Chapter 6 - The Unraveling

When Ethan returned home an hour later, he found the cottage dark, save for the single lamp burning in the kitchen. Lily was sitting at the table, staring silently at the papers spread before her.
"Lily?" Ethan called out, dropping his jacket and rushing to her side when he saw her pale, distant expression. "What happened? Are you in pain?"
Without speaking, Lily pointed to the handwritten note from Eleanor.
Ethan read the words quickly, his face darkening with a rage so visceral his knuckles turned white as he gripped the edge of the counter.
"She will never stop," Lily whispered, her eyes brimming with tears of exhaustion. "Ethan, as long as I am part of your life, she will dig up every mistake, every rumor, every piece of trash she can find to hurt us. What if she convinces people I’m unsafe? What if she tries to take our baby?"
Ethan dropped to his knees in front of her, taking both of her cold hands in his and holding them firmly against his chest.
"Look at me, Lily," Ethan demanded gently but firmly. "Read my eyes. She has no power over us anymore. She is throwing stones from inside a cage because she knows she has lost."
"But the press—"
"The press knows the truth," Ethan interrupted. "And tomorrow, we are going to make sure the entire world knows the full extent of her madness."
The following morning, Ethan, Lily, and Julian Vance met with District Attorney Karen Alvarez in a private conference room at the Boston Superior Courthouse.
When DA Alvarez saw the blackmail package delivered to Lily, her eyes narrowed with fierce professional outrage.
"This is felony witness intimidation and obstruction of justice," Alvarez stated, slamming the file shut. "Eleanor Whitmore just signed her own conviction. We are moving up the trial date to next Monday, and I am adding three new federal counts to her indictment."
"Can we ensure Miss Carter won't have to endure a circus in the courtroom?" Julian asked protective.
"Miss Carter will only need to testify once," Alvarez promised, looking at Lily with deep respect. "And with the physical evidence, the cloud recording, and now this desperate attempt at blackmail, Eleanor's defense team won't stand a chance."
The day of the trial arrived with an oppressive gray sky hanging over the city. The courtroom was packed to maximum capacity with journalists, high-society figures, and curious onlookers.
When Eleanor Whitmore was led into the courtroom in handcuffs, wearing a simple prison jumpsuit without her signature jewels or styled hair, a collective gasp ran through the gallery. The grand matriarch of Boston high society looked diminished, her eyes sunken, though her jaw remained set in stubborn defiance.
Lily sat beside Ethan in the front row, holding his hand tightly. When called to the stand, Lily walked up with a quiet, dignified grace that commanded immediate respect.
For two hours, Lily answered questions clearly and truthfully, detailing Eleanor’s threats, the bribe offer, the terror of being chased by the sedan, and the agony of waking up in the hospital fearing for her unborn child.
When Eleanor’s attorney attempted to bring up the old school fire records, DA Alvarez immediately objected, presenting the official police clearance documents that proved the allegations were completely fabricated. The judge sustained the objection sternly, reprimanding the defense counsel for attempting to introduce discredited slander.

As Lily stepped down from the stand, she passed Eleanor’s defense table. For a brief second, their eyes met.
In Eleanor’s eyes, Lily saw no remorse, only the bitter, decaying ember of defeated pride. But in her own heart, Lily felt no hatred—only a profound, liberating pity.
