Chapter 3 - The Price of Trust

The kitchen felt smaller than it ever had before. The cheerful yellow curtains I had picked out last spring now looked like a mockery of the horror unfolding beneath them. Ethan took a slow, deliberate step forward, his wet boots leaving dark, muddy prints on the clean floor.

"You always were too smart for your own good, Mia," he said, his voice dropping into that chilling, flat register. "If you had just stayed on the floor, you would have passed away peacefully in your sleep. It would have been a tragic accident. A faulty stove, a carbon monoxide leak... I had three different narratives prepared. But you had to fight."

"Why, Ethan?" I screamed, backing up against the pantry shelves, holding the amber vial against my chest like a shield. "Ryan is your son! He looks just like you! How could you feed him that?"

"My son?" Ethan let out a harsh, humorless laugh that sent shivers down my spine. "He’s a financial anchor, Mia. Do you have any idea how much it costs to raise a child with his medical history? The asthma treatments, the private schooling... Olivia and I are restructuring the entire logistics firm. We’re expanding into the European market. I can't have a messy divorce tying up forty percent of my liquid capital in child support and alimony for the next fifteen years."

The cold, calculated corporate logic behind the attempted murder of my child made me want to vomit. He didn't hate us; he simply viewed us as bad investments that needed to be liquidated.

"The police are outside, Ethan," I said, my voice shaking but firm. "They know. I called them."

"They're trying to get past my truck at the main gate," Ethan said, giving a dismissive wave with the tire iron. "By the time they walk up the hill in this downpour, I’ll have found you and Ryan, staged a forced entry from a phantom intruder, and played the grieving husband who arrived too late to save his family. The narrative still works, Mia. It just requires a bit more physical labor."

He lunged forward, swinging the heavy metal bar directly at my head.

I dove to the left, crashing into the kitchen island. A row of ceramic spice jars shattered on the floor, showering us in red pepper and cinnamon. Ethan recovered quickly, turning to strike again, but before he could, the heavy glass window above the sink shattered inward.

A massive brick wrapped in a black cloth crashed onto the counter, scattering shards of glass across the room.

Ethan jumped back, startled by the sudden intrusion. Through the broken window, a figure in a yellow rain poncho tossed a small smoke canister onto the floor. White, acrid smoke billowed out instantly, filling the kitchen and blinding us both.

"Get out, Mia! Run!" a voice shouted through the broken glass. It was a man's voice, raspy and urgent.

I didn't waste a second. I scrambled under the cover of the smoke, crawling back toward the pantry and hauling myself up the wooden shelving into the ceiling crawlspace. My lungs burned from the smoke, but the fear for Ryan pushed me forward.

When I reached the ventilation shaft where I had left him, my heart stopped.

The grate was kicked wide open.

And Ryan was gone.
