CHAPTER 2: THE SECRET EXPERIMENT BENEATH Her Skin

The room froze.
Every computer monitor glowed with the same message.
STOP THE EXAMINATION.
YOU ARE ENDANGERING TWO LIVES.
WE ARE ALREADY INSIDE THE HOSPITAL.
Nurse Allison instinctively stepped backward.
“What the hell is this?”
Dr. Rebecca Sloan grabbed the keyboard.
Nothing responded.
The system had been overridden.
Every monitor.
Every patient screen.
Every station.
Emma sat on the examination bed, one hand gripping her swollen calf and the other protecting her pregnant stomach.
She was shaking.
“Please…”
Her voice cracked.
“Tell me what's happening.”
I looked at her.
For twenty-two years, I had learned one rule above all others.
Patients deserve honesty.
Even when the truth is frightening.
But the truth was…
I still didn't understand what we were seeing.
Then Dr. Rebecca spoke.
“We're dealing with Genesis.”
I turned toward her.
“You're sure?”
She nodded.
Her face had become pale.
“Eighteen months ago, the federal investigation shut down the public side of the company.”
She inhaled slowly.
“But many of us suspected their research never actually ended.”
Emma stared at her.
“What research?”
Rebecca sat beside her.
“Their official mission was helping infertile couples.”
Emma nodded.
“Yes.”
“But privately…”
Rebecca hesitated.
“…they were trying to create adaptive biological implants.”
The room went silent.
Emma blinked.
“What does that mean?”
Rebecca answered carefully.
“Imagine tiny medical devices designed to live inside the body.”
“Devices that could repair damaged blood vessels.”
“Deliver medications.”
“Prevent pregnancy complications.”
Emma looked confused.
“That sounds good.”
Rebecca nodded.
“On paper, yes.”
Then her expression darkened.
“But they moved too fast.”
“They stopped testing in laboratories.”
“They started testing in people.”
Emma immediately burst into tears.
“No…”
Rebecca grabbed her hand.
“We don't know exactly what happened to you yet.”
Suddenly…
The fetal monitor spiked again.
The baby's heartbeat accelerated.
Emma gasped.
“Oh…”
Then her calf moved.
Everyone saw it.
The skin itself shifted.
Three separate ridges slowly traveled beneath the surface.
Allison whispered.
“Oh my God.”
Then something even stranger happened.
The movement stopped.
At exactly the same moment…
Emma's baby kicked.
Strong.
Powerful.
The segmented shapes immediately retreated.
Everyone stared.
Rebecca looked stunned.
“No way.”
I looked at her.
“What?”
She leaned closer to the ultrasound.
Then she whispered.
“They're responding.”
“To what?”
She pointed at Emma's abdomen.
“The baby.”
The room became silent.
Emma stared at us.
“What does that mean?”
Before anyone could answer…
The lights flickered again.
Then every monitor changed.
A new message appeared.
DO NOT REMOVE THEM.
THEY ARE PROTECTING HER.
Everyone froze.
My pulse accelerated.
Someone wasn't just inside our system.
Someone was watching us live.
Rebecca immediately unplugged one computer.
The message remained.
Another monitor.
Same thing.
Then a third.
Still there.
The entire room went cold.
Then a new voice echoed from the speakers.
“Dr. Harrison.”
Everyone jumped.
The intercom had activated itself.
“Do not panic.”
The voice was male.
Calm.
Older.
“Emma Lawson is not in danger.”
Emma grabbed my arm.
“Who is that?”
Nobody knew.
The voice continued.
“If you attempt invasive removal procedures, both patients could suffer catastrophic complications.”
I stepped toward the speaker.
“Who are you?”
Silence.
Then…
“My name is Dr. Elias Voss.”
Rebecca's eyes widened instantly.
“Oh my God.”
I looked at her.
“You know him?”
She nodded.
“He founded Genesis.”
The voice continued.
“Thirty years ago, my wife died from a pregnancy complication that modern medicine failed to prevent.”
The room listened.
“I dedicated my life to changing that.”
Emma whispered.
“What did you put inside me?”
Silence.
Then the answer came.
“Guardians.”
Everyone froze.
The word sounded absurd.
Impossible.
Then Dr. Voss explained.
“They are adaptive medical devices.”
“Artificial structures built to detect changes in blood flow.”
“To prevent clots.”
“To stabilize circulation.”
“To protect mothers during dangerous pregnancies.”
Emma shook her head.
“No.”
“No one told me.”
His voice softened.
“You were never supposed to receive them.”
Everyone stared.
“What?”
Rebecca leaned toward the speaker.
“What do you mean?”
Silence.
Then he answered.
“You weren't the original candidate.”
The room froze.
Emma's face drained of color.
“What?”
Dr. Voss continued.
“A clerical error occurred years ago.”
“The wrong patient entered the study.”
Emma immediately burst into tears.
“You experimented on me?”
“No.”
His voice cracked for the first time.
“You volunteered for fertility treatment.”
“Your records were accidentally merged with another participant.”
“By the time we discovered the mistake…”
He paused.
“…the devices had already integrated.”
Emma cried harder.
“How could you let that happen?”
Nobody answered.
Then suddenly…
BEEP.
BEEP.
BEEP.
A new alarm sounded.
I looked at Emma's vitals.
Blood pressure dropping.
The baby's heart rate fluctuating.
Emma winced.
“Something's wrong.”
The ultrasound screen lit up again.
Everyone gathered around.
Then we saw it.
The three segmented structures were no longer moving randomly.
They were surrounding a dark shape.
I zoomed in.
My heart skipped.
It was a clot.
A large one.
Deep inside a compressed vein.
The structures weren't attacking her.
They were containing it.
Rebecca stared in disbelief.
“Oh my God.”
Emma looked terrified.
“What?”
Rebecca smiled through tears.
“They're stopping it from reaching your lungs.”
Silence.
Emma stared at her.
“What?”
I nodded.
“If that clot had broken free…”
I swallowed hard.
“…it could have been fatal.”
Emma began crying.
Not from fear.
From relief.
Then suddenly another monitor lit up.
This time it displayed hospital security footage.
Everyone froze.
Three people wearing dark suits were entering the maternity ward.
Allison whispered.
“Who are they?”
The answer appeared on the screen.
FEDERAL TASK FORCE.
AUTHORIZED ENTRY.
Then another message appeared beneath it.
THEY ARE HERE TO SHUT DOWN GENESIS FOREVER.
Emma inhaled shakily.
“Then this is over?”
Dr. Voss spoke one final time.
“No.”
Everyone looked at the speaker.
He sounded emotional now.
“I've spent twenty years running from my mistakes.”
“Tonight…”
He paused.
“…I want to save one life correctly.”
Then a final file downloaded onto our computer.
PROJECT GUARDIAN.
Emma Lawson.
Original research logs.
Safety protocols.
Emergency reversal methods.
And one final note.
For Emma's child.
If you are reading this…
You unknowingly became proof that medicine can protect life without controlling it.
Please do better than we did.
The room fell silent.
Emma gently touched her stomach.
Then smiled for the first time all night.
At that exact moment…
Her baby kicked again.
Strong.
Healthy.
Then the three segmented structures beneath her skin suddenly became still.
Completely still.
May you like
As if their job was finally done.
