Chapter 4: The Fall of the House of Harlan

Chapter 4: The Fall of the House of Harlan
The counter-attack wasn't violent; it was surgical. Simon didn't just want Evan away from me; he wanted the entire Harlan legacy dismantled so thoroughly that they could never pose a threat to Owen’s future.

The next morning, Victoria Cross launched a barrage of legal indictments that shook the city's political foundations. The financial audits Simon had gathered over thirty years of quiet observation were delivered directly to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Internal Revenue Service.
By noon, news vans were parked outside the Harlan Corporation headquarters.
BREAKING NEWS: Douglas Harlan, prominent real estate developer, arrested on federal charges of racketeering, tax evasion, and historical ties to illegal arms smuggling. Sources state his son, Evan Harlan, is also being investigated for corporate fraud and witness intimidation.
I watched the broadcast from the safety of the estate, holding Owen in my arms. On the screen, Douglas Harlan was led out of his office building in handcuffs, his face covered by his jacket, looking broken and old. Behind him, Evan was dragged out by two federal agents. He was shouting at the cameras, his face twisted in ugly, impotent fury, pointing his casted arm at the reporters as if he could still threaten the world into submission.

They were denied bail due to being high-flight risks with offshore funds. The empire built on terror, intimidation, and the blood of innocent people had collapsed in less than twenty-four hours.
That evening, Simon came into the living room carrying a wooden box. He looked tired, but the ancient, heavy darkness that usually surrounded him seemed to have lifted. He sat down opposite me and opened the box. Inside was a collection of old medals, a few black-and-white photographs of men in uniform, and a heavy silver signet ring bearing the same dagger and broken crown design as his tattoo.
"Is it finally over, Uncle?" I asked softly.
Simon nodded, leaning back against the cushions. "It's over, Serena. The Harlan name is dead in this state. They will spend the next twenty years in a federal penitentiary. Their assets have been seized, except for the portions legally transferred to you before the indictment. You and Owen are safe. You are wealthy. You are free."
I looked at the old photographs in the box. "Who were they, Simon? The Vanguard?"

Simon looked at the photos with a melancholic smile. "We were a unit that did the jobs the government couldn't admit to. We hunted the monsters that hid behind money and politics. Douglas Harlan was a parasite that escaped us back then. I thought I had left that life behind when I took you in after your parents passed. I wanted to be just a grandfather, an old man who bakes muffins and forgets his hearing aids."
He looked up at me, his eyes shining with tears. "But when I saw those marks on your neck... I realized that a man can never truly retire from protecting his blood."

I reached over and took his hand, squeezing it tightly. "Thank you, Uncle. You didn't just save me. You saved Owen."
"No, Serena," Simon said gently. "You saved yourself the moment you chose to fight for his name. I just provided the shield."
