his apartment, packing his things," Victoria said, closing her briefcase. "Or rather, he was packing. Your Uncle Simon personally supervised the eviction from the penthouse this morning. I believe Mr. Harlan is currently staying at a cheap motel near the highway. His credit cards have been frozen pending the finalization of the divorce."
As Victoria left, the room felt lighter. The silver "BEST DAD" balloon had deflated overnight, wrinkling until it looked like a discarded piece of trash. I looked out the window at the city skyline.

But I knew men like Evan didn't just accept defeat. He was a narcissist, raised by a criminal. When a narcissist loses their power, their pride, and their money all at once, they don't slink away into the shadows.
They explode.
