Chapter 7 - The Paper Trail

The recovery inside the intensive care unit at the city hospital was a slow, sterile process. For three days, the doctors kept both me and Ryan on continuous intravenous fluids, flushing the remnants of the hemlock extract from our organs. Because we had caught it early, and because Marcus had identified the exact strain of the toxin, the permanent damage was averted.

On the fourth morning, an investigator from the federal prosecutor's office named Agent Davis sat beside my bed. He had a thick leather briefcase filled with documents that had been recovered from Ethan’s personal safe and Olivia’s corporate office.

"Mrs. Vance—or rather, Ms. Miller, since the marriage was technically fraudulent from its inception," Agent Davis began, adjusting his glasses. "We have spent the last seventy-two hours unravelling the financial network behind your husband's logistics firm. It goes much deeper than a simple corporate expansion."

"What do you mean?" I asked, my voice still raspy from the strangulation.

"Ethan and Olivia Vance weren't just business partners," Davis explained, sliding a series of financial statements across my overbed table. "They were operating a major pharmaceutical smuggling ring through the firm's European transport lines. Your mother’s estate—the land your grandfather left you in the valley—sits directly on the route they needed to construct their secondary distribution warehouse. You refused to sell that land last year."

The memory came back to me. A year ago, Ethan had begged me to sign over the deed to my family's historic farm, claiming we could flip it for a massive profit. I had told him no; it was the only piece of my childhood I had left.

"When you refused to sign, they realized that under the current state laws, the only way Ethan could claim sole ownership of the property was through your death, with your son's share falling to him as the surviving legal guardian," Davis said, his face grim. "If Ryan survived, the property would have been tied up in a state-managed trust until he turned eighteen. That's why the boy had to go too."

I closed my eyes, a single cold tear slipping down my cheek. The entire marriage, the beautiful dinners, the beautiful napkins... it had all been a long-term corporate acquisition strategy.

"What about Julian Vance?" I asked, remembering the voice on the phone.

"Julian was arrested at the international terminal in Atlanta last night," Davis said with a small, satisfied smile. "He had two suitcases filled with bearer bonds and a flight plan for a non-extradition country. Olivia turned state's evidence within two hours of her arrest. She gave us the encryption keys to their server in exchange for a removal of the death penalty from her charges. She’s going to spend the rest of her life in a federal penitentiary."

"And Ethan?"

"He died on the way to the hospital, Ms. Miller. The medical examiner confirmed he took two rounds to the chest during the firefight. His estate has been frozen by the asset forfeiture unit, but because the firm was built using your initial inheritance money, our legal team is working to restore every single dollar back to you and Ryan."

I looked out the window of the hospital room. The rain had finally stopped, and a pale, clean spring sun was beginning to break through the clouds, warming the brick walls of the courtyard below.

"I don't want the firm, Agent Davis," I said softly. "Sell it. Dissolve it. Use the money to build something that doesn't smell like him."
