Chapter 2: The Reality of Deck 2

Chapter 2: The Reality of Deck 2

The Port of Miami was a chaotic sea of white cruise ships, roaring luggage carts, and thousands of excited travelers under the blazing Florida sun. Richard Vance stood near the VIP terminal entrance, his expensive linen shirt slightly damp from the humidity, his arms crossed over his chest with an expression of supreme entitlement.

Behind him, Eleanor was busy adjusting her designer sunglasses, while Julian and his new girlfriend, Vanessa, argued over who was supposed to carry the luxury leather garment bags. Chloe was completely overwhelmed, her two young children screaming as they ran around the heavy security stanchions.

"Richard, where is the VIP escort?" Eleanor complained, fanning herself with a boarding brochure. "Aria said the penthouse comes with a private concierge who meets us right at the curb. We’ve been standing here for fifteen minutes in the heat."

"Relax, Eleanor, I'm sure they're just running late," Richard snapped, though his own patience was wearing thin. He walked up to the priority check-in desk, where a pristine blue carpet led to a smiling agent. "Name is Vance. We have the Royal Sky Penthouse. We'd like our gold-tier key cards immediately so we can bypass this crowd."

The agent scanned Richard’s passport, her fingers flying over the keyboard. Her smile faltered slightly as the screen refreshed. She looked up, her expression shifting from hospitality to professional confusion.

"Mr. Vance, I see your reservation here," she said, her voice careful. "But there appears to be a modification made to your account last night. You are not listed in the Royal Sky Penthouse."

"What? That’s impossible," Julian shouted, leaning over the counter. "My sister paid for it months ago. It’s a fifty-thousand-dollar suite. Check again, lady."

"Sir, the penthouse was released back into the inventory and was purchased this morning by an international corporate group," the agent explained, showing him the screen. "Your party has been reassigned. You are currently booked in three interior staterooms on Deck 2. Cabins 204, 206, and 208."

Richard’s face turned an ugly, deep shade of crimson. "Deck 2? That’s the bottom of the ship! There must be a mistake. Call your manager right now! Do you know who I am?"

"I know exactly who you are, sir, but the booking sponsor, Aria Vance, authorized these changes personally," the agent replied, her tone hardening as she noticed the long line forming behind them. "Your SeaPass cards have been issued according to her exact structural directives. If you wish to board the vessel, you will need to proceed to the standard boarding lanes on the lower level."

The journey down to Deck 2 was a brutal descent into reality for the Vance family.

As they stepped out of the glass guest elevators and walked down the increasingly narrow, dimly lit corridors of the ship’s lowest passenger deck, the smell of fresh sea air vanished, replaced by the faint, metallic scent of industrial paint and heavy marine fuel. The walls here weren't covered in beautiful artwork; they were bare steel panels, vibrating rhythmically with the deep, low thrum of the massive diesel engines located directly beneath their feet.

Richard stopped in front of Cabin 204. He pressed his plastic card against the lock. The door clicked open with a heavy, unyielding sound.

Eleanor stepped inside and immediately let out a sharp, horrified gasp.

The room was nothing more than a concrete-walled box. There was no window, no ocean view, and no spacious seating area. Two narrow twin bunk beds were bolted to the wall, covered in thin, standard-issue white sheets. A single, tiny metal wardrobe stood in the corner, barely wide enough to hold two jackets, let alone Eleanor's three large suitcases. The bathroom was so small that the toilet and the shower were practically integrated into the same fiberglass stall.

"Richard... what is this?" Eleanor whispered, her voice trembling as she looked at the exposed pipes running across the ceiling. "Where is the balcony? Where is our butler?"

"It’s Aria," Julian spat, slamming his own luggage down in the doorway of Cabin 206 next door. "That ungrateful little bitch changed the rooms because we told her she couldn't come. She’s trying to punish us!"

"How dare she!" Chloe cried, trying to squeeze her two children into Cabin 208, which was identical to the others. "The kids can't sleep in bunk beds like this! It’s dangerous! And there’s no bathtub! How am I supposed to wash them?"

Richard’s phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, his fingers hitting the screen so hard he nearly cracked the glass. He called Aria.

It went straight to voicemail.

"You've reached Aria Vance," my recorded voice said, cool and professional. "I am currently unavailable, enjoying some well-deserved personal time. If this is regarding the cruise, please contact the main guest services desk on Deck 4. Have a wonderful voyage."

"Aria!" Richard roared into the phone before realizing it was a recording. He disconnected the call, his breathing heavy as the structural vibration of the ship's engine intensified, signaling that the vessel was finally pulling away from the Miami pier.

"Don't worry," Richard said, trying to regain his composure as he looked at his terrified, furious family. "We don't need her penthouse. I'll just go up to the guest services desk and upgrade us back to the VIP tier using my own credit card. I am not spending seven days living like a crew member."

He turned and marched back toward the elevators, leaving Eleanor sitting on the lower bunk bed of Cabin 204, her head in her hands as the first deep, deafening rumble of the ship's foghorn shook the entire room.
