Chapter 2 - Waking to Shadows

The faint, rhythmic pulse of a heart monitor was the first sound that anchored Lily to the world of the living.
When she slowly opened her eyes, white light washed over her vision, blurring into soft shapes. The sharp, bitter scent of disinfectant filled her nose. Pain—a dull, throbbing ache radiating from her lower body—reminded her that she was still anchored in her physical form.
Instantly, her hand twitched, instinctively moving toward her stomach.
"Easy, my love. Easy. I'm right here."
A warm, gentle hand enclosed hers. Lily turned her head slowly, her neck feeling heavy and stiff. Ethan was sitting on a chair pressed tight against her hospital bed. His eyes were red-rimmed and bloodshot, dark circles carved deep under his eyes, his dark hair messy and unstyled. He looked like a man who had walked through hell and barely survived.
"Ethan..." Lily’s voice was barely a scratchy whisper. Her throat felt like sandpaper.
Ethan immediately reached for a plastic cup with a straw, gently bringing it to her lips. Lily took a tiny sip of water, the cool liquid soothing her dry throat.
"My... baby..." Lily choked out, her eyes wide with terror as memory came rushing back—the roaring engine, the blinding headlights, the crushing impact.
"Our baby is okay, Lily," Ethan said softly, his voice thick with emotion as he lifted her pale hand to his lips, kissing her knuckles repeatedly. "I promise you. The doctors checked. The heartbeat is strong. You both made it."
Tears trickled down Lily's cheeks, washing away the lingering horror of that fateful morning. She let out a long, shuddering breath, squeezing Ethan’s hand with what little strength she possessed.
"Your mother..." Lily whispered, the memory of Eleanor’s icy words at the estate flashing through her mind. "She told me you didn't want this... she said I was trapped..."
"Listen to me, Lily, and listen carefully," Ethan said, looking directly into her eyes with an intensity that burned away all doubt. "My mother lied to you. She lured you there under false pretenses. I never changed my mind. I was waiting for you at the courthouse with our marriage license in my pocket until the hospital called me."
He pulled a small velvet box from his coat pocket, opening it to reveal a delicate platinum band set with a brilliant round diamond.
"I was going to give you this today," Ethan said gently. "And nothing has changed. My mother’s reign over my life ended the second she put you in danger."
Before Lily could answer, the door to the private room clicked open. Julian Vance, Ethan's trusted attorney and personal friend, stepped inside carrying a thick leather briefcase.
"Ethan," Julian said quietly, nodding respectfully toward Lily. "Miss Carter, I’m glad to see you awake. I apologize for intruding, but we have an urgent situation."
Ethan carefully tucked the blanket around Lily's shoulders before turning to Julian. "What is it?"
"Eleanor posted bail an hour ago," Julian revealed, his tone grim. "Her high-powered legal team managed to downplay her involvement in Arthur’s actions, claiming it was a tragic misunderstanding and an overzealous employee acting without explicit orders. She’s back at the estate."
Lily stiffened under the covers, a wave of fear washing over her. "She’s free?"
"For now," Julian admitted. "But that's not all. Her lawyers just served notice. Eleanor is applying for emergency guardianship over Ethan's trust accounts and filing an injunction to bar you, Lily, from accessing any Whitmore-affiliated medical care or facilities, claiming you are an 'unstable influence' attempting to extort the family."
Ethan’s jaw clenched so hard a muscle twitched in his cheek. "She really thinks she still controls this chessboard."
"She has money, influence, and half the judges in Boston on her payroll," Julian warned. "If we stay on the defensive, she will spin this narrative through the media until Lily looks like a gold-digger who threw herself in front of a car for a settlement."
Lily looked at Ethan, her voice trembling but steadying as she looked at her husband-to-be. "I don't care about her money, Ethan. I never did. I just want us to be safe."
Ethan stood up, leaning over Lily to kiss her forehead gently. Then he turned to Julian, his posture transforming into that of a man ready for war.
"Call a press conference outside the hospital at noon," Ethan ordered coldly. "If my mother wants a public fight, I will give her one. I am resigning from my position as Chief Architect at Whitmore Global Development, and I am cutting all financial ties with the family trust."

Julian raised an eyebrow. "Ethan, that's ninety percent of your net worth."
"My worth isn't in a bank account my mother controls," Ethan declared, looking back at Lily with absolute devotion. "My family is right here. And it's time the world knows exactly who Eleanor Whitmore really is."
