Chapter 1: The Cold Front on I-25

Chapter 1: The Cold Front on I-25

The hum of the tires against the asphalt of Interstate 25 was the only sound inside my car, but the silence felt incredibly loud. Outside, the Colorado sun was setting, casting long, sharp shadows across the gridlocked traffic. I stared at the text message glowing on my dashboard screen.

“I'm not coming. Dad just wants the family.”

The words didn't make sense at first. I was the one who had spent hours on the phone with the cruise line. I was the one who had carefully tracked down the Royal Sky Penthouse—a multi-level suite with a private wrap-around balcony, a 24-hour dedicated butler, and exclusive access to the ship’s VIP lounges. I had paid for all of it. Every single cent of the deposit, the port fees, the excursions, and the premium beverage packages had been charged to my corporate card the morning my annual bonus cleared.

And now, according to my mother, I wasn’t "family."

I pulled my car onto the shoulder of the highway, my hands trembling slightly against the steering wheel. I picked up my phone and dialed her number. It rang three times before she picked up, her voice sounding rushed and hushed, as if she were hiding.

"Aria, honey, I hope you aren't mad," she began, not even giving me a chance to speak. "Your father just felt that with everything that’s been happening with your brother's business and your sister’s recent divorce, we really needed some quality bonding time. Just the core family. You understand, right? You're always so busy with your corporate job anyway."

"Mom," I said, my voice dangerously calm. "I planned this trip. I paid for this trip. The reservation is under my name."

"Well, yes, and we are so incredibly grateful for your generosity, sweetie," she said, her tone shifting into that superficial, placating warmth she used whenever she wanted something from me. "Your father said it’s the best gift you’ve ever given us. We’re already at the port hotel in Miami. Your brother Julian brought his new girlfriend, and your sister Chloe brought the kids. It’s a full house! Dad thought it would be awkward if you were there too, since you don't really fit into the dynamic right now."

Since you don't really fit into the dynamic right now.

The phrase cut through me, clearing away the lingering fog of childhood desperation that had kept me trying to buy their love for the last ten years. I looked down at the passenger seat, where the small gift bag containing the silver shell earrings sat. I had bought them because she loved the ocean. I had bought them to see her smile.

"So, Dad wants a family-only cruise," I murmured.

"Exactly! I knew you'd understand. You’ve always been the independent one, Aria. We’ll take tons of pictures for you, I promise! Oh, your father is calling me from the lobby. I have to go. Thanks again for the penthouse, honey! You're a lifesaver."

The line went dead.

I sat in the quiet cabin of my car for exactly one minute. The hurt was there, deep and familiar, but beneath it, a new feeling was beginning to take root. It was cold, sharp, and entirely uncompromising. They wanted to use my success to fund their luxury, while simultaneously locking me out of the room. They wanted the billionaire lifestyle without having to look at the daughter who provided it.

I placed my phone in the cup holder, merged back into the traffic, and took the very next exit toward my office downtown. If my father wanted to see what happens when the person who sponsored everything finally lets them use the reservation, I was more than happy to show him.

By the time I sat down at my desk, it was 6:30 p.m. I opened my laptop and logged directly into the premium tier portal of the cruise line's corporate network. Because I held an Elite Diamond status from years of corporate travel coordination, the system unlocked instantly, displaying the master manifest for the Star of the seas cruise departing from Miami in less than thirty-six hours.

There it was. Reservation Reference: #STG-99421. The Royal Sky Penthouse. Total cost: $48,500. Passenger list: Richard Vance, Eleanor Vance, Julian Vance, Chloe Vance, and three additional guests.

I called the dedicated VIP concierge line. A representative picked up on the second ring.

"Welcome back, Ms. Vance. How can the Diamond Registry assist you this evening?"

"I need to make a radical modification to my reservation for this Saturday's departure," I said, my voice steady and professional. "I am removing myself from the passenger manifest."

"Oh, I am so sorry to hear that, ma'am. Please note that since we are within the 48-hour departure window, the penthouse suite is entirely non-refundable."

"I don't want a refund," I replied, a small, cold smile touching my lips. "I want to downgrade the reservation. I want to release the Royal Sky Penthouse back into the inventory for immediate public sale."

There was a brief pause on the line, followed by the rapid clicking of a keyboard. "Ma'am? You wish to voluntarily forfeit the penthouse? May I ask where you would like to reassign the remaining party members?"

"What are the absolute cheapest, lowest-tier cabins still available on the ship?" I asked.

"Let me check... we have a few interior crew-adjacent cabins on Deck 2, right above the engine room. They are Category Z interior staterooms. No windows, twin bunk beds, shared structural plumbing lines. But Ms. Vance, your current party consists of seven adults and two children. Those cabins are exceptionally small—less than 120 square feet each."

"Perfect," I said. "Move them. Put Richard and Eleanor in Cabin 204. Put Julian, his girlfriend, Chloe, and the kids into Cabins 206 and 208. Split them up however you need to, but make sure they are all on Deck 2."

"And the remaining balance from the penthouse, ma'am? It cannot be refunded to your card due to the late window."

"Apply the remaining balance as a non-refundable onboard credit," I commanded. "But restrict the credit entirely to my individual loyalty profile. Lock it down with a secure PIN. My family members are not to have access to a single dollar of that credit for room service, specialty dining, drinks, or shore excursions. Their SeaPass cards should be linked strictly to their own personal bank accounts for any incidentals."

"Understood, Ms. Vance. I am processing the cabin reassignments now. The penthouse is back on the market, and the new boarding passes for Deck 2 have been digitally issued to the email on file."

"Thank you," I said. "And please, do not send an automated notification text to the party. Let them enjoy their evening at the port hotel."

I closed my laptop, leaned back in my leather chair, and looked out at the city skyline. They wanted a family vacation without me. Now, they were going to get exactly what they asked for: a vacation shaped entirely by their own value, without a single cent of my protection to shield them from the reality of their choices.
