CHAPTER 1: THE THING MOVING UNDER HER SKIN

The first thing I noticed wasn't the swelling.

It was her eyes.

I've been an emergency room physician for twenty-two years.

Long enough to know that patients often reveal the truth before their mouths do.

And this woman was terrified.

Not anxious.

Not uncomfortable.

Terrified.

She sat upright on the examination bed, one hand resting protectively over her pregnant stomach.

Rainwater still dripped from her coat onto the floor.

Her chart identified her as:

EMMA LAWSON.

32 years old.

34 weeks pregnant.

Blood pressure: 128/82.

Heart rate: 104.

No significant medical history.

I pulled a stool closer.

“Emma, I'm Dr. Harrison.”

She smiled weakly.

“Hi.”

“When did the swelling begin?”

She looked down at her leg.

“About six hours ago.”

“Any pain?”

She nodded.

“It feels strange.”

“How strange?”

She hesitated.

Then she answered.

“It moves.”

I almost smiled.

People often describe nerve spasms that way.

Or severe muscle cramps.

“Moves how?”

She looked embarrassed.

“Like…”

She paused.

“…something crawling.”

I nodded professionally.

“Okay.”

I had heard similar descriptions hundreds of times before.

Nothing alarming yet.

I examined her leg.

The right calf was swollen.

Significantly larger than the left.

Warm.

Tight.

But oddly firm.

I began palpating the tissue.

First pass.

Nothing unusual.

Second pass.

Still unusual, but explainable.

Then the third pass happened.

Something pushed back.

I immediately stopped.

My fingers remained frozen against her skin.

I had definitely felt it.

A rigid shape.

Segmented.

Long.

Almost like several connected pieces.

Then it shifted.

Underneath my hand.

Emma gasped.

“Oh God…”

My stomach instantly tightened.

She wasn't imagining this.

Something was there.

I stood up.

Walked quietly toward the door.

And locked it.

Emma immediately noticed.

“What are you doing?”

I smiled calmly.

“Nothing to worry about.”

But I was already worried.

Very worried.

I grabbed the ultrasound machine.

“Let's take a closer look.”

Emma nodded nervously.

The room suddenly felt colder.

I applied gel to her calf.

Then pressed the probe against the swollen area.

The image appeared.

Then my entire body went still.

I had never seen anything like it.

The object wasn't a blood clot.

It wasn't a tumor.

It wasn't fluid.

There were structures.

Repeating structures.

Joint-like segments.

Moving independently.

I zoomed in.

The shape reacted.

It recoiled from the ultrasound probe.

Emma immediately grabbed my arm.

“What is that?”

I didn't answer.

Because I didn't know.

Then suddenly…

Her fetal monitor beeped.

Fast.

Too fast.

I looked at the screen.

The baby's heart rate was accelerating.

Emma winced.

“Oh…”

She grabbed her stomach.

“What?”

She looked terrified.

“The baby…”

I turned toward her.

“What about the baby?”

She whispered.

“He's doing it again.”

My pulse quickened.

“What is he doing?”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“He keeps kicking toward my leg.”

Silence.

Then she gasped.

“Right now.”

The fetal monitor spiked again.

I stared at her swollen calf.

Then…

Something inside it moved violently.

Not randomly.

Purposefully.

As if responding.

I immediately pressed the emergency call button.

Nurse Allison rushed inside.

“Doctor?”

“Call radiology.”

“Now.”

“Also page maternal-fetal medicine.”

She looked confused.

“What are we dealing with?”

I stared at the monitor.

Then answered honestly.

“I don't know.”

Ten minutes later, Dr. Rebecca Sloan arrived.

Head of maternal-fetal medicine.

Twenty-eight years of experience.

One of the smartest physicians in the state.

She reviewed the ultrasound.

Then frowned.

Then reviewed it again.

Her face slowly changed.

“What…”

She whispered.

She leaned closer.

“That's impossible.”

Emma immediately sat upright.

“What is it?”

Rebecca remained silent.

Then she said something that made the room colder.

“Have you traveled internationally recently?”

Emma blinked.

“No.”

“Any unusual foods?”

“No.”

“Any insect bites?”

“No.”

Rebecca looked concerned.

“Any experimental treatments?”

Emma froze.

Everyone noticed.

Rebecca spoke softly.

“Emma?”

She looked away.

Silence.

Then tears slowly formed in her eyes.

“Yes.”

The room immediately changed.

I pulled up a chair.

“What kind of treatment?”

Emma inhaled shakily.

“Three years ago…”

She looked ashamed.

“…I couldn't get pregnant.”

Rebecca nodded gently.

“Okay.”

“I joined a fertility study.”

I frowned.

“Which one?”

Emma answered.

“Genesis Reproductive Sciences.”

Rebecca's face instantly lost color.

I looked at her.

“You know it?”

She nodded slowly.

“Very well.”

Emma looked confused.

“What's wrong?”

Rebecca didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she pulled out her phone.

Opened a database.

Typed rapidly.

Then turned the screen around.

My blood instantly ran cold.

Genesis Reproductive Sciences had been shut down eighteen months earlier.

Federal investigation.

Unethical experiments.

Human trials.

Multiple missing participants.

Emma stared at the screen.

“Oh my God.”

Then her entire body suddenly jerked.

She screamed.

The ultrasound monitor flashed.

The segmented structure moved faster than before.

Then something horrifying happened.

It wasn't alone.

Another shape appeared.

Then another.

Three separate structures.

All moving.

All hidden beneath the tissue.

Emma burst into tears.

“Please…”

She cried.

“Please tell me what's inside me.”

Before anyone could answer…

The hospital lights flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then every computer screen in the room suddenly turned black.

A message appeared.

STOP THE EXAMINATION.

YOU ARE ENDANGERING TWO LIVES.

Everyone froze.

Then a second message appeared.

May you like

WE ARE ALREADY INSIDE THE HOSPITAL.

END OF CHAPTER 1.
